Last year I bought the SLR Magic 2X 50 and as a vintage lens collector I was pretty disappointed with the images. It was really bad with a sort of grain to it. I think it has to be cheap glass quality. So recently I bought a KOWA Vidoscope Super-16mm 2x Anamorphic and that hit the spot. There is no grainy poor quality to this lens. I am using it as an adapter and I still need to work out some clamp details, but I am really impressed with the image quality.
Well, this is great video, and yes, it is correct. But I found diopters can create additional artefacts. This may be wanted or not wanted, but does have an impact on the Image. I have a 27min video in the FB Blazar Remus group, showing and explaining this. Therefore, always check carefully that you have not introduced a flare/artefact you do not desire. Thanks for the video and explanation ❤
i just bought the 50mm and 85mm and i think they are both underrated and overlooked ... while some other cheaper options have either no character or boring, ugly or even no flares and strange bokeh, the vazen deliver in all circumstances, many say they would wnat a wider one so i guess if you are into amber flares the atlas mercury are a great alternative now ... still i think these lenses are amazing and i hope i can completethe set one day.
Really informative video - thank you. One question I have would be about if you were designing a developing shot on set - say a gimbal, steadicam or dolly shot that started wide (say 5-10 metres from the subject), then travelled into a tight close up on a face (say 30 cm) - but was within the lens' minimum focus distance. Is there a way to do that with close-up lenses?
Would love to see links of 'affordable' 0.33 or 0.5 diopters. Most of the cheap ones are +1 or more and not really useful for filming people / faces etc!
Nice explanation of the diopters. I bought a set a bit over a year ago when I really wanted to shoot macro stuff with anamorphic lenses. It has been more like trial and error, but got nice results with +1 and +2 diopters. With cheap +4 and +10 diopters you get a lot of chromatic aberration, but interesting look non the less. I didn't know about the more expensive achromatic diopters before this video - thanks! :D Your tips have been super valuable when diving into the anamorphic world - great content, keep it up! :)
Funny enough I believe a future lens will use A.I. focusing just like they have, now, for glasses. Essentially the "glass" will self adjust for focusing! 😮😊👍
Yep. Life is a gamble. I used to buy vacuum tubes from Moscow. I bought about 2000 actually. Putin started clamping down on PayPal transactions so we went to cash friends and family. However, it was all fine. I was buying 100 per box or shipment. These were NOS mil spec tubes. Then the seller decided to leave Russia as it was not safe anymore.
i’m 70 years old. I have been shooting my own stills and video for my farm and ranch sales company for 20 years. I am retiring now, and wanted to try some anamorphic video. I bought the Surui 35mm 1.33. I use final cut pro X and this video, along with your calculator, kept me from throwing this new lens in the “maybe I’ll get to that later” box. Now I’m going to learn how to use it. You are like having a son who knows all about this and can explain it to his much older dad. Thank you so much, Tito. You know your subject matter and can explain a new trick to an old dog. Jim in Oregon
Hi Tito, can i ask what do you set your project settings to on timeline and export for this lens, i used davinci and cant get the numbers around my head if you could let me know what you used for this video as i assume it was shot on the anamorphic adapter, thanks :)
Makes me wonder if StudioBinder does any research at all, or they just Google this stuff and report the first things they see. If they can't even distinguish flare and bokeh, there's just no credibility left.
Have you looked into the Blazar Remus set? That's the one that has my eye at the moment. Personally, I don't like the character of any of these lenses, save the Atlas. Love Atlas, but given the price, it's unachievable for most. The Remus lenses seem to have a look closer to Atlas, but at the price of the other, more affordable lenses.
brother trying to contact you! on anamorphic aspect ratio and desqueeze, how do you manage with different cameras? I shoot komodo & FX3 both with blazar remus in 2:4:1. Looking to get proper overall perfect desqueeze using both cameras on same project timeline!
One thing I’ve wondered about projector lenses is that if the projector max focus distance is 500ft can you really tell the difference with your eyes the difference between being focused at 500 ft. And infinite? (Or even 250 ft vs. infinite)
Hi Tito….I am SO glad I found your channel. I am 70 years old and have been shooting my own video and stills as a farm and ranch broker for 20 years now. As I begin retirement I just want to have some fun with my equipment. I currently shoot video on a GH5 and G9II. I have a couple of Surui cinema lenses and want to try an anamorphic lens. I would love the Vazen, but more than I want to spend. The Surui is very affordable, but will I be satisfied with the 1.33X? Thank you so much for any help you can provide to an old dog looking for a new trick. Jim
great video man, I stumbled on to this video because I recently purchased a PL to MFT Metabones converter along with a few NISI Athena Primes. The rear flange of the NISI Lenses hits the back of the adapter which stops it from focusing to infinity. Is there any way to fix this issue?
Hi. When you say "become a member" do you simply mean subscribe to your channel? I am already subscribed. I don't see any other way to become a member. Is there a link somewhere for a paid membership?
since you are covering the good old topics of your channel again (haha) here is a suggestion for another review. The Aivascope 1.5x Adapter is maybe the best anamorphic adapter imho. I would love a comparison video based on your knowledge in the space. greetings
Very Interesting. Does this mean that the Kowa Vidoscope Super-16mm 2x Anamorphic is also the same glass as the ones you are talking about here? It looks like the whole lenses, less the rear threads, are just the Kowa form with different names on them. This reminds me of how TOMIOKA made lenses for a lot of camera producers.
It would be fantastic to see a video on the various KOWA lenses and their purposes and histories. I just bought one, but haven't a clue to where it stands in the history of KOWA lenses. Thanks.
