21:37 I found a hut-like house with a base connected between two small mountains in a world when I was a kid, I also remember joining a few players worlds on my PS3 as a kid, despite not being on the internet I remember crystal clear of playing with other players and not remembering how I even joined their worlds in the first place.
I have a theory about Old Minecraft pumpkins, sure the pumpkin model as a Unlit-Jack-o-Lantern was updated in future updates, but.. who carved out all of the pumpkins in the world? INCLUDING grown pumpkins, or were they naturally growing like that and were they a sub-species of the original pumpkin?
i gotta admit that new mc aint that good like in the new version they didnt change anything on the graphic engine wich basicly means for example the leaves look like a scrub daddy bc anti aliasing doesnt work that well in modern mc but when i go back to an older version it looks smooth it might just be bc its dull now and bc there more detail so i always gotta wait for optifine to drop so i can use their internal shader bc im triggered of bad graphics easily and the bloat in updates is crazy i just compared minecraft 1.20.4 and 1.20.6 (current version at the time) and in 1.20.4 i got an average of 200 fps optifine off and on i got an avrg of 300-400 but as soon as i move into a different chunk the game becomes unstable and in 1.20.6 i get 50 fps less when chunk generation on every setting maxed out on both this just shows how poor Microsoft treats Minecraft but its not all of their fault Notch also made some reasonable lines of code that were unecessary and are now burried in the dephts of folders and files bloating minecraft forever 💀 so its crazy that a game got such a glow down in over 10 years and my problem is not the variety of blocks its just the ammusement of the game it became too hard now i spawn in right in the middle of a lush cave that brings me to an ancient city on my first cave trip like this is rediculous and its not rare either i swear on my life that i just spawned right next to an ancient city 3 times in the span of 3 weeks and guess what, i played 3 times in survival mode in 3 weeks so i basicly got online trying to have fun and insta dealing with a warden bc my first cave is connected to the ancient city structure and i insta rage quit cuz i accidently make a sound bc im not prepared cuz in the next second i find myself surrounded by the city thats why i officially quit minecraft (when playing alone id still play with my friend cuz thats the only fun thing to do ) maybe creative too bc i like building
I’ve played Minecraft since early Alpha. I feel like the reason that survival probably felt more intense for people back before the adventure update was the lack of stackable food, less food variety, and lack of experience for killing monsters. Back then you only received the items monsters would drop and some monsters , like the Zombie didn’t drop anything. So back then you had to be very selective of what you would bring to go spelunking and monsters were both difficult and very rewarding for engaging.
Old Minecraft the devs really took their time updating the game. Every new addition didn’t always have multi purpose functions but they did fit right in with everything else. You could feel the small improvements like sneak or weather effects, while not breaking the cohesion of everything else in the game. The game nowadays has less of a unified aesthetic and pace in favor of more and more complexity. I don’t t think that’s a bad thing cause a lot of modern players do like the fast pace of it all, but it does feel harder to slow it down if you want to. Achievements are in your face constantly and the recipe guide is fine, especially for beginners, but it does break the immersion a lot. Old Minecraft it was very easy to melt into the experience and find yourself immersed, where Modern Minecraft , players use short cuts to quicken up the game play in order to experience as much as possible in each session. Before, the phases of play felt more ambiguous, where Modern Minecraft has distinct progression and goals that all require a lot of complicated methods to achieve.
Beta 1.7.3 - that's the version I've been starting with in 2011. Today, I'd at least miss: hoppers, comparators, fence gates (I like redstone machines). And, on the design side: stone bricks are nice, they are missing in beta 1.7.3
the great elements Notch cooked is the way the color blends like color grading, texture, system, gameplay, graphics, and many aspects such as those that will make you felt good. It all comes hand to hand with the emotion it express to people
I remember being so absolutely hyped about the adventure update, talking about it and looking at screenshots of it every day with my friend. I'm pretty sure an early version of the update leaked onto the internet prior to its intended release, and that was probably the most exciting day of my Minecraft career. I certainly wasn't disappointed back then! Now, though, I realize that the 1.8 update made the game worse in a lot of ways and is probably the least fun version you can play, without the interesting world generation and simplicity of Beta and without all the new features that would be added in the coming years that'd make modern minecraft more fun.
Its definitely not nostalgia cause my first minecraft was 1.8, then i tried newer versions up till the most recent one (1.20.?), ive never played beta before and im absolutely in love with it rn
while i disagree with your view on the availability of more blocks (i like how much detail you can put into builds), i do agree that it is harder to make more cohesive builds in servers and the variation in saturation/vibrancy of blocks makes different styled builds stick out. the progression has also made people in servers stick around less, I'm usually just a builder in our servers, only getting gear to make building easier, and its typical for some people to rush cracked enchanted diamond gear to netherite -> build efficient farm -> burn out and not play anymore.
Ive just stated playing 1.7.3 beta and dam it feels like the good old days except for ive never played beta before, my first minecraft was after the adventure update, so what i wanted to say is i cant help but compare beta to the modern minecraft cause the latter feels so boring and kinda pointless. Beta being so simple actually makes it way more intereating in challenging, now in new minecraft you come corss bunch of villages shortly after starting your game and you already have a year's worth supply of food and even armor, oh and you just steal villagers bed so you dont have to make one yourself, and after that i just lose my interest in the game, but when playing beta i get so excited to stumble on a sheep cause i can finally make my own bed xd the mining, the farming all of it is exciting in beta because the resources are not handed to you an a silver platter
there really isn’t anything bad about old minecraft really, it gives off a unique vibe new minecraft just doesn’t and is way more simpler. the real problem i have with it is that after awhile it just gets boring. Sure that sort of applies to present minecraft but theres a LOT more to do in those newer versions. ppl will always be like “its superior cuz theres no hunger bars or theres no mobs” and yeah you can have that opinion but then wheres the challenge? what do you do after?
The creepy moments i've had in my beta gameplay: 1. same tunnels you showed 2. A zombie in the mountain cave stopped and looked at me, but I was way too far to be noticed, literally on top of a different mountain (mb i was just too paranoid)
New minecraft feels really boring, played it a little bit and I stumbled upon THREE villages within some 20 min of playing😭 i think this sense of being alone in the vast world is what really makes minecraft so special, beautiful and unsettling at the same time and beta is perfect example of it, just to think of the amount of times I felt paranoid and had to turn around during the daytime to see if there's something behind me... New minecraft just feels too safe and too easy, I've never felt anxious playing it :/

You pinpointed exactly why i slowly grew out of playing Minecraft, and only now do I realize how much I miss it. I adore how much you love it's simple and rough design, and I must agree; it IS quite charming! I find myself enamored seeing that someone still find so much value in an old thing, not just despite, but thanks to it's flaws and roughness. It reads as a love letter to old Minecraft, and I would listen to you reading a thousand more...
minecraft has given me more numerous and deeper, existential, pants-shitting scares than any other game in my entire life. i love it so much. i'll never stop coming back to it.
I feel like old Minecrafts less variety of blocks really pushes creativity, and builds look a lot more how do I put it, organic? But at the same time I love having more block variety in the new versions and it lets me make really amazing looking builds.
the worst part about the new blocks that were added is that as i've gone back to the game, those new blocks don't do anything, if they're supposed to be for decoration they're not good looking either or I struggle to even find a reason to keep them like you said.
5:12 this part resonates with me. I still play my Minecraft world from 2010, but in modern versions Minecraft. I don't keep returning to the world because I beat the ender dragon that one time or because I have lots of end game equipment. I keep playing it because I want to re-visit all the cool stuff I made and add new stuff, which I know I'll continue to enjoy years in the future. I do sometimes struggle a bit to build in newer Minecraft. I'm placed in this already beautiful world, with a million blocks to use and I don't know what to build. I find I rely a lot more on searching Google for inspiration or examples.

For me, the new textures don't feel unique. They just have this generic-pixel-art-indie artstyle, which a lot of other games use - it's not that distinct from Stardew Valley, Terraria and everything else, as opposed to the old textures.
