PATCHING THE ROOF AND PITCHING THE HAY IS NOT MY IDEA OF A PERFECT DAY WHEN YOU'RE EXTRAORDINARY YOU GOTTA DO EXTRAORDINARY THINGS I'M NOT THE TYPE WHO LOSES SLEEP OVER THE SIZE OF THE COMPOST HEAP WHEN YOU'RE EXTRAORDINARY YOU THINK ABOUT EXTRAORDINARY THINGS OH, I ONCE KNEW A MAN LIVED EACH DAY THE SAME SAFE AND SANE AND SWELL AND ON THE DAY HE DIED I COULDN'T CRY ALL I COULD SAY WAS: "HOW COULD THEY TELL?" OH, LOOKING AT LIFE FROM DEEP IN A RUT MAY GIVE YOU A VIEW OF THE SUNSHINE, BUT IT'S UNNECESSARY FOR SOMEONE WHO IS VERY EXTRAORDINARY LIKE ME … IF THE FLOORBOARDS ARE SQUEAKING AND THE DOORBOARDS ARE LEAKING AND THE CHIMNEY'S IN NEED OF REPAIR IF THE GARDEN HAS BRAMBLES AND THE YARD IS A SHAMBLES WELL, I'M TERRIBLY SORRY, BUT I DON'T CARE! I'VE GOT TO BE SOMEONE WHO LIVES ALL OF HIS LIFE IN SUPERLATIVES I'M EXTRAORDINARY I GOTTA DO EXTRAORDINARY THINGS THE FACT THAT I'M SPECIAL IS EASY TO SEE SO WHY DOESN'T ANYBODY SEE IT BUT ME? I'M EXTRAORDINARY I NEED TO DO EXTRAORDINARY THINGS EV'RY SO OFTEN A MAN HAS A DAY HE TRULY CAN CALL HIS WELL, HERE I AM TO SEIZE MY DAY IF SOMEONE WOULD JUST TELL ME WHEN THE HELL IT IS OH, GIVE ME MY CHANCE AND GIVE ME MY WINGS AND DON'T MAKE ME THINK ABOUT EV'RYDAY THINGS THEY'RE SO SECONDARY TO SOMEONE WHO IS VERY EXTRAORDINARY LIKE ME!
Patching the roof and pitching the hay Is not my idea of a perfect day When you're extraordinary You gotta do extraordinary things I'm not the type who loses sleep Over the size of the compost heap When you're extraordinary You think about extraordinary things Oh I once knew a man He lived each day the same Safe and sane and swell When they told me he died I didn't cry All I could say was How could they tell? Oh, lookin' at life From deep in a rut May give you a view of the sunshine, but It's unnecessary To someone who is very Extraordinary like me If the floorboards are squeaking And the doorboards are leaking And the chimney's in need of repair If the garden has brambles And the yard is in shambles Well I'm terribly sorry But I don't care I've got to be someone who lives All of his life in superlatives I'm extraordinary I gotta do extraordinary things The fact that I'm special is easy to see So why doesn't anybody see it but me? I'm extraordinary I need to do extraordinary things *instrumental break* Oh ----- give me my chance and give me my wings And don't make me think about everyday things They're so secondary To someone who is very Extraordinary Like me
I used to sing this song to audition for all of my school musicals because I loved it so much. I didn’t know until way later that it was kind of an orgy scene. Imagine being 17 and hearing your Director tell your whole class that it was a scene about sex pretty much. Oh well. I always made it into the musical though!
I think what I find most interesting about Pippin is the way in which so many people insist that there is only one correct way to perform or interpret the show, it’s metaphors and nuances etc. This argument is ironic, because it contradicts one of the major themes of the show: the idea that “our lives are leading us down one specific path to one perfect purpose” is actually a lie, and the imperfect choices and variables are what make life worth living. To insist that there is only one perfect way to perform or interpret this show is to echo the players.
My best friend loves this song and used to send it to me even though I don't know a damn thing about theater, because we believed we were destined for more. In recent months, I started to fall in love her, but she's with another man. So I had to say goodbye for now to refocus and I just keep holding onto this song. Kind of fitting she gave it to me as I am going on my way. I just hope she knows I'll always love her and that we'll be friends one day.

They stopped the most beautiful song in the score to accommodate a few unnecessary lines… Pippin isn’t usually performed with an intermission, and they added one here. They didn’t have to announce it…they could’ve just drawn the curtain so people would know it’s intermission. And they give the final line of the act to the leading player. This is Pippins song… don’t take it away from him.. they made this beautiful song complicated, and choppy. @@alexis8455
My high school is doing Pippin this year! I’m a Freshman so I most likely won’t get that big of a part… I’m still auditioning for Fastrada though! I’m really exited! Not sure how we’re going to pull it off though! We have a really strict budget 😭
That was awful. Relativism rules in Schwartz's Pippin, of course, so on that level possibly only mediocre. But anywhere else within memory, just--awful. This was possibly Stephen Schwartz's one coherent work, but this proves how fallible it is.
i saw this on broadway, i wept through this entire song. it touched my heart and stroke the deep ties and love i share with my grandmother. im very fortunate sitting here at almost 40 and still have her to touch, but alzheimers has taken her mind and next week she will be moving to a nursing home and the only constant home ive known, where my biggest problems have been solved begins to fade. and im just absolutely heart broken. i miss my grandmothers mind, i miss my friend, my most important and greatest confidant.
This is absolutely phenomenal Ciaras vocals are just amazing and the only reason I prefer Ben's leading player is the dancing in this scene with him is so amazing
