Billy is absolutely incredible in this role...I was blown away by how much I love the show. Oddly enough, Billy as Lola reminded me so much physically of Whitney Houston...incredible show.
i saw it tonight, Alan mingo Jr. as Lola, the first thing that came to mind with this performance is WHITNEY. from the moment the silhouette came into view, the whole performance just screamed WHITNEY
I was lucky enough to see Billy Porter do the role three times, but none was so special as his farewell performance on Friday night. The atmosphere in the theatre was electric, and he stopped the show with this song. The ovation was so long (I'm guessing at least 4 - 5 minutes) and heartfelt that he started crying and that caused the audience to go even crazier. One of the best nights I've ever had at a show.
I saw kinky boots a few weeks ago with billy porter and tears were brought to my eyes after he performed this song. There was a two minute long applause after it as well and a standing ovation. Such a beautiful number
In the shows libretto, this song literally says "Whitney Power Ballad" for the feel description, and the piano part is almost identical to I Have Nothing. #WhitneyLolaRealness
+Blunix - you are soooo right. I've now seen 2 other actors play the part on the tour. And while they were both very good in their own right; there is NOTHING like the original. I've seen him sing it even better than he did in this video!! His God-given talents are truly phenomenal.
This number speaks to me in many ways. Not taking anything away from Billy's performance of this song because it's stellar, but I had the chance to see the touring cast this weekend and seeing this number performed was just amazing. The setting, rawness and simplicity alongside the lights and orchestra gave me chills! I hope to see Billy when he comes back to broadway.... He's amazing!!!
Ok. My obsession continues (just saw my 30th show on Friday). Since my last post, I was blessed to see Billy perform in Pittsburgh with the KB tour in August. All I can say is.....what you have seen on Broadway is NOTHING compared to what he gave his hometown folks. Can you imagine this song 1000 times better?? He got a thunderous 5 MINUTE applause!!!! It was simply incredible. He was "turnt" all the way up. :-)
I'm so happy I get to see his final show! This song is so powerful and Billy does an incredible job! I know with this song, there won't be a dry eye in the house that night.
It's reminiscent of Whitney as she is the most lip synced artist ever though it has to be said Billy Porter has some chops pulling this off live what a voice 👄 xKx 👄
I just saw the show last night (Billy's understudy Timothy Ware performed as Lola/Simon) and I was seriously crying during this song! It was so beautifully written but even more beautifully sung. Timothy's voice was beautiful; angelic.
I was lucky enough to see this in the front row a few weeks ago & I think I still have goosebumps. One of the best performances I've ever seen. Just amazing.
Thank you Brooke for posting this. It's my favorite song and my favorite part of the show. Having been blessed enough see Billy's performance 14 times (so far), I'm in awe every time. His concert at Lincoln Center last week was phenomenal too! I've had the pleasure of meeting him several times, and he is very sweet and down-to-earth. All of his success is well deserved. Love ya, Billy!
