What’s up Calvin! Yeah I’m pretty sure I grew up with you all way back in the day haha. Great to hear from you and had no clue you were into fishing. I got in the game late. I’ll try to post some more videos as soon as I find some down time! 🤘🏾💯🔥🙏🏽
Yes brother baitcaster’s drags has a potential to loosen after a good run from the fish, ask me and now you lol. So I will usually check my drag every time after the fish runs. Most times lol… good job brother…
Yeah I had always heard about star drags getting bumped and it can either go bad …or really bad lol. Love and learn, fish made it home and we love to fish another day. After all… It’s about learning and having fun doing it. Appreciate the support! 🙏🏽🤘🏾💯🔥🎣
The choice is always go light and get bit or fish heavier gear and have better chances to land the fish. That was likely a 40 pound setup to get bit, and a fish well over 100 pounds. You have to get really lucky to get those big ones on the light stuff, once that fish got its head down it was over
Yeah I am learning more and more the tactics and how the methods play into the probability of landing fish. This guy def turned away and took off on us hahah!
lol, hey we all have our days I guess! Luckily it was a smaller grade and it was landed. I ended up with 4 this trip, too bad my go pro was dying haha. Live and learn! 🤘🏾🙏🏽🎣💯
That deckhand who gaffed your halibut made dumb rookie move. Never want to gaff a halibut that is on the borderline of being legal. if it was short then it would have died. Dont do that! Either lift them over or net them, then check the size, if its short you can release it so it can live to grow bigger.
Those are great points, definitely want to make sure we get them back safely if they’re too short. Thankfully this one was a keeper. This was my first ever halibut, and I don’t yet have the eye to tell if it’s short or not but as I develop I’ll make sure to bounce when appropriate. A sustainable approach is absolutes needed man. We have to do our best to be responsible fishermen across the board! Appreciate you sharing your thoughts brotha! 💯🙏🏽🤘🏾🔥🎣
I love the pursuit. Such a fishy boat. The deckhands and John or Gus all work so hard to put you on fish. Definitely my favorite boat to go out on. And when ryan is in the galley the food is fire.
Oh for sure, those guys were on it! It’s nice being on boats that are there to help guide you and teach you how to be better. Huge thanks to all the Pursuit crew. And yes, food was 🔥🔥🔥
For sure am hahah, I have no ego about it. I’m always able to learn something new when I get out on the water. Thanks for dropping a comment and appreciate the support! 🤘🏾💯🔥🙏🏽
Hahah, don’t let it scare you, this sort of experience teaches you how to fish smart and avoid mistakes in the future. I’ve done the majority of my learning on party boats and I still pick up a lot of lessons each time I go. Staying in front of your line at all times goes a long way on these sort of trips and helps avoid tangles + land more fish. Best of luck!
That boat is definitely full of people who don’t know how to fish on those party boats. People should be getting of that rail much faster for you. Also 30 lb test is pretty strong. Those tiny yellows pull hard haha. That cast you had to get bit was clutch good job getting it away from the boat.
The boat was definitely jam packed, makes me appreciate the lighter load trips for sure haha. Yellowtail are so fun to fight, but I think my drag was bumped down in the midst of the tangled rods and I was having to find my setting as I was fighting it. Always a tricky thing to do because you want to avoid over doing it and popping off. Man yeah honestly it took me some practice (at the park) to get comfortable casting… it’s paid off on full load trips like this. I feel comfortable and that extra 10-20 foot cast makes a world of difference doesn’t it! Thanks for dropping some love and for watching the video Eric. Very much appreciated!!🤘🏾🙏🏽🎣🔥😎
When you go out on a party boat you just have to expect a lot of inexperienced fishermen. That’s the name of the game my brother… and no one should get mad. It’s basically the training grounds for all new fishermen. When you get better, you’re going to probably progress into charter and then limited charter boats. I’ve been fishing on boats since the 1960’s, so that’ll tell you how long I’ve been around, lol! P.S. When I was a kid, we used to fish on the barges in Long Beach Harbor! Look that up!!!
@@danielsuzuki2678 yeah that’s my approach to fishing, roll with the punches and learn from the experiences. Ultimately I feel like I’m reaching a point where I’m comfortable and find a “pocket” on the boat and am able to cast and hook up. I need to work on the end game and how to capitalize, control the fish better. I never knock these trips, they’re absolutely the training grounds haha. I love being out there with experienced and beginner fishermen. I still have a long ways from being e pert so I just take it a trip at a time. I’ll have to check out the spot and I appreciate you leaving your thoughts and tips brotha! Tight lines! 🤘🏾💯🎣🔥
This is how you do it right on YT! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_P0ILfLdYdY.htmlsi=YXyoAZJJ7HhV_gI4 Don’t mess with the drag much. Set it to 1/3-1/4 of breaking strength of the line with a nice fighting bend in the rod. If u going to in a fight, wait until the fish stops running and bump slightly up or done. Keep hand off line when fighting fish.
Great pointers brotha! And yeah I’m slowly piecing together all of the knowledge. Setting the drag is always one of those mysterious things lol. In this case though, I think it was bumped in the process of the handing rods off and untwisting tangles. Lesson learned. Hand off the spool when hooked up is a habit I need to break for sure! Appreciate the advice! Tight lines sir! 🎣
@@FishingwithNesto hopefully mystery solved now. Get yourself a spring drag scale for what you need. Don’t get one too large, or maxed out but one in between the range. Also I marked my drag and handle with a Sharpie, I know where it’s at.
By no means, this is a perfect example of what NOT to do haha. I’m on the beginner side of fishing and always bring a learning attitude, despite any failures. I hope others can learn from my mistakes rather than their own. An unfortunate lesson but a lesson indeed! Thanks for tuning in! 🙏🏽💯🎣
It was a super informative seminar, and I feel that each person on the panel is a true expert in their “craft”. I try to acknowledge that this was a west coast / east coast split panel, and each side brings its unique perspective based on its respective fishery. They both presented some great insights and ultimately it’s up to us to try them and see which works best for us. Thanks for tuning in and watching!!!!! 🙏🏽🤘🏾💯🎣
Might as well have right, especially given how things were going I guess nothing else could have really hurt hahah. You always hold some hope though and it’s scary in the moment to decide on make or break decisions. Maybe next time I’ll apply what I learned here! Thanks Mark!
Not much you could have done. When you handed it back and the deck hand he tried to stop it the week link broke its the nature of the beast. It happens to everyone be glad it was not your $100, worth of line.
I did notice that actually, thumbing the reel to slow it down would most likely cause a connection to pop, but also burn the hell out of your thumb hahah. They were trying to put us on fish and I am grateful for that. Thanks for taking the time to comment Shane!
Seriously though!!! I mean im honestly grateful for the experience. I don’t believe that I SHOULD catch every single time I go… it’s awesome when I do lol… but you can also learn from mistakes and failures like this. Respect the Tuna!!! 🐟
Nothing you could have done with that mean fish. The clowns saying put the reel in sunset at the beginning of the fight are clueless. Fish would have popped instantly.
@@mzoerb12 it’s all positive vibes on my side, I’m learning and love being on the water. Yeah it was a tricky scenario and either way I think I may have been toast hahah. Appreciate ya dropping love on the video! 🙏🏽
Years ago that nearly happened to me but it was then when there were only single speed . I nearly saw backing on my reel luckily I was on a cruiser and chased back my line n caught my blue marlin still hanging on my wall today. Now it’s always great 2-3 speed reels with enough drag n line braid .
Oh yeah, I mean this let’s be honest, this was simply a fish that overpowered my skill and the gear that it was hooked on. Only another reason to study the game and respect the fish. Glad you gained lone in yours and have a memory of a lifetime!!! 🙏🏽🤘🏾💯🎣
What I find confusion is you mention how the Captain & crew already mentioned the School size caught previously, yet a deckhand decided to give you line that he already knew was under gunned?
There were a few 40-60lb fish that we saw eating top water. I think the crew was trying to set us up for a bite and success. Unfortunately the fish outgunned the gear
pool noodle. wrong equipment. angry 150 lb'r. should have asked for help sooner. you didn't even remotely do anything to slow him down. better luck next time.
Yeah there was only a point at the beginning of the fight where he blitz the boat and I aimed a bit of line. After that any effort was futile. Hopefully next time I have better luck. There were a few smaller grade in the mix that were feeding top water, and I think they were hoping to hook into a smaller one. Didn’t work out for us this trip, but that’s fishing haha. Thanks for commenting sir!
As far as the reel, yeah it was a Talica 12 and can’t recall what the rod was or the line rating. The tuna was already hooked by a deckhand and the crew let me fight the fish. You may be correct though.
@@anthonypeak2125no sir this was not my gear so I am not familiar with what exact line was on it. It was a fish that was hooked by a deckhand and the rod was as handed off to me. I had an opportunity and am grateful for it regardless, learned a lesson and looking forward to never repeating it hahah!
Hey what’s up brotha! It was awesome fishing with you as well. I’m still learning a ton so this was one of those learning trips no doubt. I may have some more clips that I’ll try to upload. I may have some of that giant you caught lol!! Nice work out there and thanks for the comment 🙏🏽🎣💪💯
The weakest link is designed to break but a light enough line to allow a fly lined bait to swim away from the boat. And a Big boat can’t move to catch up line for the angler so bigger line say closer to the drag setting would have helped. A jig stick with a bigger mono or Floro would get it done but it takes lots of energy. Cheers for fishing and hopefully next time it’s catching..
Great insight and yeah I agree. You walk a fine line between fishing too light and getting bit, or bumping up and having to work for a daytime bite! Maybe next time I’ll be luckier! Thanks for the comment!!!
Yeah I wish we could have had more drag to tighten. The deck hand did button it down but it was still not enough. Could have been the initial drag setting that caused us to max out!
😂😂😂 sort of felt that way but I was grateful to have had the opportunity and managed to learn a thing or two from the experience 💯🙏🏽🤘🏾I am piecing together the pieces to this puzzle 🎣
Yessir, it was goosed out on the fly line and clearly on a lighter set up. The rod and reel were the boats and it was handed off to me. I was lucky to have had the opportunity, but it was a tough situation! Fly lining with heavier set ups is a tricky technique indeed, but effective if you can manage to get bit!
Yeah at the very beginning the fish felt as if it was swimming towards the boat, and that’s about the only time I gained on it. Once it decided to turn and swim away there was no stopping it hahaha! Bigger gear and better drag setting would have helped!
That rod was not meant for a fish that big, it's got too much give. Reel was solid for the fish. Good luck on the next trip. I'm sure you will be rewarded next time out
Yes I agree, although it didn’t feel so much like the rod struggled as much as the reel did. My theory is that the reel could have handled the fish better but maybe it was set too light before the deckhand hooked the fish. Learning lesson in many ways! Thank you for commenting and sharing knowledge with me! 🙏🏽

@@FishingwithNesto You'll get the big one next time!!! I fish often out of 22nd street when I'm not in SD for the tuna. Hopefully I'll see you on the water. A sturdy rod helps alot in the fight to get that leverage on your side.
@@justinB89I’m always in it for the fun and the learning man. I’m blessed to be out there and know that these losses will make me better. Yeah I’ve been out of 22nd street as well. Maybe one day we’ll share the rail! Thanks for sharing some knowledge🙏🏽
I definitely would have put a little bit more drag on him for sure!! He was definitely taking line way to easy and by putting a little more drag on him might have worn him out faster to where you could have made up line before he started to take more line again!!!
Absolutely agree, I wish I had more drag to spare hahah. The reel was buttoned down, and also the drag setting was already set when the rod was handed to me. I do agree with you though I wish I would have been able to increase the drag and put some more heat on that fish. They were bigger grade BFT though, the gear in my opinion was greatly underrated unfortunately. Thanks for sharing some good advice!!!!
Awesome video man I went today and saw a guy with the same stand and the ball yall hang on the line I tried power bait night crawlers both together I have some 10lb test Carolina rig trying to go tomorrow in the AM any advice ? And also what’s that ball you guys hang man you guys got it down to catch them trout ! Lol
Hey Emmanuel, the ball is a bumble strike bobber, but you can use a regular bobber (red and white traditional one) the idea is that when a fish bumps your bait, it causes your bobber to bounce and alerts you of a coming bite. That’s why they are known as strike indicators. For YEARS, I just used a regular bobber with a hook clipped on to my line (barb-less). If you need more of a description of this let me know and I can expand. I would suggest stepping down your line if possible. A quick fix would be to make your leader a 4lb test leader… 2lb test if you feel comfortable fighting a lighter line and can set your drag properly so the fish does not break off on you. I would suggest mice tails, not because that’s my go to … but because that was working very well this past weekend. My go to is typically power bait on a Carolina rig (suggestion - use a smaller treble hook ) and before you cast make sure it floats. The floating past is a MUST!!!! These are little tips and tricks I learned over the years that have honestly changed my hook up and landing ratio. Hope this helps. Get out there and have fun, catch fish, and if you need any other pointers feel free to reach out. 🎣
@@emmanuelromo4869 because I was doing things on the fly, I simply hooked it on to my treble hook I was already using. But you may have success with a slender mosquito hook or a bait hook.
What’s up! Started out with powerboat and has slight success. At the time my neighbors were using night crawlers and mice tails with great bite/catch ratio. I switched to night crawlers but actually had less action… lastly I tried mice tails and it was a night and day difference. Just goes to show that you have to be willing to adjust your strategy when you are out on the water. Tight lines! 🤘🏾
It’s this one I believe. Game changer since I used to have one with no wheels or rod holders. Love it!!! - fishlabtackle.com/products/fishlab-small-roller-tackle-bag
