Personally I would have tried putting a heave bend in the rod, sometimes thats just enough extra drag to turn a fish.
@FishingwithNesto
@FishingwithNesto 4 месяца назад
Might as well have right, especially given how things were going I guess nothing else could have really hurt hahah. You always hold some hope though and it’s scary in the moment to decide on make or break decisions. Maybe next time I’ll apply what I learned here! Thanks Mark!

The choice is always go light and get bit or fish heavier gear and have better chances to land the fish. That was likely a 40 pound setup to get bit, and a fish well over 100 pounds. You have to get really lucky to get those big ones on the light stuff, once that fish got its head down it was over
@FishingwithNesto

Yeah I am learning more and more the tactics and how the methods play into the probability of landing fish. This guy def turned away and took off on us hahah!

Hey what’s up brotha! It was awesome fishing with you as well. I’m still learning a ton so this was one of those learning trips no doubt. I may have some more clips that I’ll try to upload. I may have some of that giant you caught lol!! Nice work out there and thanks for the comment 🙏🏽🎣💪💯

Years ago that nearly happened to me but it was then when there were only single speed . I nearly saw backing on my reel luckily I was on a cruiser and chased back my line n caught my blue marlin still hanging on my wall today. Now it’s always great 2-3 speed reels with enough drag n line braid .

Oh yeah, I mean this let’s be honest, this was simply a fish that overpowered my skill and the gear that it was hooked on. Only another reason to study the game and respect the fish. Glad you gained lone in yours and have a memory of a lifetime!!! 🙏🏽🤘🏾💯🎣

Not much you could have done. When you handed it back and the deck hand he tried to stop it the week link broke its the nature of the beast. It happens to everyone be glad it was not your $100, worth of line.

I did notice that actually, thumbing the reel to slow it down would most likely cause a connection to pop, but also burn the hell out of your thumb hahah. They were trying to put us on fish and I am grateful for that. Thanks for taking the time to comment Shane!

Better to lose a fish than to lose a fish and $50.00 of braided line
@FishingwithNesto
@FishingwithNesto 5 месяцев назад
True that haha. They did manage to get the line back so that was a plus. Fish popped off at the leader connection most likely.
@JS-sx3bl
@JS-sx3bl 5 месяцев назад
The weakest link is designed to break but a light enough line to allow a fly lined bait to swim away from the boat. And a Big boat can’t move to catch up line for the angler so bigger line say closer to the drag setting would have helped. A jig stick with a bigger mono or Floro would get it done but it takes lots of energy. Cheers for fishing and hopefully next time it’s catching..
@FishingwithNesto
@FishingwithNesto 5 месяцев назад
Great insight and yeah I agree. You walk a fine line between fishing too light and getting bit, or bumping up and having to work for a daytime bite! Maybe next time I’ll be luckier! Thanks for the comment!!!

What I find confusion is you mention how the Captain & crew already mentioned the School size caught previously, yet a deckhand decided to give you line that he already knew was under gunned?
@FishingwithNesto
@FishingwithNesto 5 месяцев назад
There were a few 40-60lb fish that we saw eating top water. I think the crew was trying to set us up for a bite and success. Unfortunately the fish outgunned the gear
@j.j.clingman4083

I definitely would have put a little bit more drag on him for sure!! He was definitely taking line way to easy and by putting a little more drag on him might have worn him out faster to where you could have made up line before he started to take more line again!!!
@FishingwithNesto
@FishingwithNesto 5 месяцев назад
Absolutely agree, I wish I had more drag to spare hahah. The reel was buttoned down, and also the drag setting was already set when the rod was handed to me. I do agree with you though I wish I would have been able to increase the drag and put some more heat on that fish. They were bigger grade BFT though, the gear in my opinion was greatly underrated unfortunately. Thanks for sharing some good advice!!!!

pool noodle. wrong equipment. angry 150 lb'r. should have asked for help sooner. you didn't even remotely do anything to slow him down. better luck next time.
@FishingwithNesto
@FishingwithNesto 5 месяцев назад
Yeah there was only a point at the beginning of the fight where he blitz the boat and I aimed a bit of line. After that any effort was futile. Hopefully next time I have better luck. There were a few smaller grade in the mix that were feeding top water, and I think they were hoping to hook into a smaller one. Didn’t work out for us this trip, but that’s fishing haha. Thanks for commenting sir!
@rc3443
@rc3443 5 месяцев назад
just tight the drag, at least you would have a chance to stop it
@FishingwithNesto
@FishingwithNesto 5 месяцев назад
Yeah I wish we could have had more drag to tighten. The deck hand did button it down but it was still not enough. Could have been the initial drag setting that caused us to max out!
@LettuceLand
@LettuceLand 5 месяцев назад
Bit on the flyline? If so not much you can do about that. You usually don't go over a 40lb setup for flyline
@FishingwithNesto
@FishingwithNesto 5 месяцев назад
Yessir, it was goosed out on the fly line and clearly on a lighter set up. The rod and reel were the boats and it was handed off to me. I was lucky to have had the opportunity, but it was a tough situation! Fly lining with heavier set ups is a tricky technique indeed, but effective if you can manage to get bit!

Nothing you could have done with that mean fish. The clowns saying put the reel in sunset at the beginning of the fight are clueless. Fish would have popped instantly.

So I'm guessing that was a Tac-12 sitting on a Terez Rod? With maybe 65 lbs of Spectra under 20-30 lbs top shot?
@FishingwithNesto
@FishingwithNesto 5 месяцев назад
As far as the reel, yeah it was a Talica 12 and can’t recall what the rod was or the line rating. The tuna was already hooked by a deckhand and the crew let me fight the fish. You may be correct though.

@@anthonypeak2125no sir this was not my gear so I am not familiar with what exact line was on it. It was a fish that was hooked by a deckhand and the rod was as handed off to me. Maybe more heat right off the bat. It looks like you were gaining in the beginning. It’s fishing you never know what the fish is going to do.
@FishingwithNesto
@FishingwithNesto 5 месяцев назад
Yeah at the very beginning the fish felt as if it was swimming towards the boat, and that’s about the only time I gained on it. Once it decided to turn and swim away there was no stopping it hahaha! Bigger gear and better drag setting would have helped!

That rod was not meant for a fish that big, it's got too much give. Reel was solid for the fish. Good luck on the next trip. I'm sure you will be rewarded next time out
@FishingwithNesto
@FishingwithNesto 5 месяцев назад
Yes I agree, although it didn’t feel so much like the rod struggled as much as the reel did. My theory is that the reel could have handled the fish better but maybe it was set too light before the deckhand hooked the fish. Learning lesson in many ways! @@FishingwithNesto You'll get the big one next time!!! I fish often out of 22nd street when I'm not in SD for the tuna. Hopefully I'll see you on the water. A sturdy rod helps alot in the fight to get that leverage on your side.
