The planes are staggered. Three up front, two middle, and three on the back row. The space between the planes is plenty to let the following row through. You have to place your plane in the right spot on your row though, and hold your lane during the take off roll. That way there are no plane INFRONT of other planes. Passing during the start is an integral part of the race.
You'll have to provide just a tiny bit more detail than that to have a guess. Don't know how one discretely exchanges email addresses here. Your plane came out of Oregon I believe. I was a day away from going to pick it up for a new owner to bring up to CYBW for modification. Unless of course there is a second one with that paint job.
What a nice bird Mark! owning a legend is on my bucket list. I do have to say I also like the ball cap, nice to see the "Alberta Air Force" getting around. Thanks for posting the video, and if you ever need a co pilot, I'd be happy to help out. Shane
Hi Shane. Glad you recognized the ball cap. It has gone missing since then. Will need to find another ball cap to wear for this week's test flights. Bright sun and that canopy means I need something.
Hello Mark ter Keurs, is it possible to contact you regarding this video (i.e. via email)? We would be interested to discuss a license to use this video if this is generally possible to discuss? :) Cheers, Felix
Empty roughly 2300 lbs, max gross 4000 lbs. You can have 2 x 250lbs pilots, 100 lbs of baggage and 120 gallons of fuel and be within range, or a 200 lbs pilot, 175 lbs passenger, 150 gallons of fuel, and no luggage. Price range depends on a huge variety of factors, from 200k for a basket case, to 700k for a premium one.
No, it is a really good travelling machine. 1000 nm legs are comfortable. And if you don't want to go too far, she is wonderfully light to the touch and a great dog fighter. You just have to have the right kind of friends.
While the canopy seal is not inflated, it is pretty easy to hear people talking or for them to hear you call clear. No fold up bikes, but his thing attracts enough attention to get a ride into town.
I know the designer adds some procedures to the instructions, but what's the flight characteristics and are there any things to watch our for (specific eccentricities)? also is there any specific training need that your insurance co required?
Insurance requirements depend on your experience, training, and profession, so that’s going to be different for everyone. As for the airplane: in pitch the plane is very light in force, pretty much neutrally stable, and the moment you think about applying finger tip force up or down she going there. In roll she is light and positive at low speeds getting progressively heavier as the speed goes up. The rudder is powerful and directional stability is positive. Rest your feet on the pedals and the plane goes like an arrow. Other than the minimum runway length of 4000 feet I don’t recall George mentioning anything. My test airport only had the 2000 foot runway available. It works just fine, but you can’t be 5 knots off on your approach speed. The far end of the runway will soon be the near end.
the guy with the red flag is just staring at the guy sitting dead on the runway. what the heck.... talk about incompetence and not being prepared to do your job (that lives depend on)
I met George in the early to mid 80's and flew in his red GP-4 out of Rio Linda Airport here in Sacramento. His daughter and my mother were friends and introduced me to him. What a genuinely wonderful fellow. I was a private pilot with about 100 hours at the time and this was the experience of a lifetime. Not sure if we spend more time inverted or up, but is was great fun.
It is actually 8 airplanes, three on the front row, two on the middle row, and three on the rear row. That has been the Formula 1 race start at Reno for many decades. The airplanes are staggered in their rows such that they fit between each other if they stay in their own lane.
Can pilots not see forward from their cockpits while on the ground? One would think the pilot should have been able to see the stopped aircraft, but these things have extremely low canopies for minimal drag which would make them difficult to see out of in the nose-up attitude on the ground.
Quill Maurer nah m8, most tail draggers with decent sized engine can’t see in front. And lots of bush planes without a overly long nose due to the high angle still can’t see in front. That’s why taildragger are required to taxi in S patterns. It has nothing to do with canopy being aerodynamically efficient. By your logic a war bird that commonly revive canopy modification should have less visibility to front (like p51 and seafury). Without changing the pilots seat position it doesn’t matter if the canopy is sleek or not it won’t effect the view.
The GP-4 has 43 hours on it. Recently it cruised at 16,000 feet, 17.2" MAP, 2500 RPM, 8.0 GPH, 197 KTAS. The Osprey has approximately 350 total time on it.
Flaggers are to blame for this incident there was clearly no red flag posted as mentioned in Thom's video. He could have been killed because of someones negligence.
NO RED FLAG. SHAME ON YOU RARA---AGAIN YOU HAVE FAILED THESE RACE PILOTS. At this point, there are so many flaws, concerns, and serious problems with your leadership that the races are now in jeopardy of being lost forever. PLEASE STEP DOWN AND GIVE THE FULL LEADERSHIP TO THE PILOTS SO THEY MAY FIND QUALIFIED PEOPLE TO RUN THE FULL SHOW. THIS IS NOT WORKING AND YOU ARE THE PROBLEMS RARA. GO AWAY NOW.
As a pilot, I find this kind of accident highly questionable. I listened to the comment of one safety official who was first to arrive at Tom's Hot Shot plane and he clearly said the red flag was up. But I have also viewed 4 different films with 4 different angles from close up to just off the runway with wide viewing ability, and I have never seen a red flag for this race thrown due to runway incursion. So is there someone that can send me PROOF that a red flag was thrown?
You seem to have missed the point. The red flags were in the ready position, Thom signaled a problem. The guy who was in the shot admitted they had seen his signal. At that point the red flag SHOULD have dropped to stop the rest of the start. That's why Thom asked about it. The official admitted they did not drop the red flag as they should have. This was the cause of the incident. The plane is actually named "Hot Stuff".
congratulations. how long did it take to build? I got my plans last April and am eager to begin building. butt am working out of town till the end of the year.
My friend Paul built the airplane over a span of 6 years. He did an absolutely gorgeous job. I have the privilege of flying it. The airplane flew beautifully from the very first flight. Where will you be building your's?
Knottygirl I just chatted with u between races on the game. I thought it was really cool too talk with a real racer. May u have many victoyrs and god speed. Dino "starscream" from reno game.
