Here I was all these years thinking the Train from 1964 had the best wreck scenes. Though the cars and tanks may be models, the engine is real. It was from the US, built by the army, specifically to replace damaged engines damaged during the war. They likely wrecked it because the Ohio based Lima company was sending larger, and faster engines that very year the film was released.
My dad worked at the ypg north of yuma from 1959 to 1978 he was a radar tracker, before the news my would call us "hey kids appolo flying over at 2:05 pm and others, agina ships to,we would set up are telescopes 155mm.and Rebbca we did land on the moon
Hey Brian, read the Title caption (Ignoring 2010, 2061 and 3001, sorry, ACC ! )! Your not alone in people not seeing that so I did another version. Here---ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YFupF6xv2Jk.html
Poor Frank got the raw deal as did the 3 hibernating astronauts. It the book version, HAL opened the doors and let all the air out of Discovery to kill them.
This redux is so lovely. I loved this movie as a child when I first saw it as a child on TV. Being from a family on both sides of STEM majors led me to become interested in Science Fiction.
I’ve always wanted to see this. Thank you. Big admirer of Bill’s work - I do the same sort of thing and he’s an inspiration. Would have loved to have met him.
Excellent videography, and capturing of the original movie's emotion, although I think ACC may have wanted to point out some of the basic physics mistakes made here and there... Poole was lost while they were still enroute to Jupiter, and while 2001 didn't cover the 'braking to orbit' stage of the flight (yes I know you said ignoring 2010 etc), Poole would have still had 'in transit' speed, and as such, from whatever ecliptic orbits he followed over that 203 year period, any time he was within proximity of Jupiter, or any of it's moons, he would have orders of magnitude in velocity. As such, his impact would have been meteoritic whereby a steep approach would have left a sizeable crater, while a shallow or glancing contact (somewhat as depicted), would have liberated a sizeable amount of material, as well as possibly his remains in a streaming cloud of ejecta. On a side note, the depiction of the dust cloud was completely wrong as it fell back to the surface to quickly and with obvious atmospheric drag. And speaking of Poole's remains, after 203 years, he would be a solid popsicle and would have shattered on impact. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed this, my only other disappointment being that in the last frames, I was expecting the monolith to fall over on him. (sorry).
Interesting observations, but you obviously missed the real point of this exercise, (or to be fair maybe they dont come across strongly for certain people), which was to emulate as much as possible the shooting and photographic effects style and the implied approach to mid 1960's physics of the movie, nothing else. You mentioned the dust cloud on impact, which was a real cloud of dust shot on Earth (I had no choice, and no CG) and slowed down, as was the dust effect in the Aries 1B and Moonbus lunar landings in the original movie. You missed the glove shot, with earth gravity on the falling dust (fullers earth) similar to the absence of 1/6th gravity effects on all the live action shots on the Moon also in the original movie. The space suit is pockmarked with micro-meter impacts which will have affected his trajectory somewhat and he is greeted by an extra-terrestrial device/intelligence, which appears to be bringing him back to life from a frozen lump, so I would assume it had the capabilities to control his landing velocity somewhat? Maybe? The monolith falling ontop of him is mentioned a lot , by some Wits 🤣, but Monty Python had done that years before, and I wanted to homage/refer to just 2001 ASO in this short. (sorry).
Thank You for putting together this reel celebrating the great work of the Lydecker Brothers. Really great work that elevated the RKO serials! For me their best work is 'Sink The Bismarck' which for me are the best model ship scenes ever put on film.
ES UNA PELÍCULA, CON TODOS LOS ERRORES DE APRECIACIÓN DE UN CINEASTA NEÓFITO EN LA CIENCIA COSMOLÓGICA. NADA MÁS. NO ES PALABRA DE UN SER OMNIPOTENTE QUE NI EXISTE...,..!! ESTAMOS TODAVÍA EN LA PREHISTORIA DEL CONOCIMIENTO. DE LA ESPECIE SIMIO HOMO,.
