Let's create some art together...painting, repousse, sculpture, pottery, journal binding, plus whatever else comes along. We'll also stray into camera related stuff now and again....and talk about tools, supplies, and equipment for all of it. You're invited!
I also choose the 24-200 over the 28-400, and so far I am happy. The 24-200 is of course a bit wider, and that is more important to me than an extra 200mm, particularly since in DX/cropped mode this lens will do 300mm. It's also lighter and a bit brighter at its long end. I sold my FX adopter required 28-300 F mount in favor of this Z mount. Each person has to evaluate their own uses, but for general photography the 24-200 is a better fit for me. This lens and my Z mount 35 S f/1.8 is pretty much all I would ever need for my new Niko Z6III.
@lawrose4 Thanks for the comment! Have continued to test this lens and expect to post a proper review soon. Your observation of 24-200 being a lighter/brighter lens is what I've also been finding so far-
I am surprised that you are getting rid of the LeoFoto LS-324C Tripod. I love mine even at 6'2". I too have the Manfrotto 500 Video Head. I am not happy with it. The reason I don't like my Manfrotto is there seems to be no counter balance resistance no matter what I do. I think I watched a video by Scott Keys or Hudson Henry and one of the mentioned that. I think it will be going into My TRADE pile. In fact I have a few other things I want to shed. I have two Kirk BL-Z7ii L- Brackets that I don't need any longer as I have switched over to the Z8. I also have a MoVo Gimbal Head that needs to go. Thanks for the video and giving inspiration to Declutter the camera room. Ron
@rdphoto2 My thinking is Manfrotto should take a closer look at their published weight rating for the 500 and decide if people are indeed being given the correct information concerning how much weight the head will counterbalance and hold still when tightened down. The 502 has worked VERY well for us. Not too pleased with the 500, but didn't want to sound too grouchy on-air about a brand I actually overall like quite a lot. Thanks for the comment!
The Cannon R1 body is over $4,000. Battery grip 1-$,00 2-over some $800 or the cooling fan version for video. Cannon CF Express card was around $900 but was discounted recently. Okay for working Pros but us retired folks "no Way". I will watch for what the photographers will be using at the Paris summer Olympics. And if either Nikon or Cannon will have loaners.
@robertsaunders5740 Seems all of the camera makers are asking more and more for any new camera bodies rolled out. Canon R1 $6299 per B&H listing. Really? Thanks for the comment!
@@folkartandcamera Thanks and I should have looked first. The new Canon release, R5 Mark II is $4,300. After watching videos about both. The R1 has superfast read wright speed for fast action sports and has the 3 choices of battery grip. And it seems that the masses are using the 600mm sport lens for $16,000. My local camera store has/had a used one for sale and he asked if I wanted to try it on mine? No thanks, only $6,000 and it would be my luck I would drop it. I expect most of the users are on an expense account and a tax write off. Then again, a new Hasselblad sells for $10,000.
Good Evening. Wow, so You're going to ditch the Leofoto? I’m sorry it didn't work out for You. You know You can get a center column, and I am thinking it should have come with one? It is not quite as good as a built in one, but it works, and can be removed easier than one that is already in the tripod. You seem to be a Manfrotto guy, and that seems to explain why You like the overpriced Gitzo. Not intending to be snarky. I have had manfrotto before and just did not like them. I’ve had Sirui (Sue Ray ) before and grew to dislike their tripods, but I have two of their monopods, and love them. Of course it is a personal thing, and very subjective. BTW, Leofoto is now offering a new ‘X’ line of tripods, and also a ‘Lifetime’ Warranty on their products. You might check out FLM. They make a great tripod. And they offer great Customer Service. I almost owned a FLM, but B&H botched up and sent me one with issues. I had to return it. It was the second one, and was bought as new, but arrived with a problem, so I just gave up trying to get one that didn't seem used? I wouldn’t be too quick to dismiss Canon’s new entries; I do feel the R1 is a little underwhelming, when One considers how long it has been ‘in the works,’ and their Flagship nonetheless. The R5II will be a very compelling camera. Just my $.02. 😊 I see Kenmore Camera is running some great sales. I wish I lived close to a big store like that. Take care and stay safe and Happy Shooting.
@georgedavall9449 Just a bit of humor re Canon. As I've mentioned on the channel, shot Canon for decades. I think these newest camera bodies were desperately needed to refresh their line. As for Gitzo... yep there's a reason I couldn't recall on camera what I paid - have tried to put it out of mind. Thanks for the comment, and apparently for watching all the way through!
That Z 105mm f2.8 MC VR is an awesome lens and it is very sharp, had one with my Z6 II and it performed quite well. I did have issues when using it for video and tracking ducks in a pond, maybe it was the Z6 II. Have you tried it tracking thins on the Z8?
@waynerm002 I'm still on the front end of using this lens, so don't know all its qualities. It'll be mainly for video. 105 has VR, but did Nikon design that in for photographers to use freehand macro shooting? Time will tell how it does.... Thanks for the comment!
I have the 105mm lens but I don't use it often. I just recently learned something new about macro and about this lens. This lens has focus breathing which is not too common with most Nikon z lenses. I've used the focus stacking feature on my z6 II with this lens. I always have to crop in on the photo after focus stacking them in photoshop. I know there's better software than photoshop for this. I was told I need a focusing rail, focus on one spot and then adjust the camera forward using the rail to get my stacks. But it seems like I would get similar results if I'm slowly moving the camera towards the subject after each shot.
@JohnRoth-f9e I've been testing the 105 a bit as a non-macro. However if I was buying a lens more for portraits, it'd be the 85 1.8 at less money. Thanks for the comment!
I have thought about the 105mc but I currently have a 105vr 2.8 in the bag. I don’t use it a lot mostly for wildflowers in the spring. Not sure I would upgrade to the 105mc.
@rdphoto2 forgot to mention in the video this one is a VR designation also... it may have edged out the trusty 24-120 in these tests at least. thanks for the comment!
Good episode. I didn’t purchase the Z6iii either. I am hopeful there will be an APSc offering from Nikon soon that will blow our socks off. Will be interesting to see what you do with that new Samsung Phone. Take care.
@rdphoto2 Thanks! Summer doldrums for views though. I saw your recent landscape photography seminar, some days after it was posted. Excellent piece, but you were robbed on views. Indeed, am planning more tests with the new phones. This was just introducing them. Thanks again for the comment!
In China Sirui is pronounced SeeRoo like see the Kangaroo. I bought mine used without a head and put my extra Promaster ball head on it. Carbon fiber-when it is 30* F with 30mph winds and taking pictures of waves crashing against a lighthouse you will appreciate how much warmer it is compared to setting up a heavy aluminum tripod. Mine also has a leg that comes off to be a monopod, but not tried it.
Exactly what i wanted to know. I already have a Z8 and 100-400. I was looking at the Zf for compact scenarios in low light but i do need the 100-400 indoors. I'll be sticking with the Z8
In real life the differences between those lenses ,in good lighting any way, is minimal. I wish camera companies focused less on "sharpness" and optical perfection and more on quality of life upgrades to photography. But alas, with the bottom falling out on camera sales Nikon and the other big camera manufactures are fighting for the same small but wealthy photographers who are willing to spend hundreds if not thousands on small optical improvements.
@rdjmontalvo. Yep, getting to that last 5% of output costs 200 percent more. It's the treadmill we're on, if we allow ourselves to be. Overall I found the 28mm quite acceptable for the price paid. Thanks for the comment!
If I want to get the Nikon 28-400mm, is it too big for everyday use on a Zf? Do people use the dedicated shutter and ISO dials on the Zf or just get it for the look and end up just use the front and rear dials more which means the Z6III will make more sense with the better grip and even better EVF even let say you just want to use a small lens on it? Also what camera and lenses you carry or you just use phone while travel and everyday hangout and situations? I shoot for fun, art, contest and gig if possible tho I haven't done yet, my plan is to get that lens with Zf ith the 28-400mm and a Sony Xperia 1 VI phone (26,24,48,85-170, 2X macro) to be always with me waterproof and macro camera, down the line I might get the 14-30 and Voigtländer 50mm F1 if I want to maximize what I can get from wider shots and also when I need boleh which is rare time but that manual lens and aesthetic of the lens is nice! And I love Yellow colour, hope Nikon will make a Yellow colour Zf like they did with the new colour entries on the Zf! 💛
@NetvoTV Haven't been able to test the 28-400 yet, but Nikon's non-S line of lenses is getting better with each new release. Probably quite do-able on a Zf... Thanks for the comment!
Do you use iPhone or Android, if android which android and if iPhone, do you think there is some features and usabilities that android can't provide as a photographer? Do you carry your camera or just phone in day to day and travel? Do you use more specialised lens for your camera and just use your phone for more common wide angle side of focal lengths? Sony Xperia 1 VI (16,24,48,85-170,2X macro, waterproof) only for travel or still get a Zf with 28-400mm? I shoot for fun and join contest and create art and maybe gig if possible tho haven't done yet. I might get a 14-30 and Voigtländer 50mm F1 later too but not a priority for now Do you use the shutter dial on the Zf or end up just use the front and rear dials which end up might as well get the Z6III? Do Zf really bring more joy to shooting, how? With that 28-400mm long lens, is there still joy to use it on Zf compare to a small lens, and from a distance, you can't make much differences between retro camera and typical mirrorless from a non photographer point of view, it's the length of lens and then at closer distance the shape of the EVF shape the looks of the camera isn't it, one to make it if it's a professional gear and latter you will get that retro look as long as it's a sharp EVF shape like the Sony A7 series at least from a distance, right?
Over a period of many years, I twice had camera systems that I thought I would be happy with, using a 50mm macro. Both times, I later bought a 100 macro. Last year, when I went to Nikon mirrorless, I got the 14-30, 24-70 f/4, and 70-200. Not sure if I wanted the 105 macro. When I saw the price reduced, I bought it. It does not get nearly the use of the 24-70 and 70-200. Occasionally, I like one lens, so carry just the macro, depending on where I am. It does pair up nicely with the 24-70 if I see I won’t need a longer telephoto. I never really cared using the 50 macro in the field. Its best attribute was the compactness. The 105 macro has a narrower angle of view, thereby make a less distracting background in addition to greater working distance.
@kerrygrim7934 The 14-30 is a real workhorse for me, hoping the 105 becomes the same. I have experience with closeup shooting, but macro is a new fascination. Thanks for the informative comment!
Your LCD comparison flip vs tilt was very helpful. Thinking through the z6iii vs z8 screen comparison. Appreciate your hands on feedback presented here.
Good Evening! What, another Tripod?! Wow! LOL @ 08:06. 😆 Hey, with Photography, if it isn’t sticks, , its bags, heads, lenses, etc etc…… ( Sue Ray ) That is how I have heard Sirui Reps pronounce it, as well as others. Used to be a big Sirui fan, now, not so much. Love their Monopods. They make a few really solid ball heads. You will have to report back on that new set of legs. I love my little LS 284 C Pro Leofoto, with waterproof leg locks, really stiff CF legs, and ‘four’ yes four position leg settings. 2.6 pounds or something like that, and around 53 inches in height. Small light and compact. Well, enough of all that. Footage at the close was superb! Who was that handsome rascal at the very end? Sure looked familiar? Stay safe. Happy Shooting! 😊
I have both of the MC lenses. I mostly use the 50 as a pet portrait lens because you can get in nice and close for smaller critters. For macro work I found myself always wanting more working distance. I think one it's main purposes is for document digitization. The 105 by far gets the bulk of my use because it also makes a pretty nice all around people/portrait/landscape lens too as long as you exclude things that require really fast focusing speeds. It wouldn't be my first or even third choice to grab it for fast sports like hockey or bird in flight shots, but you would certainly be able to get keepers with it if you were out with a single lens. It's deadly sharp too, I'd put it in the same category as the 70-200 or Plena. I think you'll get a lot of use out of it.
@HellBatDC You're on the right track comparing this lens to the Plena, I'd already planned to include it in a matchup soon. Thanks for the comment and for the info!
I have had my Z 100-400 since it launched, and IMHO this is not an ideal lens for wildlife. Slower moving, larger wildlife is mostly fine if you can get close enough and shoot under 300mm. But, the AF on this lens is rather slow, it is less sharp above 300mm, not good resolving power in less than good light at the long end, and there is 0.0 magic/3D pop at the long end. Your best bet right now for a small, light, fast AF, sharp, at least some magic/3D pop, etc., lens for your Z camera, at the wider end of the super tele spectrum, is the F 300 f4E PF via the FTZ. It is considerably sharper at 300 f4 vs the Z 100-400 at 300mm f5.3. The PF lens gets even sharper corner to corner at f5.6, whereas the Z 100-400 does not generally get sharper if you stop it down (maybe a small amount in the corners). The PF lens is excellent with the TC-14III or in crop mode on a Z7/Z8/Z9, whereas the Z 100-400 overall degrades a far amount with a 1.4x TC. I know its prime vs zoom here, but, honestly, being able to go 300/450mm in FX/DX mode is plenty good enough for a lot of casual wildlife shooting. The 300 PF has very fast AF, good/great VR depending on which Z camera, and can be gotten for under $800 in 10/10 condition in the used market. 2.06 lbs with the FTZII and lens hood attached and just a pleasure to carry, travel, hiking.
@free-qe6wx. Thanks for the comment and interesting analysis! I mostly shoot the 400 4.5 prime now for wildlife or I'll use the Plena 135 and toggle to DX mode for intermediate. I still like the 100-400 but it's fast becoming a shelf lens that I grab only when light is really good. Thanks again!
@@folkartandcamera The main issue I have with the Z 400 f4.5 is price. Even on sale I think its just too expensive. The second issue is that wide open the Z 400 at f4.5 and Z 100-400 at f5.6 have virtually identical center sharpness. To really get the best sharpness out of the Z 400 f4.5 you need to be shooting at f5.6, which then brings the F 500 f5.6E PF lens into the discussion. Both of those at f5.6 is no contest; the 500 PF is a lot sharper corner to corner. And these days they are going for around the same price, but you get the extra 100mm of reach with the 500 PF. Some of the older AF-S F mount lenses I agree that the AF, VR, etc., are a bit janky, pronounced CA, and other IQ issues compared to Z lenses. But both the F mount PF's got the latest/greatest, and they are quite good AF, VR, CA, etc., and totally viable options in a Z world.
@robertsaunders5740 The 28 feels like a bargain. Editing these clips on the computer I could see a bit more output from the 35 1.8, not as much from the 14-30. Thanks for the comment!
is the Z DX lenses are similar to the old DX lenses? Are they compatible? Do we need any adapter to reused the old DX lenses on the new Nikon Z30? Thanks, and kind regards,
@lanphanh Nikon F lens to Z needs an adapter to work on Z cameras. Z lens mount, either DX or full frame works on either DX or full frame Z mount cameras. Thanks for the comment!
It seems like a decent competitor to the Fujifilm FinePix XP130. The video quality is good and the audio can be fixed with an external mic/recording device.
A Z 500 f5.6 would be completely unnecessary at this time. The F 500 f5.6E PF is still a perfectly viable lenses on the Z mount via the adapter, and is is flanked by the Z 400 f4.5 and Z 600 f6.3 PF lenses. There are plenty of other priorities in the 200mm+ lens lineup. A 200mm F2, 100-300 f2.8, 300 f2.8, a high end version of the 100-400 but f4 and with a built in TC, 500 f4, and others.
@@folkartandcamera Personally, I think a Z 100-300 f2.8 would be the bigger seller, especially among the paid indoor sports crowd. A 300 f2.8 is a lot more of a niche lens. I just bought a used 10/10 condition F 300 f4E PF for 1/3 the new price, and while also a bit of niche lens it is very light, small, and a heck of a lot more hiking/travel friendly.
@robynowski2945 Thinking the rawhides should be able to be re-used, but I always toss them since a steady supply comes from dogs' leftovers. Thanks for the comment!
Maybe Nikon Z mount will come on the excellent Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports. I do not think Nikon will come with a new 500mm 5.6 for Z mount. I have the excellent Sigma 500mm for Sony E mount. Nikon need a new Z7III
I believe the Z8 is Nikon's answer to the Z7iii. I would say that the announcement this week will show a Z6iii as the new camera. I also feel that the Z50ii will be the second body this year. Nikon needs to produce a APS-c body with a little more horsepower to bridge the current Z50 and Zf. A Z50ii with the right internals could be a replacement for the D500. If they did a Z50ii right, I would consider it over a Z6iii. I currently have the Z6ii and Z8 and both bodies are fantastic.
@rdphoto2 Yep spot on. Whatever they call the new APSC camera, I hope it'll be a fully qualified camera body with top shelf capabilities. Nikon has product for the $600-900. I want to see what the $1200-1400 tier will bring. Thanks, as usual, for the comment!
I agree. I doubt Nikon releases a Z7III, unless its 60MP+ and more of an A7R5 competitor. The A7R4 was a total flop and the A7R5 is not exactly a big seller, so why bother. A Z50II or even better a Z70 with IBIS would be quite welcome. It doesn't need to be an APS-C version of the Z8.
I’m not sure we should expect a 500 5.6. It seems they’ve replaced the F-Mount 300 and 500 focal length with the 400 and 600 in the Z Mount. Not sure we need a 500 in the middle.
@steveblythe9504 Thanks for the comment! You may be right, the wife really likes the 600, I prefer the 400. But how many people shooting a 100-400 might buy a 500 5.6 prime? Nikon has smarter people than me and must've already given thought.
I agree it would be nice to have the 500. I have the 400 but can’t afford the 600 yet. I have the 1.4X TC to get the extra reach. I guess we have to think of the 400 replacing the 300 with extra reach rather than replacing the 500 but with less reach!! Maybe they’ll let Sigma fill the hole by putting a Z mount on their 500 5.6 which has had great reviews on the Sony mount.
@mikebreazeale2563 You're a long time subscriber and appreciate the input. Saying there's 'nothing' in this video- the wildlife clip alone takes HOURS of field time to get. All so my viewers can see 1 or 2 minutes of something real. Thanks!
Just a suggestion, DP Review has a camera and lens “timeline” on their site. It covers most major manufacturers and actually gives the date when a camera or lens was announced. For example they list chronologically Nikon cameras from the present time back to 1997. They call it a “product data base”.
