I read in the comments that the two successful sons tried to help, but the mother wouldn't sell the house. Ok, but does that mean that they couldn't at least pay the utilities, and get someone in once a week to clean up for their mother and sister? My siblings and I barely graduated from high school and we help our mother out with money, necessities and our time. You don't have to be rich to love your mom!

Living in LB has its pros and cons for sure. I live on Ocean Blvd., in Alamitos Beach, 9 blocks from downtown. It's nice having beach access across the street, but the constant emergency and firetruck sirens drive me crazy, especially at night! I have family living in the country in Valparaiso, Indiana and I could see myself retiring there someday. Now the harsh winters are another story! You can't beat the moderate climate on the West Coast.

What a wonderful 57-day travel adventure you're about to have that also includes Australia! No doubt it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience! It had been about 30 years since I had visited Hawaii, specifically Honolulu, and yes, much had changed. Sadly, a few months after our cruise, Frank passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. I lost my best friend of 30 years and my cruise buddy. I don't know if you also watched part 2, but I never finished editing to post part 3, which included Ensenada, Mexico, before returning to San Pedro and then back home to Long Beach. I just didn't have it in me with my friend's passing. Perhaps I will one day soon. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Safe travels, and thank you for your kind words! Bon voyage! 🛩️ 🛳️

I don't understand how they lived like they did. They stayed in one tiny bedroom together and didnt even keep that clean. The conditions were horrifying. If I had lived there I would have at least kept it clean and would have buried the trash if burning wasn't allowed. They apparently couldn't pay for trash services but they shouldn't have let garbage pile up. Imagine the smell. I can get messy sometimes but I pick up and most importantly I wash the walls, the floors and thoroughly clean objects as well as under and behind. They lived in filth and squalor. A lot of people never deep clean. Ever. They move in and let the grime collect for years. Some people live in their houses for years and never clean the ceiling fans, the doors, cupboards, behind the stove, etc. It's crazy to me. Some people are filthy. I can't stand people like this.

You have NO compassion, just rules. You should go clean up San Francisco, we could use you. I could mention so many things for you to dictate how people should live. You are something else. Yes, it's not healthy but you can see their unstableness, I guess you can't though, you should want to see clean and have everyone live like you. They could not be helped, their minds, please remember that. We could also use your counseling in Philly, Detroit, NYC, and use your special ways to tell people how they should live and we would have a better county, wouldn't say. I can't wait. This is what the British call “house poor”. People can be born into aristocracy, have a title, and live on a 500 year old estate, but not have money to buy school shoes. Old, rich estates require an income to maintain. The Edies, Big and Little, were high society, had an estate, but no income. Textbook “house poor”. To be clear, I wouldn’t say the Beal’s specifically squalid conditions are necessarily part of the “house poor” condition.

They were hoarders. House poor is when you pay the mortgage and then you have nothing left over…they weren’t this. This looks like every hoarders episode ever. Complete with the hoarding of animals.
@anastasia10017
@anastasia10017 3 месяца назад
@@_Elizabeth_theMaid They were not hoarders. The garbage piled up because they didn't have the money to pay for the garbage collection service. They were poor. so they just ended up with piles of garbage and no way to get rid of it. Why were they living in such a mess? Probably because of severe depression and abandonment and having nobody to turn to for help. Little Edie was trapped by her mother and so stressed, she lost all her hair. They sold all their precious jewelry and antiques to survive and were living with the remainders of stuff they grew up with. - little edie did not have new clothes, she was making outfits out of scarves and things she could pin together. These women were from a rich family that abandoned them. Big Edie was a stubborn weirdo who refused to conform to normal behavior and she embarrassed her rich husband and her rich father - so the husband left her and the father disowned her and neither one would support her financially anymore so she was left penniless. Her husband paid for child support only. Little Edie was supposed to marry a rich man but the divorce of her parents (shameful at the time), the flamboyant behavior of her mother and the resulting financial shakiness of the family would have tainted her reputation and made her less acceptable to other families. The really sad part is that little Edie has 2 wealthy, successful lawyer brothers who did not help their mother and sister and did not help to support them financially. Little Edie's brothers left her to take care of their demented mother by herself and gave her no help. Little Edie was trapped.

They had no income and Big Edie was lowkey abusive. She didn't want to be alone and therefore didn't want Little Edie to leave her and did everything to make sure she couldn't. Little Edie had many offers to marry rich men when she was younger and basically could've been set for life, and her mother by default, but Big Edie didn't have the foresight for that. It is devastatingly tragic that 6 months after our visit to beautiful Lahaina, this historic resort town is now almost completely gone. With the fires that started on August 8, 2023, the economic and cultural heart of the island was reduced to an ashen landscape in the deadliest US wildfire in more than 100 years. I'd like to express my deepest condolences to the families who's loved ones lost their lives as a result of the disaster in Maui, and my heartfelt sympathy to those who have lost their homes and businesses. 💔

I watched the documentary several times now and it affects me each time, it breaks my heart. I bought the book, it is really eye opening. These two women where betrayed by people they loved (father and brothers) and they where left destitute. That angers and saddens me. Much of Little Edie's diary is in it. She was pretty young when she wrote it but one would think it was written by a much older and wiser person. She moved to Florida and swam in the ocean every day until her passing.
