Hi Toni. Thank you for this great video. It's been a big help for me. I have a question about positioning pattern pieces on the fold. I find that it is kind of tricky to get the piece exactly lined up with the fold. Is there a method for getting it in the right position so that I don't have too much or too little fabric after I cut it out? Is it advisable to press the fold before putting the piece on it so that it will lay flat? Just thinking about it, I don't really want to have a pressed fold in the middle of my skirt front but, I don't know. How do I get them in the right position? (I know that you're probably quite busy with the wedding dress and everything thing that goes with that so no rush or pressure to respond right away.) Thanks, Toni.
I always have time to answer questions! I lay the center front pattern piece right on top of the fold and pin it in place. Then I smooth it out to pin the top, bottom and remaining side. I don’t recommend hard pressing the center fold. Your are right there will be a visible fold down the front if you do that 😉 Hope my explanation helps!
I found that putting the pattern together and cutting the fabric takes soooooo long (I print out my patterns). The sewing takes almost less time than that. It would take me longer than 2h to just cut out every pattern piece
Yeah this was a fairly basic pattern so it didn’t take too long. But I totally know what you mean. The cutting and marking process takes forever compared to sewing.
I am sorry your plans for the wedding dress didn't work out. I admire your resiliance and believe working on your honeymoon wardrobe will be exciting! I look forward to seeing the reveal.
So true! Seeing mistakes being made lets me know what to do to avoid them or fix them. However I completely understand a creator wanting to post the “perfect” video where everything works out flawlessly
I guess it depends on the type of creator you are. I don’t think it’s realistic to not show mistakes. I’m all about helping people get better at sewing and sharing what I learn when I figure out my mistakes 😉
@@SewSewLounge I am so thankful you do! 😁 I saw you mentioned on another short that you forgot to change the stitch and started sewing and that was such a mind opener for me! I thought it was just me as a tired adventurous beginner that did that! My datorised machine resets the settings I changed when I turn it off so I accidentally made half a dress with a non elastic stitch when I meant to use the elastic one 🫣 I loved the outcome and the straight stitch made less of a bulk on the dress and was so quick to sew but future me might need to repair a few seams because the fabric is very elastic and the seams are not. At least I wasn’t making leggings or something 🤣
So yes, your video was very helpful. Great lighting, great audio, but is there any chance you can put a bobby pin in your hair so your hair doesn’t keep falling in your face? You have such a pretty face, but your hair that kept falling was a little bit distracting. Just trying to be honest.😂❤
I started sewing when I was about 12 because I was tall I couldn't get anything to fit I got my Bernina when I was about 30 and that changed everything
If you don't have much money discounted fabric is your savior. This will let you get the experience you need and you do not feel obligated to keep the project when done.
I wish it was still a requirement to teach sewing in home ec. I feel left out having to learn it all by my self. RU-vid has offered many teaching lessons over the years. In the 90's youtube was still young and didn't have these vids left and right. I feel left out not knowing how to sew my own cloths until my late 30's. My mom was a master seamstress but hated it so much and belittled me each time I tried to sew my own garments. After I moved into my own place for the third time i finally dived deep into sewing. It's cheaper and you can make cloths that actually fit. I have a hard time finding clothing that fits now because of how chunky society is getting. Or because everyone is buying more online there is less in the stores than there use to be and they often just never have my size in the stores. Or the designers have an odd idea of what should fit for people my weight/build and they can never get it right so shirts are often too baggy.
I’m sad to hear you had such a hard time getting started sewing. My mom hated sewing and her sewing machine and that’s why I never learned. Plus I wasn’t allowed to take home ec; I had to take computer programing 🙄 I prefer making my own clothes and choosing my own fabric to create something unique. You’re right, clothes are expensive and poorly made these days. I’d much rather spend the money and time to make it myself and love the finished result. If you ever have any questions shoot me an email. I’m happy to answer questions if I can 😉
I still think you and your friend had the fit in the bag When she was pinning the dress on you it was perfect. I'm sorry that it didn't work out ultimately And I'm looking forward to seeing the dress you ordered....
I agree that the base dress looks and fits great. The rest of it just didn’t work out. I’ll probably use it for something else. It just wasn’t what I wanted for my wedding dress.
I serge around facings and the facing for the front notch. It looks very neat if you take your time around the curve at the bottom, lifting your pressure foot as needed. Or you can sew about 3/16 inch away from the edge and press to the wrong side along the stitching line and then stitch a scant 1/4 inch from the edge. Turning twice creates a ridge that can sometimes be seen from the outside or an edge that looks uneven. Even serging and then turning looks neater but is unnecessary.
I love your strength and realism, life and time is going to trip you up. And it is unbelievably hard to make a decision like you had to make in this video. Know that, I loved watching you work through your dress process, it was beautiful. Today you showed your bravery and your loss was heart breaking. Keep making these beautiful plans. The material will wait for your skills to grow. I look forward to seeing the next 'less stressful' project come together. And we will be here for when you drape again.🙂
I'm sorry your plans didn't work out, but please show us how that dress is put together once you get it. I'm so curious now. I hope you have a wonderful wedding!
If I were getting married , I would not pick anything too complicated & too time consuming to the point I'm not gonna get anything else done , pick something stylish yet that you know will look good & eye catching , I would have started my dress way back in the spring , sew I could really take my time , well I wish you all the very best of luck , I'm praying you get that dress 👗 together in time for your special in day ❤🙏🏾
I just got engaged on March 16, so starting in the spring wasn’t really an option. Plus, where’s the fun in making something that isn’t spectacular? I tried and it didn’t work out. Thankfully I found the dress in my size and I can get it in time. Things didn’t go as planned but everything will work out in the end. And that’s what matters 😉
Thank you for sharing your journey with honesty! We can all relate! I think you were brave and tenacious in your attempt--I'd have given up way before you did, with lots of cussing to go with it! I'm sure the dress you ordered will look fabulous. Where will you go for your honeymoon?
Thanks Brenda. I can honestly say that I tried my best and it didn’t work out. I’m sure I will be happy wearing the original design and I will be much less stressed between now and the wedding.
Toni, my heart broke a little when you decided to buy the dress instead. I love and admire your determination, bravery and skill for attempting to make the dress yourself. All of that being said, self preservation first! I admire your ability to say when enough is enough! Yes, put your valuable time and resources into the fun, less stressful projects! As a full time employee, part time sewist, i know how scarce time and energy can be. So proud of you for your ambition. 🎉
Aww thank you. Trust me it was a very difficult decision to buy the dress. I’d looked at it a week earlier and decided to keep trying. Then after another week of unsuccessful draping it was just time to call it quits. Today was a very long day at court and I’m glad I don’t have to stress about making my wedding dress. Thank you for your comment ❤️
(Linda). Hi Toni, I think you have made a fantastic decision!! You were putting way too much stress on yourself to make this dress. Admittedly this is a very complex dress to make and in my opinion unless you are a seamstress and do this day in day out it might..i say might have doable. So don't be sad or beat yourself up, you 'tried'. Wishing you all the best xx
Hi Linda. Thank you for your support. It was not a decision I made lightly because I really wanted to make my dress. But it didn’t work out. And things weren’t getting better by spending more time on it. As time passes, I know it was the right decision ❤️
Ok I'll weigh in here. First it's very fun to watch you sew. I feel like I'm watching myself. Ha. Second you need to allow for the teaching time in your calculations. Third - I agree here with the hand basting because of the high poly content. Otherwise i would baste with basting tape or a glue stick. Fourth, I pretty much always block fuse and then cut the piece which allows for shrinkage etc. Re stabilizing - great idea. Sewkeasy has some fusible tape. I have mixed emotions about it. Thanks for a fun session. Kay in Dallas, Texas
Thanks Maxine! I remember you were ready to take them out 🤣 no costuming for me this year. The director, who canned my costumes last minute, got fired! Good riddance.
Tip from Margaret Islander's industrial techniques for seams - right hand thumb under fingers on top and slightly tilt the fabric up. It will help to counteract the opposite actions of the feed dogs vs. the foot. Kind of an even feed by hand.
It’s funny that you mentioned the Islander method. I’ve tried holding fabric that way and it feels so weird!! But I’m working on it, because it really does make the fabric feed better 😉
I would have converted the darts into a princess seam to remove the excess in the neckline. The drape would have obscured those seams. What a project! I hope you get a chance to use your muslin into something else you would love to wear.
I had a similar pattern that had princess seams and one shoulder. But then there would have been a center back seam with a zipper which didn’t work with the original design. But yes maybe I will end up making the on shoulder dress in the future.
I think it’s a wise decision to move on and concentrate on making dresses for the honeymoon. It’s sad that it didn’t work out, but you could make something out of the basic pattern now that it fits perfectly. Good luck with the new dress!
Thank you! I feel better now that I made the decision. Honeymoon sewing will be more fun and less stressful. I’ll hang on to the pattern for the base dress. It will still look beautiful in the purple silk shantung.
Absolutely the right decision, Toni, to cut yourself some slack by removing the stress of making the dress. You should allow yourself the joy of just anticipating your wedding to a wonderful man, followed by a fun honeymoon. Well done, kiddo.
Thanks Toni, and again, congratulations! You will be a beautiful bride. I wish all good things for you and your husband in your marriage. If I can be of any help to you in the future, don't hesitate to ask. I enjoy watching your videos. We all learn together. Sue
I’m pretty sure you could’ve done it if you had more time and gotten a better look at the actual dress. I’m happy you were able to purchase the dress! That’s awesome!
Solid decision. I made my MOB dress. But I didn’t start with an aspiration. I started with what’s in my comfortable skill level with the time I had and finding the fabric much later than I wanted to. So I did a wrap and lengthened it. It wasn’t a joy. And I wasn’t the bride. So good for you. I bet you could make a stunner of your base dress though. Because it fits like a dream now and Looks great. Enjoy.
You are the second viewer to suggest that I keep working with the base dress. Yes you’re right, I did get the fit down perfectly. Now to just even out the darts and I’ll have a beautiful dress 😊
I love that you share the real process. I’m back to sewing it’s been a fast 50 years since I was an almost perfect size 10 in patterns and now I’m about four different sizes depending on what you measure. I love that grandma helped you and her insight was helpful to me too about adjusting the darts. I also have a slimmer above bust. Nothing much else slim at this point. Anyhow very sympathetic to your juggling. BTDT So happy you found love. Have fun
I think you made the right decision. Nobody needs xtra stress. But your video was still very helpful. I enjoyed watching your fitting and draping process. You also showed us that in real life sometimes things don’t go as planned. It is disappointing but we have to pick ourselves up and do a plan b sometimes. Thanks for the video. Look forward to what you show next!
Thank you for your comment. Each day that passes confirms it was the right decision to reduce my stress. My dealing skills aren’t bad, they just weren’t up for this challenge. I’m glad you enjoyed that part. I debated editing it out of the video. Thank you for watching 😊
Your disappointment was clearly visible by the expression on your face. However, you don't need the stress of designing of dress added to your wedding plans. Whatever your choice, you will be beautiful. Best Wishes to you and your loved one.
Hi there. My name is Sue. I have a formal and wedding dress business and have several decades' sewing experience. You and your dress will be gorgeous on your wedding day! Would you mind if I offered some advice? I love your original inspiration dress. I would recommend buying the same pattern for the basic sheath in a size matching your upper chest, not your full bust measurement. Next, resize the full bust, if needed. You may meed to shorten your back bodice and possibly the front bodice area. Try to find another pattern with a huge bow...I think Vogue has a new one now on an evening dress. Restyle or resize the piece as you desire it to be. Line the entire two-layered pieces with a couple layers of tulle, and possibly place horsehair braid along the outer seam edges only. Then drape separate long bias cut pieces for the bow streamers. You may want to put one or two layers of tulle into the double- layered streamer sections. Use as many streamers as you need to achieve the look you want. I would keep the one shoulder style. That will look great on you and is the current trend. Good luck, have a blessed wedding, and CONGRATULATIONS!!
Hi Sue! Thank you for your suggestions. You really know what you are doing! If I had more time I would try them 😉 but given my full time job and upcoming travel schedule, I don’t think I can make it happen. For now I’ve just ordered the Solace London dress and plan to wear it on my wedding day. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise ❤️
