The RU-vid home of the Dayton Kali Academy.

Located in Dayton, Ohio.

We are a school that is passionate about training and teaching the Southeast Asian Martial Arts.

We specialize in, but are not limited to the following arts:
Kali - Eskrima - Panantukan - Silat - Muay Thai - Jun Fan/JKD

Dayton Kali Academy’s foundation is built upon the art & philosophy of Jeet Kune Do. By using no way as the way and having no limitations as limitations, students are encouraged to research, experiment and create their own experience. Students can choose to work through the curriculums for certification or simply enjoy the classes for recreational purposes.

Philosophy:
Movement is universal.
No one system has a monopoly on all that is good and functional in the martial arts.
The system that one chooses only matters if that person grows.
The greatest gift of the Martial Arts is they can assist the practitioner in growing physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

The purpose of this Intro is to visually highlights the Art of the martial art before getting into the verbal teachings of this free public video.

I’ve trained in TKD, TSD, KUNG FU since 1977! I’m 8th Dan TKD. I took my first seminar in 1994 in Kali and have been studying since then. I love it! Every Art has its place. Every Art teaches movements that are useful. A single movement/technique from whatever Art could save your life! Great series of videos Guhru!

This is a great video!!! I couldn't understand, though, the difference between cruzada crossing and the gunting sissoring hands entry. Also, when the opponent jabs high to your face, couldn't you simultaneously execute your lead hand jab underneath his incoming jabbing arm as an entry like a boxing counter punch????
@DaytonKaliAcademy
@DaytonKaliAcademy 4 месяца назад
Thanks for commenting. I personally do not use Gunting & Cruzada as interchangeable terms. Of course, this is probably just a style thing. I've studied several FMA styles and 3 of those styles have very specific techniques (or group of techniques) that they term Cruzada. Philosophically, I see no problem using these terms interchangeably. As far as your question about entries, the systems I teach have a total of 44 different entries. This video only covered 7 of those entries. Check out the write up that accompanies this video.

😢original called Suntukan NOT Panantukan-Panuntukan. Inosanto made up the name, might mix with shotokan or westerner don’t know how to pronounce it. It’s a form of street fighting in the Philippines, Inosanto learn from lucay lucay. It was created during Spanish rules. Use in America-Philippines war, WW2 guerilla warfare. Art been practiced for over 100yrs, started from Saaverdra Eskrima. Mixing with western boxing is NOT the real suntukan, we as practitioners use basics strikes number as guidelines of hits.
@DaytonKaliAcademy
@DaytonKaliAcademy 4 месяца назад
Your facts are mixed up. Dan Inosanto did not make up the name Panantukan / Panuntukan. His instructors Juan "Johnny" Lacoste, Leodoro "Lucky" Lucaylucay, and Floro Villabrille were using the term. You are correct about them using the term instead of Suntukan so westerns wouldn't confuse it with Shotokan Karate. Also, your claim the Art came from Saavedra Eskrima is strange, considering Lorenzo “Tatay Ensong” Saavedra lived from 1852 - 1944. The Art is much older than this. It seems Panantukan, Panuntukan, and Suntukan are ultimately interchangeable terms. I think this is fine considering that all these terms pay homage to their indigenous origin. I think your crying face emoji 😥 would be better spent complaining about the continued use of the name "Philippines" - considering that this name pays homage to King Phillip II of Spain with disregard for the island nation's pre-Spanish history.
@denden01161
@denden01161 4 месяца назад
@@DaytonKaliAcademy yes 1500ad king Phillip claimed it, but originally 1100ad Indonesian from Java arrive in cebu and brought their technology of metal and the art. AETAS-IGOROT(original indigenous people) CEBUANAS (visaya) originally Indonesian, the art was established 1521ad recorded. The art was pass down to father n son thru generations but diluted with westerners boxing. Dad and my teacher told me keep the art simple don’t diluted it. Saaverdra is father of eskrima, balintwak, Doce Pare, Modern Arnis, San Miguel etc is their lineage. Of course teachers diluted it and has their own taste and flavors.

@@denden01161 You're passionate about your Art. That's good. But your description of FMA history seems way off. The Art was not established in 1521. 1521 is the date of when Ferdinand Magellan was killed on the island of Mactan. The Art predates the coming of the Spanish. You seem to be describing the history of the Cebu people and the FMA that came out Cebu. I don't understand how you can discount the hundreds of other styles that exist throughout the Philippines.
@denden01161
@denden01161 4 месяца назад
@@DaytonKaliAcademy I know it’s was established in 1521 after Magellan fell by lapu-lapu That’s where it was recorded, just rounding it off. Indonesian Srivijayan Empire now called (visayan) who was banned from Java Island landed in Mactan 1100. Which clan warfare in term created the art and recorded the real establishment of the art. The art spread to 3 main island which have their own version Visayan call it Eskrima, Manilas(Luzon)call it Arnis, Mindanaowan call it Kali(Kalistas means Eskrimador)have their own flavor or translation, which it’s kool. To each its own, peace my Kalistas brother .

Out of due respect, your roof block is too horizontal. You need to angle it, you need pitch to your roof. We don’t have a flat roof.
@DaytonKaliAcademy
@DaytonKaliAcademy 7 месяцев назад
This technique is named after the ridge pole of an equatorial house. The ridge pole is horizontal, just like the apex of modern roof construction. FMA terms & techniques significantly vary depending on the system. The technique you're describing could also be called a wing. Once again, this depends on your system of study. I teach 9 styles of FMA out of my school. This video shows one of the drills with appropriate terminology from one of those systems.
@stephenderong9151
@stephenderong9151 7 месяцев назад
It’s always been taught to always assume the weapon is going to continue its’ path. We can’t assume our roof is strong enough to stop the attack. But then again, I’ve only studied Modern Arnis, Doce Pares, and a little Pekiti Tirsia. Anyhow, great content!

Your usage of all caps and cursing erroneously implies that you know what you're talking about 🤪. The usage of Hubad / Hubud in the FMA has nothing to do with sexuality or nudity of the human body 🤣🤣🤣. In the context of the Filipino Martial Arts, Hubud or Hubad refers to "untie" or "bare". The full name of the drill showcased in this video is Hampak Higot Hubad Lubad. This translates as - To Hit, To Tie, To Untied, While Blending.

Though it turned out I had world class foot speed and athletic talent, after studying with Inosantos I ended up up kicking a lot of world class butt. That included some rather large "specimens" if you know what I mean. Panantukan rules.For elbows go with southeast Indo-China styles if you want to save time and get valid usage. Plus the stick is really the only legally relevant modern weapon.
