PANANTUKAN - also known as Filipino Boxing - is an empty hand art with many of its techniques based on the movements of the knife, stick & sword.
The purpose of this video is to share 7 entries from the Panantukan that I like to teach.
Disclaimer (3 pointers about this video):
1. First off, for this particular set of material, it would help if the student already has good boxing skills. And what that means is: clean punches, strong striking skills, good footwork & live sparring. Also, of equal importance, the student should have some skill and understanding of the weaponry from the FMA.
2. Secondly, I think a student should have an understanding of the history of the Art. Unfortunately, this is beyond the scope of this video. But I think it’s really important. If you’re interested, personally I would recommend Guro Dan Inosanto’s Panantukan video. It’s volume 4 in his Definitive Collection. In it, he covers the history, lineage, and several techniques. 3. And lastly, you should be aware that not all FMA systems have Panantukan. There are several different styles, systems, methods out there ...and this can be really confusing if you’re a new student looking to study the Art.

In order to fully grasp the concepts exemplified by Panantukan, you have to understand the historical context. Many of the empty hand motions come from the weaponry methods. Therefore, to make a good video (this is my opinion of course), the weaponry tactics should be shown in relation to the empty hand motions.
The problem is much of the true blade work is lethal. Therefore, I feel most of that knowledge is not for public consumption. As an instructor, you have to have what's called - ‘Morality in Transmission of the Art.’
Now, of course, not all the techniques come from the weaponry. In fact, to the untrained eye, much of the Art of Panantukan may actually look like a dirty version of western boxing. That’s because there are actually two versions of the Art: There’s the original historical combative version / Then there’s a version that became a Sport around the year 1905. This is why understanding the history is so important.
What is Kali?
“Kali” is the ancient indigenous martial art form from the Philippine Archipelago (formerly Maharlika) that pre-dates the Spanish conquest of the island nation and is largely based on the use of the sword & other weaponry.
Kali is a weapons-based martial art with 12 areas of study.
Panantukan is a sub-section of Kali (see Area #7).
