Sumbrada is the “Counter for Counter” training method from the Filipino Martial Arts. This video showcases the basic concepts of the Sumbrada Training Method, as taught by Guro Jeremiah Lovejoy, head instructor of the Dayton Kali Academy.
Timeline
00:00 Intro
01:12 Description
01:46 Free Flow
02:06 Basic Drills
03:02 Why Train This?
03:59 Basic Drills (take 2)
04:58 Conclusion
Drills:
Tres Teros - long range
Dulog Sumbrada - middle range
Punyo Sumbrada - middle to close range
Punyo Hubad - close range
I want to emphasize that these drills are range specific...as you change the range, the drill changes.
The real skill development occurs when you play outside the patterns. The Truth is Outside the Pattern!!! Just keep it counter for counter and flow.
This is not fighting! It’s a training method.
….It’s simply counter for counter…
….It enhances your skill, It shortens your response time, It makes you find an answer in the moment...no matter if your weapon is out of position, you have to find an answer!
*It’s a great practice of being deeply in the NOW ...in the moment...
**It’s also a training method you can take into old age...
***I want to close this video with giving gratitude to Guro Dan Inosanto for showing me where the sumbrada training method can go...and also, for inspiring me to push my limits...

This is the best fma video out there! I've been doing Kali for 8 years now and I have never found an instructor that explains why drills are done. They just go "we're doing sumbrada today" and leave it at that.

This is one of the best FMA videos on youtube. Very inspiring and motivating. And it helped me alot to finally make a decision and start with FMA (Pekiti Tirsia) at the age of 40. I hope these crazy corona time will end very soon, so i can start training. Greetings from germany and keep on flowing !!!
