I disagree. Many wash out early because we don’t have much for guidelines and standards like most other skilled trades professions. Now more than ever our skillsets are in demand by professions that require a fraction of said skillsets for far better compensation. Things are better than they have ever been and this can be a terrific career, but…we have a long way to go yet and far too many shop owners and managers who do not look to evolve, or consider themselves good enough.

Misleading title. The guy clearly states its an increase in "ARO" or average repair order. The title implies its the number of repair orders that doubles.

All I’m hearing is two socialist talk about getting more government involved with automotive repair. Having to hear their stupid great reset phrases, its like listening to Kamala Harris trying to explain economics.
@ChangingTheIndustry
@ChangingTheIndustry Месяц назад
Actually....you're listening to advocates who are working to ensure we DON'T have government intervention in Auto Repair by working to educate consumers, shops and industry alike to give us the tools we need to self regulate. But if speaking from an uninformed position is your MO, by all means, proceed 😁
@ryankooiman9069
@ryankooiman9069 Месяц назад
Quite the opposite! 2 huge supporters of free economy calling the industry to step up and do the right thing so government doesn’t start telling us what to do. We work with legislators each week to highlight the capabilities of the aftermarket and prove that we can do this responsibly and continue to offer the general public a choice of where to get their vehicles serviced.
@kevinoliver6461
@kevinoliver6461 Месяц назад
These industry professionals cannot affect what is already in motion. They can only help educate folks like yourself about how these technologies will change the way you operate in the bay. 2029 will bring the first major ADAS mandate to the industry and it will dramatically change the way you must address those vehicles from there on. And that won't be the last mandate either. These conversations will have zero affect on what NHTSA does going forward. All you can do is become better educated to be in a position to respond appropriately.

I always appreciate Mike's perspective but in this case he left a great deal out . RYR is often a first choice "go to" because pay rates have been held artificially low for many years and the truth is that it's easy. Increasing rates will increase GPM and requires very little work. While increasing value is important to help justify the price what is MORE important is realizing that increasing productivity and efficiency will yield better results without transferring the burden to the client.
@MikeAllen-ce9yt
@MikeAllen-ce9yt 2 месяца назад
Hi Dutch! Of course there are many things needed to operate a successful small business - setting appropriate rates is just one of them. When you have a format with a limited time frame you can only cover so much. Obviously the general subject of ‘improving your business’ could be discussed for days on end. I feel like we should talk about this and more… maybe on a stage? Maybe in Orlando soon? 😂

I was a tech for 25 years but I still have plenty of friends at Toyota. They are now repairing more vehicles. If there was high cost Repairs before Covid and these high prices these days, customers would trade it in for a new car. Now they spend 1-5k and just repair the issues.

I think we all saw this coming. And truthfully? The same should be happening with collision insurance as well! It's an unpopular opinion, sure, but when a business price isn't set by a free market, but a business that directly benefits by the lower price.....that's gotta set off red flags.....right? Let's look at John Eagle Collision, a case that set tons of precedent for collision repair, in some sense was caused by an organization that was pressured and squeezed by insurance companies. Maybe that's a stretch, but every day we're asked to use used parts, reduce labor rates, perform less than ethical repairs by organizations like car shield. But it's not cars shield who accepts the legal responsibility when the repair fails, or when someone is hurt? Would you believe me if I told you it wasn't Car Shield? I was once told by a very smart man, a local doctor, that the only way to fix the American Healthcare system was to return to a cash only basis. I had long been told that health insurance is a key component of adult life, that we all must have. But it's destroyed American health care. The reality is this, Braxton, anyone who is selling you something is interested in making the most money they can. And if that is a large organization from which the people in charge never see their client? You can bet your butt they don't care how their actions affect you.

So here's the thing. Did they earn the scholarships or did they just get them because they're women? I have no problem with a woman working on my car but stuff like this makes me think it's diversity hire and I'm probably not going to want to use that shop if that's the case

I really thought the other guy was going to say, "Right, unless it's the Tesla charging network." Roadtrips in a Tesla are easy. Any other auto maker? Yeah, it's a nightmare. But then again, who takes a golf cart on a road trip? Wrong device for the task. I have 2 Nissan Leafs, saving me hundreds of dollars a month in fuel, but I would have to be an idiot to think they are going on a road trip. Take the teslas on the road trips, or an ICE while there's still gas available.

I was dating a female service manager that attended these dealer association meetings where they discussed and agreed to these wage fixing and no-poach rules.They are trained by NADA and given directives to continually force their margins on service labor continually higher and higher.HARDCORE CARTEL CONDUCT! "Going forward, the Justice Department intends to criminally investigate naked no-poaching or wage-fixing agreements that are unrelated or unnecessary to a larger legitimate collaboration between the employers. These types of agreements eliminate competition in the same irredeemable way as agreements to fix the prices of goods or allocate customers, which have traditionally been criminally investigated and prosecuted as hardcore cartel conduct."

I filled out that survey a while ago lol. And I left After 25 Years as an auto tech. The part you both talk about, the owners is 100 percent correct. Before I left we had a meeting with the manager and advisors and owner. We had brought up things we would like to be helped with. And we as techs know it won’t all be solved or even looked into. But I clearly remember the dealership owner stand up and with a loud firm voice cleverly say, WELL IF YOU DONT LIKE IT HERE THEN LEAVE! That to me was the finale moment I said I’m happy to be leaving. This dealership has been around since 1965. And the family that owns it will never change. Even now they have huge issues with techs staying long term.

The other comment from the Midwest hit the nail on the head. Pay is horrible. I live in NW Ohio and nobody wants to pay a decent wage for technicians. They've got bodies in the shop, but most of them are just parts chamgers. I'm surrounded by ads looking for "experienced diagnostic technicians" that are only offering 20ish dollars an hour with horrible benefits and working hours. I though I found a decent position about 10 years ago with semi-decent pay and benefits, but they were a corporate owned chain that took advantage of customers and ran their store level staff ragged. I eventually quit in disgust and walked away from the industry altogether. I spent two years as a house dad until a small town, three bay shop popped up for sale 10 minutes from my house. I jumped on it and now I'm a one man show, calling my own shots and running the shop as I see fit. I have no idea if it's going to work out long term, but it's a far sight better than working for any of the dealerships or chains in my area.

I am retired from the auto repair industry. My experiance runs from 1968 to 2013. I worked in service, parts and Bodyshop. My first 30 years were spent as a tec. with the last 15 as a fixed operations manager. There was a 5 year period in the early 2000s where I was a manager of a franchised tune up shop. I then went back to turning a wrench for 15 years. Before returning to management. My primary employment was in a small dealership. Fortunately my boss seen the value in training and because I was able to share what I learned I was the go to school guy. Over the course of the years I accumulated over 4000 hours of technical training and a additional 500 hours of management training. In my area the larger dealers did not treat their tec's very well. The smaller dealers seen the value in their people and treated them far better. I made a very good living as a tech. But seen in the later years the frustration and burnout due to lack of current training and poor management.

When it comes to people wanting to Mickey mouse their cars they will always do that but when the company has heavy equipment and or a construction type site it is has to make money when the equipment runs that's where job security is heavy equipment mechanic is way needed right now

They need to move out of the automotive industry and get into the heavy equipment industry and or heavy tracking because that's where the money is add job security caterpillar Volvo komatsu all these dealerships are screaming for mechanics if you're willing to learn they are willing to train and you will make over 100k a year easily I know I did it for 50 years have a nice day

Here in the Midwest, shop owner's swallow their tongues at the idea of paying a wrench $50 an hour. Hard enough to get $25. No wonder young people take a pass on trade schools and years of tool payments.

If the contract for Penndot to construct roads was the best material and installation, half of PA would not have as many crumbling roads. Unfortunately Penndot seems to give to the lowest bidder and therefore, not as good materals or installation that the major roads get re-done every so many years and the ones where lower-middle class drive on become outright dangerous with the severity of potholes that are never spot filled. Also, Penndot has apparently never heard of a sander before. With the road surface slightly warping over time and becoming uneven, you would think Penndot would put down a giant sander that smooths a few millimeters out the surface of the road.

I save thousands of dollars a year on fuel and maintenance in NY. I won't flinch at a $21 per month tax on my Tesla. I thought it was funny when he mentioned EV's competing with ICE cars....LOL! When you finally make the switch, you will understand. There is no competition. Next time you visit a golf course, ask yourself, "Why did I chose this electric golf cart when they also had gas powered ones that I could ride?" Hmmm?

Take away the gas taxes, modify the property taxes for your car to be mileage dependant, and based on weight class. Most of your EVs are going to qualify as Light Trucks based on weight, same with most SUVs. This will also reduce the number of people getting those giant tanks of luxury pickups that they are typically buying purely for status.
