Surely if you buy a new van you would spread the he cost over say a three year period? Also fuel consumption of newer vans will be lower than a 6 year old van , as engine technology evolves

Best person to get advice from in Scotland is Neil @Neptune courier. He’s also on RU-vid. Personally I really struggle getting out of Scotland and have to drop to around 0.60 a mile to be back to England

You can approach a courier company for a full time job and they’ll supply the van, Or you can get your own van and be self employed and subcontract for other companies or websites/apps

In my experience there’s money to made and a lot lost ! There’s always someone who’ll do it cheaper than you sometimes you’ll get 1.50 a mile for a Luton… but that being said you’ll then have to wait for payment 30/45-60 days !
What Mitch said below is spot on, I don’t run solely on the Cx so I can’t give you and weekly figures check out @Saintsman small van driver he does alot on the CX and talks figures.
Once he takes his expenses out, fuel, food , accommodation , insurance, Maintanance and tax. It does take that figure way way lower ! It’s always about the bottom figure

Hi pal, yeh at the moment there seems to be more and more companies not paying drivers and going under then re starting under a new name, leaving drivers out of pocket. Also most companies that do pay have terms of 30Days - 45Days end of month so it can take 2-2.5 months to get paid off companies that do pay. You need a lot of money in the bank to cover your expenses for months before you see any money come back in
Prices on cx have definitely dropped 21 vs 24, you'd be sat at home most of the week quoting those prices on cx. You're right about syndicates, sole driver accounts screenshotting jobs to other uninsured drivers.
I agree about the cx can always get a job out but 9 times out of 10 nothing back normally because when im looking for job back the exchange is swapping over to jobs for the next day
Spent 60k is drop in the sea if your keeping the customers happy ! I've done 350 jobs on the cx this year. Great feedback -tough going sometimes. Need to start posting myself.

I’m considering doing this to finish off my career. I’m 61, ive been a class 1 driver for 40 years. I’ve got the van & it’s paid for, I’ve got a bit of money so I’m not concerned about that. What I am concerned about is the standard of owner drivers that operate in this business, that I would have to compete with, if you have to explain such basic common sense points. The companies that engage these ‘drivers’ must wonder what’s going to turn up at their premises, it seems like a lot of them would be absolutely clueless inexperienced 2 bit cowboys!
Hello Johnathan The old saying I'm an experienced HGV driver and I will run a good courier operation is something that I heard all my life but never proved . This game is about being able to sell and deal with big companies to get the lucrative business in . Good Drivers dont have this experience and they are good drivers with no sales experience . Anybody can drive a van
That’s not what I was trying to say. I’m not attempting to create a courier empire, I’m merely pointing out that if James is having to tell people to keep their van clean & take a bit of food with them, then it makes me wonder how many unscrupulous clowns there are taking work on.
Hi Jonathan, honestly it’s probably a 50/50 split. So many good, honest reliable drivers out there but there’s equally as many cowboys or drivers who have no clue what they’re doing. If your not after making millions and you do everything right it can work just gotta get noticed through the crap drivers
Good morning James, great video and very informative as usual. As you probably know by now i dont, nor have i ever used the CX. Ive worked in this industry, both employed and now self employed for over 30 years, and everything that you day in this video is indeed correct. This industry is a difficult industry to be in. There is lots of competition, and from what others have said, price per mile offered by shippers can be stupidly low. I wont lower my prices just to complete with other carriers, and my regular customers sre fully onboard with that. I totally rely on the fact that i have known my customers for over 25 years, and i have worked for my main customer for nearly 30 years. I also rely on the fact that i guarantee my customers an excellent service, with updates en-route (if they request it) In addition i sm in a very different position to all of you young-uns because i am semi retired, and i only want/need to work 3 or 4 days a week. I do respect you for the hard work and time and effort that you put into your company. Actually it shines out. I did contact you a few weeks ago to tell you that the CX had phoned me completely out of the blue, because they have seen my replies to you regarding the trials snd tribulations that you sometimes have on that platform. They are deffo monitoring you..and me....and probaby others who mention that platform in their videos! Keep up the good work young man. You are a credit to the industry 👍
There is no such thing as a day off when subbing out work! Your day off will be over run with phone calls problems and questions. Holidays I have spent 30 years on beaches sorting out problems . My business no longer needs to give a big income . I shut the business down when I'm on holiday now as I want to enjoy myself . Unless your going to become a multi millionair from the courier game one should consider how much effort they want to put in and if giving up your whole life is worth it . Remember that many of your customers in other industries will be making considerably more money for less effort and time .
