I studied under Ray at the San Francisco Conservatory in the late 60s and he was a great teacher. I was inspired to play guitar in very nearly the same way as he was. I was living in Bowles Hall at UC Berkeley when I heard a Segovia recording being played by a fellow resident. I, like Ray, had never heard guitar played that way and I was hooked. One simple little piece, a Bach prelude, struck me as so sweet and simple that even I (having never touched a guitar) should be able to play it. I went to G. Schirmer, a massive music store near the campus, and was surprised that they actually had the sheet music of the Segovia arrangement of the prelude, and with his fingering! I borrowed a guitar, and with assistance of instructional books, taught myself to play the Bach prelude and Sor etudes that were on the same album. I bought a guitar (Tijuana, gorgeous but green bird's eye maple), began buying recordings by Segovia and others (Bream, Almeida, Diaz, et.al) and spent my time listening and playing instead of going to class leading to my dropping out. After a few years of teaching guitar, I auditioned at SFCM, was accepted and studied with Ray. Unfortunately, I never achieved the level of skill that I wanted, and eventually pursued other things. My guitar (early Jose Oribe grand concert) wouldn't recognize me anymore. I see this is from 16 years ago. I hope Ray is still around, making beautiful music.
Freekin epic !! So nice to hear a real musician playing an epic challenging composition and not all the Disney Grade 5 nursery rhymes that most entitled opinionated classical guitarists play. Just Fantastic. Jerome will stay on my radar.
This is a fantastic video from the documentary The Life of Julian Bream. Amazing music, two geniuses at the top of their games. I wish the full improv without Bream's wonderful remarks were available, anynone knows about it? It should be from the BBC from what he says. It's incredibly frustrating they do not include this as an extra on the documentary DVD. Also, I want to point out it's recorded in Lime Grove Studios in London, not in India, according to Bream's own worlds.
Admirable that our boy wanted to meet AAK. He shows his true inability very well too. I think it's fair to say Bream had a cheek playing with AAK, even more drab than his gig with Grappelli.
