He's animated, extremely expressive and seems very passionate. What a nice and refreshing difference between Dimitri and the boring zombie classical guitarists! This is one of the reasons I and so many others like guitarists like Dimitri Illarionov and Tatyana Ryzhkova. If you like zombies then watch the other classical guitarists.

I dont feel that difficulty is an important factor in music, Mozart showed this in his marvelous improvisations, and just as great athletes, such as Don Drysdale, Olga Korbutt, Wilt Chamberlain made their plays seem easy, smooth, and simple. Guiliani is playing a fine arts game, not a baseball game. His music is still beautiful and enjoyable. I enjoyed this piece immensely, and thats the proof of the pudding.

Giuliani’s work is heard now more than ever. Perhaps the Nocturnal will last centuries, perhaps not. (And “trolling” is what you did. I responded to a negative comment, to defend the composer and performer you diminished.)

1. What does "guitarist composer..." etc., mean? Was Chopin merely a "pianist writing for pianists?" 2. You need to look at more of Giuliani's work -- or get someone to explain it to you-- before you minimize the man's output of hundreds of works, many substantial harmonically and technically. 3. Britten, whom some rate as less than first tier, wrote ONE fine piece for guitar, and it is not necessarily difficult than many of Giulani's works. BTW, great playing on this video.
@editghosttv
@editghosttv 12 лет назад
Offense taken. The only ants here are the trolls who feel the need to pepper RU-vid with snarky little “That piece wasn’t so difficult!” responses to compliments on fine performances.

@editghosttv
@editghosttv 12 лет назад
It was you who compared Giuliani with Britten, as composers. Further, my allusion was to your weak “guitarist writing for guitarists” criticism of Giuliani; Chopin was a great pianist/composer who wrote for pianists. This did not diminish his greatness, any more than a guitarist writing for guitarists diminishes his potential greatness. Moreover, the fact (?) that many pianists are unaware of Giuliani or any composer has no bearing on that composer’s skills and talents as a composer.
@Arkani22
@Arkani22 11 лет назад
You think this is so easy. Maybe you just read some of his sheets and you think you are pro. But there is more to it than that. Good tone. Good technique. Good interpretation. It is hard to achieve all 3. And you say it is easy. Then I don't know how come i never heard of you. I can read all Chopins music totally easy. But I don't know if I could interpret it good. You said you played Rossiniana No. 1 and No. 3. And said easy. But can you interpret it?

He does not respect the dynamic indications Giuliani gives in the score at all.
@DurvalLacerda
@DurvalLacerda 5 лет назад
I was just thinking about that. he isnt a bad player at all, but the way he interprets the song is very different from the original, almost like he is playing something else
@guitaropro
@guitaropro 5 лет назад
@@DurvalLacerda That's what I mean. It seems that he sacrifices all the fine musical ideas Giuliani has to the goal making a "virtuosic" impression in the first place. Some kind of superficial, isn't it?
@DurvalLacerda
@DurvalLacerda 5 лет назад
@@guitaropro Not superficial at all. Its just the way he interprets the song. (I particularly prefer the original) You can argue he adds too much of his own style into the original, but imo he actually makes it better in a few piece like in 4:13 ~ 4:51
@guitaropro
@guitaropro 5 лет назад
@@DurvalLacerda I can't agree with that. Look, the octaves before the theme appears again are written in piano. That is far more tense than his forte in this part. He is not a friend of differentiation at all.
@editghosttv
@editghosttv 12 лет назад
Of course Giuliani’s style is suited to the guitar. So is Chopin’s suited to the piano. How trite is your observation! Both wrote pieces that naysayers label “easier to play than they sound,” but are indicative of a composer’s skill. Your assessment of Giuliani’s “music” is incorrect; I submit that you are not familiar with most of his output.

I am familiar with Giuliani’s entire oeuvre, which you clearly are not; The Grand Overture-despite it’s being over-performed and over-recorded-is not on par with the finest of Giuliani’s compositions, many of which display a solid, if judicious, use of counterpoint.
@LowAMVUpLowDurrrr
@LowAMVUpLowDurrrr 12 лет назад
English speaking or not you are ignorant for even arguing this point.. Giuliani was brilliant as was Chopin. Comparing the two is meaningless. As for Giuliani's music not being difficult, that is not entirely true; Rossiniana No. 1 is extremely difficult.

Problem is you are too arrogant. I asked my friends who played piano and said Chopin is not hard -> They are visiting music school as I do. Not all Guillani songs are hard but I think you just are trying make yourself look badass and all-knowledgeable. But I can guarantee that even some professors can't interpret Giullani properly and you are claiming that you can. Your ego is really big. If you want to convince us that you can interpret and play Giullani with ease give us your video.

Like everything Dimitri does, the performance is overdone, too long in the oven I guess. The sound is atrocious, dunno if it's because he is overdriving the instrument or because the audio equipment is lacking. Or maybe he needs a new guitar? I suspect, were I a guitar, I would quickly tire of Dimitri trying to play me.
