Sounds great! I just bought a Gitane 350 D hole guitar and was going to purchase the K&K Definity pickups to go with it but K&K discontinued that pickup last year :(
There's a lot of resonance with the floating wrist, thats well good. So if you're on electric archtop are ya using a bit more right hand palm muting? Would you carry on using rest stroke or go more alternate picking? Thanks for the bril content, from Devon.
For archtop - depends. You can go either way really. Open strings ringing can be an issue - a lot of the old school players used a string damper. But it is possible. I mean Joe Pass did it!
Great video! As a player using gypsy jazz picking technique,it's what I was looking for! For bebop playing,or simply for playing saxophone, clarinet, etc lines on the guitar,we have to find some tricks. As you say, playing odd number of notes on the same string is hard. A trick I found is sometimes to play big intervals on the same string to keep an even number of notes on it,which implies quite a lot of left hand moving!Another thing is using hammers-ons and pull-offs as you said. Sometimes even taking off a note by playing a dead note instead of one which would have needed to be played with an upstroke on a lower string (awful movement if you use gypsy picking). I feel a number of notes on bebop heads for example are more for rhythmic effect,as you showed on "Moose the Mooche",so taking some off doesn't harm the general feeling, and it keeps swinging. But of course quite often we have to break the rules, for example attacking an upper string with an upstroke. I am glad you said you thought that gypsy picking is a powerful technique for jazz, not just gypsy. Gypsy picking is hard to master, and I don't feel like using a completely different one when playing some bebop stuff,I prefer trying to see what the gypsy technique can allow me to do (it's quite a lot!). Cheers!
Yeah I’ve found GJ picking absolutely fine 95% of the time. There’s a few things where you need to adjust. Otoh I’ve found with more electric guitars you do need to develop a muting technique. You can still use a form of rest stroke picking tho.
Great lesson, wonder why it came up in my feed today? lol... the more years I play (going on 50), the more I have reduced the number of chords in a progression, really, it all comes down to the I and the V chord, or the ultimate distillation to the diminished leading tone. Chords go by so fast, I am trying to play ahead and come up with lines that resolve across the measures and creates a pulse with the harmony... still trying after 50 years....
Django did not follow any rules on how to pick he played what he thought was right and he always was it was gypsy guitarists who followed in his giant footsteps who laid down the rules. if Django had copied other guitarists you would not have heard of him
Wow that K&K sounds really good! I may just use that on my Danelectro Convertible!! How much heavy lifting is that LR Baggs pre doing? I have an old Fishman aura kicking around...
Great video! I appreciate your tips on helping me improve my skills. I feel I have a more enriched understanding of my musicianship In all genres. Thank you.
Greek bouzouki players and Turkish Laouto also using that particular technique, I believe sweep picking is a better technique, cuz even you the master of guitar have problems with Gypsy jazz right hand technique , and in the same moment your sweep picking has no problems at all when you played arpeggios 😉
All techniques have their challenges. You can learn sweep picking in an afternoon but it takes much longer to get it in time, for example. I think Frank Gambale said something to that effect…. Sweep picking itself is a natural extension of gypsy picking with one catch - it only goes in one direction….
Brilliant lesson.... Delightful and hugely informative... Just what I needed on my bop quest.. Respect and thanks. Ps I have a Zoller pickup as well on my Epiphone H Roberts archtop... Very cool sounds to be sure. Gday from Auckland
Why can we do Down up down, up down up , up down up , from high notes ? And has to be Down up down, down up down ? We are losing time with that Down stroke
Audiotechnica pro 70 is fantastic for this . I also have a Krivo djangobucker as well which is also killer for electric sound . I avoid piezo like the plague
The latest thing for me is the Tonedexter (see the most recent video on their channel); which is an improvement on ‘naked’ piezo, but not a magic bullet. The Krivo is nice, I use the micro Manouche.
That's fun idea, nice job. You'll get in the groove of this meter much easier if you're counting 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2. One of the most famous examples is Macedonian song Jovano, Jovanke.
Hi there, I have a similar guitar (for my budget), a Greco N60. What strings would you recommend for the swing style? Proper carved acoustic archtops are a bit hard to come by in my country. Thanks. Great lesson by the way!
Difficult to follow. A bit awkward presentation. Firstly calm down. You don't have to play so fast because this is a tutorial. No shame in playing a bit slower. Quite a few times it goes wrong.
I was a baby RU-vidr back then. Now I make all different kind of mistakes lol. Weird thing is these early videos are the ones that took off.... in my defence I would say it’s kind of the point to practice it fast, but yeah valid criticism for sure.
this is great! i've just learned bistro fada & bought a gypsy jazz guitar. now i'm going to practice bistr slower and concentrate on my picking and phrasing. thank you
