An in depth and hopefully sometimes humorous looks at the golden days of the Sega 8 and 16 bit consoles. The goal is to review 1,200+ Master System/Genesis/Sega CD/32X Games that compromise the US/European/Brazilian Libraries, and maybe even a few Japanese releases as well. Hopefully RU-vid is still around in 20 years, after World War III, because it's probably going to take that long to get this done...
Although I am late to the party (video), Elgato is propper poooooop when using their software. Using OBS, in my case, every time I loose synch on bootup of a console when it switches modes with TBC-sync mode even, there is a chance the audio gets broken. It is not on my headphones or discord but on the capture when making longplays. I am not sure if it is just OBS and I should use the other program or something else but OBS supports all resolutions although it does not know what aspect ratios are for high end VGA CRTs and treats them as unfilllable via ctrl+f
I never had major issues with Elgato, but I also wasn't doing more intensive stuff like OBS. However, having said that, I have zero regrets with switching to Avermedia. The software just WORKS.
This was a great game when it came out, and World Series Baseball was the best 16 bit baseball game, my friends and I had huge tournaments with that game!
I had no idea Sports Talk was practically a sequel to Tommy Lasorda! I came here to support Tommy, like that 2 pound heavy duty Sega Genesis game case did for those stat cards.
I'm sure there's some joke here I'm not getting, because I literally have never played the next game scheduled. My copy is still technically sealed (not sure if original or not), so I'll be opening it up for the first time before playing it.
Weirdly generic game & not just the name. Wonder if this was supposed to be something else, like they didnt get the rights to game based on a movie/arcade game. Or maybe just had the spare game engine ready & just decided to put it out as something. You quite often hear developers tell about working on a game, but then their boss runs in having secured a license to something & then demand that the devs turn their half finished game into the new license before christmas etc.
That would make sense if it started out life as something else. Might explain why the story is so goofy, if they had to pivot to something else other than what was originally planned.
Very interesting to know France imported Growl from NA and sold it with a translated manual and translated stickers on the cover. Portugal also has some Genesis games, with Portuguese manual and cover and with the original Genesis manual and cart sticker, imported by Ecofilmes. If I'm not mistaken, at least NBA Jam and Judge Dredd Genesis versions got sold in Portugal, but there is also an oficial PAL release for those games, so I don't know why they brought the NA version to Portugal, maybe it was cheaper to import than the PAL version. Also, Dragon Ball Z got imported from Japan (and then from France, after France translated the game to french) by Ecofilmes. Glade you survived the storm :S
Thank you! And yeah, I'm sure there's all sorts of weird one offs, and it's always fun to hear personal stories like that, because otherwise, I'd have no idea. As far as NBA Jam and Judge Dredd goes, I'm assuming there must have been some sort of licensing deal with Acclaim that allowed them to do it, and those titles were viewed as big enough to merit special releases. But you're right, the question of why NTSC vs PAL at that point is a bit confusing, unless it was just that the NTSC version was ready first, and it simply came down to logistics.
@@ZilogandMoto Yeah. Or maybe there weren't enough PAL copies and they had to go to NA to bring some of those here. Forgot to say, for Dragon Ball Z from Japan, Ecofilmes also included an adapter cart with the game, otherwise it wouldn't fit in our consoles. Dragon Ball really was a big thing here.
Oh, right, I forgot about that. Those would be nice to have, then could just use them for any Japanese title. It's either that or cut the cartridge slot to fit, it works, but it's a little messy.
so this is what i’ve been meaning to say all year, now that i’ve caught up 100% on your upload library and have the full perspective. i love your year-end videos, but it would be so much better - either in that video or as a second, separate year-end video - if you provided stats and even some fun graph breakdowns of ⓵ where you’re at on the review project. how many games down, how many left to go? percentage complete? etc ⓶ where you’re at on the collection. how many do you have for each console? how many are left to go? what are the percentages? how much of a difference did your collecting make that year? how does your progress compare to previous years? what were this year’s acquisitions (and maybe even what did you pay), at least some key titles but maybe everything? what new homebrew games came out for these systems this year that you now consider part of the target collection? people LOVE stats and feeling like they’re part of your journey to get to 1200 or whatever it is by now, both in reviewing and in collecting. they love to feel like they’re leveling up with you and helping you get there. (for this reason, giving at least an informal stat update for how much closer you’ve gotten at the end of each shopping/hunting video you do would be awesome as well...like okay, small haul, that’s only 0.3% of a difference, or big haul, wow, we got 1.6% closer in just one weekend of shopping…etc etc.) i think this shift in presentation/focus (for at least one or two standout videos per year, but also maybe mentioning each week “today we’re reviewing our 27th sega CD game to date, sonic CD”) would be key in promoting the channel, getting your current viewer base even more engaged and invested in spreading the word, and even motivating people to help you get to 100% by donating certain games or at least reaching out to sell (perhaps at friendly rates etc). would also be key for eventually motivating people to pledge to a patreon or whatnot. i know that even if you like the idea 2025 would be the first year you could really do it right, but even a tentative move in this direction for your december video(s) would be really cool to see this year. make this show a part of our holiday season ritual! it could be so cool 🤩
Thanks for the lengthy response. I had thought about mentioning some of those statistics in the yearly wrap up video previously, so I'll see what I can do about working some of that stuff in this year. All good suggestions. As always, the limiting factor in how I do any of this is time, so if I have extra time, and can figure out a way to add some of that stuff without it seeming hacky, I'll definitely see what I can do.
@@ZilogandMoto well, you probably know the numerator and denominator for most of it, so it could be as simple as just running the division in a calculator and mentioning it for a few moments in your yearly wrap up video anyway. in terms of eventually making it more robust and fun, you might just need a dedicated fan-assistant 😆 i’m in X-tremely poor health so i’m not sure how much i can do but if there’s a way i can help with it i’d gladly try. don’t mean to sound pushy though, just was meaning to share the intense zilog data craving i developed after watching all the previous episodes and annual reviews 🧟♂️
No, those are definitely good ideas, and I like I said, I'd thought about adding in some of those statistics before. Will see what I can do this year, hopefully not too rushed by the holidays.
I love the arcade version, but this one's a bit too watered down for me. A bigger cart would have helped, but I can't help suspect that system limitations would always have compromised it no matter the size. I wouldn't mind picking it up, but the price is a little steep. Hell, the Japanese version's more expensive than picking up the arcade board.
The music and sfx came across a lot better than the graphics, for sure. Would have been better with a bigger cart, but then again, SOR was only a 4 Mbit cart, too.
Cool game. I borrowed it back in the day from someone at my secondary school. Liked it. Strange that it didn't get a PAL release. Funny game too. Are you mistreating animals? Say hello to my rocket launcher!!! I would go for the pronunciation to sounds more Japanese, not your Tay-to. But it doesn't matter much.
@@ZilogandMoto there were some Genesis games to be found here and there. Even my video rental place had about ten of them. I don't think Growl was the French version, but I can't be sure, it has been almost thirty years...
@@ZilogandMoto UK here. I can't speak for anywhere else, but we had stores that sold imports, and random Genesis titles would show up in second hand stores too. I had the US release of Syndicate, for example.

I love that the hero throws the grenade and then takes "cover" by pretty much laying his own face right on top of the grenade. Who knew duck and cover was so effective?

You should link your MIA games list in your descriptions. It a longshot but you never know when someone has a game lying around that they just don't care about and can't be bothered to put up on ebay and might want to donate.
If the hand to hand combat was just a touch cleaner, I probably would have bumped it to 3 stars, even with it only being 1 player. But it's just hard when SOR controls so cleanly in comparison.
Im playing through this game this week and its really fun 😁 and a challenge i had trouble at first swinging to the next block with the extendo hand but i have it down now it took practice
Regarding sound, simulation games of the time rarely used it in missions, to increase immersion and realism and all that. Even modern simulators don't use ambient music.
That makes sense. And honestly, when rating it, I don't think I really factored that into the score that much, it would have been mainly issues with the graphics and the gameplay.
Great vid! I feel your pain on this; this is one of two times I remember running a game right back to Blockbuster mere hours after renting it; the other being Super Thunder Blade. If only they had taken the time to check all of the Ps and Qs, this could have been ...okay? Not a classic or even memorable, but at least in the area of "Could have been better" instead of the trainwreck it is.
Yeah, I don't think there's a world in which this game is good, probably the closest to that would be the Amiga version. But...damn...have some self respect about what you're releasing.
Great game and amazing review! This game is one of my favorites in SMS, but as a brazillian, here we got a modified version with brazillian comics characters in place of the beast forms and a diferent sprite for last boss. Just my 2 cents helping a little: the lizard-man also has some unique abilities, he's the only one imune to lava (the other ones need the Dragon scale mail) and he's also the only one capable to crouch.
I tried this game on an emulator as a kid for a few minutes, did not like it at all. It's one of those games that left a really boring impression on my memory. Future me should tell past me about your channel, so that I could start watching you sooner.
22:33 well... thanks for the warning, but it is 30 years too late. 🤣 Imagine finding out that the game you bought had only 4 levels and legitimately, on your own, you can only beat the first and the last one. This and Traveler's Tales' Disney licensed -tech- -demos- product made me hate "variety" in video games.

Dang dude. You're pretty good at level 1. And I don't think the color problem was shadow mode. I think they got the bit order on the color bytes wrong, causing some of the info to be thrown away.
@@ZilogandMoto The Sega Retro page has a Bugs subpage that describes the problem in a bit more detail and a Comparisons subpage that shows how it's supposed to look (from a patched ROM).
Too bad the developers didn’t just copy the Train and Horse riding gameplay from “Express Raider” for this game it would have been way better if they did. Also they could have plagiarized the shooting gallery level from a level in Lethal Enforcers 2. Maybe steal a gameplay design cue from Dick Tracy for the pie throwing level. Anyway what the hell do I know
And now remember that the game came out around the same time as Sunset Riders (Arcade version) which did the horse riding, train level and shooting gallery (the bonus stage) a hell of a lot better and more competent as well.
God as a big bttf fan, i rented this from blockbuter snd was disappointed on how hard it was. I couldnt even pass that first level ss a kid. Only took emulation and loads of save states to pass this short game
I had Tecmo Bowl and then Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES. Loved them both and still do to this day. Of course when I got a Genesis and saw this game at the rental store I rented it and loved it as well. Ended up getting it as a Christmas or birthday gift.. It's similar to the NES version and not quite as good in my opinion but at the time just having the updated rosters was enough for me. Really enjoy the video!
