Ya. I’m not finding much of a difference in my experience or online. As long as your overall wheel plus tire diameter stays the same the change won’t affect mpg. However, the weight change between 17 and 19 could affect it a little. Also, the type of wheels could change aerodynamics. From what I can find, the overall effect is pretty minimal. 1 to 3 mpg tops.
The biggest thing is change the oil with full synthetic motor oil every 5,000 miles. Plus or minus a few hundred miles isn’t a big deal but it needs to be consistent. Second is to replace things as they go out. Don’t wait until 5 things are wrong with it or it will be overwhelming in cost and you’ll feel like your car is a piece of crap. 😄
😂 I’ve had leather seats for 7 years and I love them. I also have heated seats so the cold isn’t a problem. I also park in a garage so they don’t get hot. If something spills on them I just wipe them off. No scrubbing trying to get stains out. Haven’t had any maintenance on these to speak of. But I can see how they wouldn’t be enjoyable if I parked outside in the heat and didn’t have heated seats in the cold. They may not be for everyone. I’m still learning, my…um…opposite of grasshopper. 😀
Interesting. My 2014 M6 has no button on the trunk to open it at all. It always baffled me. If my interior release button malfunctions and trunk open button on the key fob goes out, there are simply zero ways left to open the trunk. You cant let the back seats down to get in that way and pull the emergency open thingy, because the levers to drop the seats are inside the trunk.
This is nice to see. I have the exact same model year (Touring) that I’ve had for 9 years. About to hit 80k miles and virtually no problems whatsoever. Every now and then I consider trading it in but the car is still so much fun to drive that I can’t bear to part with it.
I almost sold mine back in 2019. Would have had about 120,000 miles on it then. I was laid off at that time. That’s the only reason I was selling it. It was killing me to sell it and I’m so glad it didn’t sell. It’s been an awesome car.
I can see the appeal and I can see opportunities where I would enjoy a self driving car. But, I love the driving experience so much that I’m not sure it would be something I would want to use often enough to make it worth it for me.
Wow you know I had to go try this out before I commented. Worked like a charm both way! This has always been so frustrating to me when I needed to turn the car off while on the phone. Thank you a thousand times over for sharing this information. Happy Memorial Day!
383,000 miles! Engine and transmission still running great. Only major expenses I’ve had with the car are the fuel pumps mentioned in the video and front suspension work. Front control arms were replaced in November 2023. Just over $1,000. Front Ball Joints and Bushings are going out but don’t have to be replaced yet. I’ve had to replace the rotors twice since buying the car. I upgraded to a more expensive rotor at around 250,000 miles and haven’t had to replace them since. Everything else was routine expenses. I’m going to do another video at 400,000 miles going over everything I’ve had to replace on it.
@@TheEpling seeing your video of you touring the car and even reading this comment of yours literally brings a smile to my face. So fantastic to see a car reach this kind of mileage. Thanks for the update. Can I ask: why is it that you do so much driving, for work?
I have 20 inch on my Impala and a pothole just took out a side wall on one of my tires. I am thinking about going 18 inch now thinking they would be less likely to fail.
@@TheEpling The rim wasn’t damaged but a new tire with alignment ran $450. Pot holes in my area are the norm. Hard Winters with generous amount of salt to melt ice.
bought a mazda 6 2017, but it wasnt well taken care of and had started to rust everywhere so i picked up a new Mazda 3 -24, i regret it 100% and looking for a well taken care of Mazda 6 again :) New interior and infotainment isnt as good as the old one and here in europe we have alot of EU mandatory systems from 2020 and onwards that makes the driving very annoying so 2019 and prior with android auto and heated steering wheel and bose audio system is what im looking for as an estate.
I serviced my transmission, the oil was black and getting thick. Had metal shavings on the magnet of the pan too. It's a 2018 with 138k km. After changing the oil and filter it shifted a bit smoother, not a major difference tho. I'm the 2nd owner.
Yup! I saved a ton. My Mazda6 was $36,000 brand new. Prices have only gone up. Supposing I’d bought the car brand new and I had replaced my car every 100,000 miles I’d be on my 4th car. That’s $144,000 dollars. If I’d replaced it every 200,000 miles I’d be on my 2nd car (almost 3rd). That’s $72,000 (soon to be $108,000). I actually paid $21,000 for the car so If I’d replaced it at 200,000 miles for another $21,000 car I’d be at $42,000 (soon to be $63,000). I’d say in every scenario that $10,000 in repairs really paid off. 😀
I found that holding down on the start button for about 1 sec without your foot on the break works. Do the same to turn it off... Just got my CX-30 yesterday and great experience so far!
Thanks! Must be a new model Mazda thing, though. Doesn’t work on mine. With the car off and without the brake pushed in, one button push (long or short) turns accessories on. Another push turns everything else on. Another push turns the car off. With the car on (brake or no brake), one push (long or short) turns the car off. Only works on mine with the shift button pushed or the car in neutral.
I called the dealership and they didn’t know. 😄 I found this on a Mazda forum. This was one user’s experience. forum.miata.net/vb/archive/index.php/t-598103.html “If I do the following... I have 3 seconds of no sound, but Pandora kept streaming over bluetooth. “Put it in neutral Take foot off clutch Hit power button 3 times within 1 second.[So press it 3 times quickly.] “To turn off the system I had to hit the start button twice (as normal).” With my automatic, if I push the button quickly 1, 2, or 3 times it doesn’t matter. It still turns off the car and goes to accessories mode. So the 3 times is definitely only a manual thing. Then if I press the button again it turns everything else on. Press one more time turns the car off. Maybe experiment with pressing it 2 times quickly and 3 times quickly. Let me know if that works.
Thank you for a great video. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Your GT is a turbo correct? I have a 2021 GT which I bought at 5k miles. I absolutely love it. So far at 35k miles though, I've had to replace the front brakes (pads and rotors), renew the brake fluid, and, have the front control arm replaced because of leaking front ball joints on both sides. The latter was under warranty so I only had to pay for the alignment. As a lifelong Camry person, this is more maintenance than I am used to at this mileage. How does this compare with your experience?
Mine is not a turbo. I now have 382,000 miles on it. I’ve replaced the rotors a few times but I upgraded to a better rotor and haven’t replaced them for probably 150,000 miles now. I think the Radar Cruise Control causes the brakes to go out too fast. It brakes when normally I would just let off the gas to slow down. Brake fluid has been fine for me. I didn’t have to do any suspension work until around 280,000 miles. Replaced the shocks and struts at that time but didn’t need it. Mechanic misdiagnosed the problem, which was control arms, ball joints, and bushings. Replaced the front control arms at about 330,000 miles. The ball joints and bushings need to be replaced but I haven’t done it yet. So your experience is unusual from my own experience and the experience I’ve heard from the vast majority of Mazda owners. I love Corollas and Camrys. My Corolla had 430,000 miles on it when the timing chain went out. Then I got a 2006 Mazda6 because it was after Cash For Clunkers and Corollas were an insane amount of money. I fell in love with Mazda after that because mine was way cheaper than Toyota and super reliable. My 2016 has been very reliable. Everything has lasted a long time for me (except the rotors until I upgraded them). Hopefully you’ll have a better experience from here on out. Maybe you’ll have some things go out and once they are fixed under warranty they won’t be a problem anymore. 🤞
@@TheEpling thank you for the detailed reply, I appreciate it. I hope so too and I love this car. The only question for me has been whether it'll be as reliable as a Toyota. The dealership that services my car told me the ball joints are a common problem at relatively low mileage for the CX models. They said they don't see it with the 6 as much. I didn't mind changing the brake fluid too much because this is around the time the manual recommends to change it and it was starting to change color. I'm surprised you've never had to do it! Anyway, it's been very encouraging to see your Mazda has lasted this long and is still in great condition. May you enjoy it for many more miles 🙂! Thanks again for the video and your response!
It’s possible that my mechanic replaced the brake fluid when replacing the brakes and rotors. I just don’t remember discussing that but the more I think of it the more I’m convinced that it’s likely they did replace it. You’re welcome for the response. I’m happy to help. Good luck with your car!
Thanks for the great report. Oddly, neither Edmunds reviews or Wikipedia fail to mention whether this is the DI engine or not. I finally figured out in one of your subsequent presentations that your M6 GT came equipped with the 2.5L Skyactive engine. With your long journey with this car have you inspected and/or cleaned the intake valves? Thanks in advance.
The only thing I’ve done with that is some engine cleaner additive that was used around 200,000 miles. Other than that, I haven’t done anything. I don’t recall exactly what was used. It wasn’t out of necessity that it was added. It was just a suggestion from my mechanic.
@@TheEpling Thanks for your reply. So, as I understand it, you do not know if your mechanic removed the intake manifold to administer this intake valve cleaning. Do you recall if the PVC valve was ever replaced? From what I understand that requires the the intake manifold be removed for access, and often times said cleaning is performed at that time. The 2.5 Skyactiv G, comes in several cars of interest for an upcoming purchase. Vehicle will probably have over 100K mi, and not have been ran on Mobil 1. So in a nutshell, I'm trying to figure-in a timeline for scheduled pre-emptive services.
@@H-habilisI do not recall it ever being replaced. I don’t even recall having ever been advised to replace the PCV Valve. I think I’d remember that one but it is possible I could be mistaken. I’m 95% sure.
Regarding the usb charging. I also have a 2016 model and I have bought the carplay upgrade from the dealer, which became available as an option around 2019. They change the charging port to one that is carplay compatible and this also has higher speed charging, somit has solved the issue for me. Cost was about €250.
Hello Neighbor (judging from your license plate we are located pretty close to each other)! I had a 2016 Mazda6 Grand Touring as well with 100k miles. ONLY routine maintenance on that fine piece of machinery until an F150 ran a red a totaled her. Another great thing to mention is Mazda has exceptionally high safety ratings!
Hello there! Noo!! That’s awful. I would experience emotional damage if that happened to my car. It’s my second home. Right! I did not mention the safety ratings. They are great cars.
Yup. There’s a big difference. Sometimes that extra $300 or so that it costs to buy the 19” tires vs the 17” tires just kills your bank account balance. It’s painful.
great hack! adaptive cruise control slowed the car down many times unnecessarily on the highway, so that's a nice trick. Meanwhile: 381 K miles <3 going strong!
@@TheEpling 116 K miles and still going strong. meanwhile trying to find out if Skyactiv engine needs high octane fuel or not. many US reviewers claim that regular is ok. others across the world only recommend premium or higher. kind of confusing.
That’s interesting. I’ve only ever used Regular. It doesn’t call for High Octane anywhere on the car. I wonder if the engines are different outside the US.??
This is great to see. I bought a 2018 Mazda 6 Sport new, it's been a really enjoyable car. I only have 29K miles on it, the only work I've had done was a fuel system software update (free under warranty). It looks like I"ll be able to keep a long long time, from the looks of this video. That's good because it's a 6-speed manual and I don't think I"ll be able to find a car with a stick any time in the future.
Beautiful car! And holy cow that's a lot of miles! I have a 2016 Mazda3 Sport and it's only at 100k, I hope it can make it at least double that, it's on its 2nd transmission 😬
@@TheEpling I was a bit shocked when my dealer told me that too! I was starting to have a delay going into gear after the car would sit for a few hours, and really wonky shifting - 1-2, 2-3, 4-5, and 5-4 would often 'jerk', sometimes pretty aggressively - even after a fluid change and getting my TCM reflashed at the dealer it was still doing it. It seemed to be getting worse with mileage too (bought at 75k), so it had me very concerned. The new transmission is still a bit clunky when shifting and moving on and off the throttle, but much better than the old one so I've just chalked it up to being how Mazdas drive. 🤷♂ Otherwise I love the car and have had no issues other than my rain-sensing wipers not working and a clicking CV axle lol but I expect this kind of stuff at 100k.
Wow. That’s a rough start for you. I wonder if the previous owner didn’t take care of it. I’ve got a 2006 Mazda6 that I bought at 70,000 miles. Transmission went out about 10,000 miles later. Previous owner must have been hard on it because it now has almost 300,000 miles on it and it runs great. Hopefully yours does the same for you.
@@TheEpling That's what I'm assuming. It had a full carfax of service done at the dealer up until I bought it. Thought it would be fine. Guess not I did my research on these cars before buying and saw only great things about the Skyactiv drivetrains, so I still have faith in the little 3. Everything else has been just fine so far. Definitely interested to see just how far yours will go!
I wanted to update.. it didn't work for me. I have the updated 2017 steering wheel with the silver ring around the airbag, with a mode button that changes between limit and cruise and it is also used for activation. So for who have your type of steering wheel it will work for them@@TheEpling
What happens when you push Mode? Does it give you the symbol with the car and arrow pointing at a speedometer or just the arrow pointing at a speedometer? Or does it do something else entirely?
Hi, I tried long pressing all the cruise control/limit buttons it just changes between those modes. The logo I have is with the arrow and the car, I also looked in the settings of the safety and the vehicle in the infotainment screen and there is no such option of adaptive / normal
I’ve recently got my Mazda 6 2017 but sadly I could only get the sport and not the touring but that’s the one I originally wanted but I’m still quite happy and thankful I was able to get my car in general
The Mazda6 is a great car in general. The Sport trim is just missing some features that the Touring has. I’m sure it’s still really fun to drive. And still a beautiful car.
Thank you! I’ve also learned since making this video that if I turn the engine off while holding the button on the shifter down then the accessories will stay on. I’m a little slow. 😄
Great video! I'm currently have Ford Focus 3 with Powershift transmission which is nightmare. And I was thinking to sold it and buy another car and I'm looking closely to Mazda 3/6. 350k miles is impressive and overall I always liked Mazda. This video brings me more to getting one xD What about transmission by the way? How does it feel on bumpy road, is it "soft" transmission or something more sporty? Because I am looking for a car where there won't be sport transmission, I want a smooth ride. Thank you for the video once again!
From what I understand of the Powershift transmission, just about anything you drive will shift more smoothly than that. 😄 Mazda has a great transmission. It’s smooth. I’ve loved it. Mazda is all about the driving experience. They want their owners to love being in a Mazda. Everyone I know who drives a Mazda loves it. I’m sure there are people who don’t but I haven’t met them. Good luck on your decision!
So, I called my mechanic. Apparently I’ve only changed my spark plugs once. July 2022 at 285,000 miles. And that’s the only time I can remember doing it.
I have a 2016 M6 touring and the only thing I hate about the car is the 19” wheels. I have done a similar analysis and wish I downgraded to the 17” wheels sooner. I however hate the way the 19”s look 😅. Great video!
You’re literally SO on point with the usb charging port and how LOW on power it actually is. I have a 2017 Mazda 6 GT and I’ve once had my phone plugged into the usb charging port (15% before drive) for a whole 1hr 27min drive, leaving my phone at a whopping 17% (2% increase) after the drive. Literally the worst, lowest amped port I’ve EVER used in a car. All in all, I love everything else with the Mazda but that is definitely one dealbreaker of mines.
Ya. It’s so bad. 😄 I keep a portable charger in my car just in case my phone dies because the car will take forever to charge the battery enough to turn the phone back on.
Seems to be a common story about this gen Mazda 6, great, durable, every day commuters. Your scenario I think is exactly why they've gone to claim no maintenance required/lifetime fluid. While I plan on doing a drain/refill every 30k miles, it does introduce risk every time you crank into it. If having someone else service, you'd always wonder if they used the right fluid, did they knock some crud in there, is the level correct (there seems to be a lot of confusion on how to properly check).
