My name is Vernon Smith and I started collecting records back in 1988, when I was a 14 year old punk rock skater boy. I continued to do so until 2005 when, being from New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina came and wiped out all my albums. When that happened, I said to myself: "Vernon Smith, you can't rebuild your record collection at age 30, that would be ridiculous!" Well here I am at age 48, rebuilding my record collection. Ridiculous, right gang?!
Join me every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday as I go through the albums I've re-collected so far and tell wild and zany stories that center around those bands and albums. I'll discuss why they're vital (Vityl, get it?! GET IT?!) to my new collection and even talk a little about the New Orleans punk rock scene of the 1990's. Crack open a bottle of Fruitopia, heat up some Bagel-Bites, and get ready to...♫ solve a mystery, or rewrite history, duck tales, woo-hoo ♫...well, maybe not that last part. Sorry.
I had that same model that i purchased from Pony's in Japan... Loved that receiver... Until my mom sold it in a garage sale for 75 bucks... I was furious...There was nothing wrong with it... Let me know if you're interested in selling it...
@@garyjones2582 Oh man that sucks, sorry she sold it! Not sure if you’re near New Orleans but there is a similar receiver listed on Marketplace (Sansui Seven) for around $500
Most realistic products are collectable , I own a few pairs of Minimus 7 speakers they all work awesome for a small enclosure mostly to compete with Bose and other small speaker's.
I own this model ...1971 an epic year in technology at the time , these were the transistor design s that sound like tubes and the reason the AUX is only lit is probably because of rf that comes from the lights and disconnects the line to the tuner which can bleed in if this weren't done this way , It's a killer amp when restored by recapping the unit with high end capacitor s like Mundorf MLytic filter capacitors and Duelund coupling + Audio Note and Elna Cerophyn s ...my Sansui Receiver model 7000 is a Dragon Slayer now
Oh and when you put LED's in it, consider moving the lighting feed wire to the source voltage so the dial never turns off. You have to enjoy that face!
@@renderingrocksI have no idea how to move the lighting feed wire to the source wire. I wish I did so I could keep the face lit up all the time. As for why my buddy had it apart, I think it was just because one of the channels was cutting out. I’m guessing it’s because the selector switch needs to be cleaned (which I’ll do when I open it up to install the LED’s), I just plugged in to B Speakers and everything sounds great!
That's a shame you're running out of content ol' buddy, but I understand. The background in your videos have changed immensely since You started, so it all hasn't been for nothing! 😄 And your sense of humor is pretty in line with mine, so I've really enjoyed your videos...weather I'm into what you're talking about or not! I don't know shit about "Sansui" but I know the Skylabs guy loves'em! 👍🏻
Thanks! I still have a few more left to make, maybe I’ll do something afterwards, who knows? Yeah I didn’t know anything about Sansui either before getting this one, but now I get it!
@TheVintageNewbie I've been looking for a vintage receiver I remember my mom's Kenwood from when I was a kid sounded so good. But ya I'm a pioneer guy. I'm still researching thanks for the video.
@@jasondessin8962 if you’re on Facebook there’s a group called Vintage Stereo & Hi-Fi Equipment that’s pretty active and has a lot of knowledgeable members. I’ve learned a lot from the folks there. A couple of years ago I knew absolutely nothing about this stuff. Now I can actually fix some stuff!
Awesome, I’m glad you liked it and thought it was funny too! Good luck on changing yours, it wasn’t too hard from what I recall, just be careful with the bulb clips
Fuckin' Jay & silent Bob...cool! 😄 Man that's awesome you're learning to repair that stuff. Maybe one day if you get good enough at it, I can send ya some shit to repair if ever the need arises. 😅
Haha yep I’m the king of minimal beginner’s repairs! Oh and I saw a comment where you talked about Realistic changing to Optimus but when I went back later to respond, it was gone! Did Yutoobs delete it?
I'm a newb also, only been in the hobby for a few months now. I started just with the old stuff I'd accumulated many years ago, one of which is a Pioneer SX-434 given to me in 1979 when I was 14. (The other two are vacuum tube console stereos.) It's only been in these recent months that I've learned that this is an entry level model with just 15 Watts per channel. Never knew that, never cared, still don't. I've always loved it, it sounds good, and plenty loud. It came with 2-way speakers to match, rated at 40W max. I rarely turn the volume knob past 1/4 of its travel. So I know that Wpc doesn't necessarily track with sound quality, and in some cases all those extra Watts can get in the way of good wound quality. So I'm perfectly happy buying several lower powered units of other brands to see what they sound like, all for less than buying a single "monster" unit. I'd recently bought a Harman/Kardon 330B (20 Wpc, my most powerful so far, LOL!) and just love listening to it. I'd like to try a Sansui, and maybe a couple others too. Maybe add a subwoofer to try.
I’ve never heard it but I’ve seen a couple of SX-434’s and they look super cool! I’ve also heard nice things about it. I’ve seen a few pop up on Marketplace for around $100-150 but they’ve all been a few hours away and by the time I was able to take a road trip they had all been sold. I don’t crank my volume up too much either, this set up is in my office/art studio that’s like a 10x12 foot room. It’s usually turned up to 2 or 3 unless I’m in another room and want to listen, then u might turn it wayyyyyy up to 4 haha
Thanks! Yeah I had to set the mic kinda far away since I was holding the camera with one hand and using my other hand for the turntable. Got a taller tripod now so hopefully I won’t need to hold it for these kinda shots
I used to do that shit too dude, (make tapes & listen to them in the car) all the time! 😁🤘🏻And yeah, I remember your "old" channel. 🤣 Also, you can NEVER do enough turntable reviews either! And it's hard hearing you bro...you may need a mic.
Yeah I have an acrylic platter mat on my Audio Technica LP60X & I have a leather one for my U-Turn turntable. Plus, I have that Zerostat gun thingy & believe it or not, that friggin thing actually works awesomely for getting rid of static! That Realistic turntable looks great btw! 👍🏻
Damn, that’s a lot! Do you live in a dryer? Lol. It’s weird though, I’ve never had this issue with any other turntable and I don’t notice it when playing records but when I take them off it really sounds like staticky clothes being pulled apart. I’ve heard leather or cork might help too but I don’t wanna keep buying shit for nothing. Thanks! I’m glad I was able to fix all the other little issues it had going on, I’d been wanting a Realistic table for a while but kept missing out on them when they’d pop up.
Yeah I’m guessing that’s what the previous owner used these for. But they work pretty well as 2 channel stereo speakers so that’s what I’m doing. I don’t really watch much tv
@@TheVintageNewbie I have never used them as main speakers but I do have a pair of Northridge E30s I use with a vintage Fisher receiver from the 80s for my bedroom system. The e thirty's have a slightly different Tweeter and are bi ampable. The studio series stuff from back then is real good quality for the price and you can find a lot of them Out There on The Used market.
Hey bud, long time no see. JBL I've heard are pretty decent speakers. BTW ol' buddy you were "kinda" right. I DID upgrade a couple more things on my stereo. I have a set of "Ultimate Worlds Best Cables" (9 guage) & 2 Douk Audio VU22's for my main stereo & the Douk Audio H7 pro for my desktop. Glad you're back...again! 🤣👍🏻🤘🏻👏🏼👏🏼
Glad to be back again and again lol. Yeah the stereo rabbit hole is real! I think I’m finally done with getting stereo gear. Well, lemme go check Marketplace first, BRB haha
Hi Ty for this.i need help on a similar unit (a2500) that 2 wires were disconnected when i opened this beast :) . Anyway, the blue cable and thin red wire that comes out of the power "transductutor" you labeled it. Lol. Anyway, what does the other end of the blue cable (red, white) and think red wire connect to? I appreciate any reply pls. Ty. John.
Social media and nostalgia revisionist history has elevated these speakers much higher than they are in reality. And so many speakers that can be found thrifting that are so much better than these. Yes, I know about subs, and yes, I know about “mods”. These truly are terrible speakers.
The clocks go bad on these....there's a transistor on the clock PCB that goes bad on these. Its marked 1702M or something like that....cant remember for sure.....it's near the clock IC chip and by the 4 diode bridge rectifier. I have this same model. The transistor goes bad cuz it starts running hot. I think theres a big 1/2 watt resistor right next to it that causes the problems by it going bad 1st? *You'll see under the transistor the board gets all dark from the heat* Theres a big electrolytic capacitor right next to it too
I don’t know the size, sorry. But I ordered it from West Coast Belts and the one they sent was the right size. It MIGHT be a 12-inch belt (I have an old belt but I’m not sure which 8-track player it came from). Do you know if there’s a way to adjust the pitch on this deck? Mine is playing a little slow.
@@TheVintageNewbie Not that I have found yet. Most times on many decks I have restored, slow speed is more from how the tape transport is holding the tape to the capstan. This was a big issue with many 8 track decks. Also if a belt is just a hair to loose it can slip as well and cause the speed issue. I also have found that many belts are loose even when they are supposed to be the correct size. I just hate doing the work to measure it! Lazy! LOL I guess I will do that for this deck though as it does appear to be a nice, and well built unit.
Nope. Just looks that way. You’re seeing either the stylus itself or some kind of reflection. I use a stylus brush before each play and another brush on the record before each play.
You are absolutely amazing, man. Bought one of these at my local thrift shop but the cassette player was not working. You were exactly what I needed! Thank you for the tutorial 👍
Awesome, thanks so much! I’m so glad you found this useful and I really hope it helps you fix yours! I love when I find a video that helps me fix a broken piece of stereo gear so it’s cool to know I was able to do the same.
Thanks so much! I actually ended up selling this receiver recently (needed the money and the space). I had a feeling I was gonna miss it and I was right. I’d definitely pick up another if I saw one again.
You can NEVER have enough tape decks! Especially with VU meters! Another friggin' awesome find ol' buddy! How's that reel to reel been treatin' ya? Are you able to find albums or music to listen to on it? BTW, good seeing you back.
Thanks! Great to be back! I’m loving the reel to reel, finding tapes is kinda impossible lol. New blank reels START at around $40! But the guy I got it from gave me 4 old but sealed blank reels so I’ve filled up 3 of them and am saving the last one for something but I have no idea what, haha.
I Loved Green Day’s new album, enjoyed the fast songs and the slow songs, my favorite songs were strange days, 1981, Dilemma, look ma no brains, Goodnight Adeline and fancy sauce
Yeah it’s a really great album! Strange Days was initially one of my favorites but now not so much haha. I think mainly because the vocals aren’t as energetic as I wish they were. Still a good one though
That packaging is woeful. The seller should hang his head in shame. It's a miracle it arrived in one piece. You are so lucky. I hope you let him know so he can improve. I bought an SX-780 back in 2016 from the original owner. He even included all the sales brochures and bill of sale too. What a find ! It is in absolute minty condition. Not a blemish anywhere. Faceplate is like brand new, not even a mark on the top edge either. It's like it was just taken out of the box. It is one of my most cherished pieces among my others. I have many SX receivers, from the 450, 550, 650, 680, 750, 1050, 1250 and a 1280. I came very close to getting the coveted 1980, but it went for stupid money as usual. I hope you enjoy your 780. If your Darlingtons ever fail, you can get an upgraded STK module kit for it which deletes the need to having to chase a decent pair of Darlingtons. Hard to get a good set as their are way too many garbage modules being made in China. Here's some good reading: audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/stk-0050-replacement-for-sx-780-and-others.721181/
The first pioneer I replaced the bulbs on, I broke the old brittle clip on each one. The next two, I’ve got a special tweezers that has small “hooks” and I just pulled the bulbs and replaced. I would really recommend that.
Hey bud...just now found this vid! I don't know why I never got a notification!?! Any-hoo, good seeing you getting back to your record reviews. BUT...I fuckin' hate "Green Day!" Never liked them! They put politics in their music & I don't listen to music to hear a lecture or whining & bitching. (Now that I think about it, that's probably why I never received a notice for the vid!) 🤷🏼♂️🤣 But being you were a young punk rocker back in the day, I totally understand. Punk-out ol' buddy!🤘🏻
Man I dunno wtf is up with YT but I never got a notification you commented on this! Crazy! I don’t really pay attention to lyrics, to me it’s kinda just like another instrument, so political stuff doesn’t really bother me. Kinda like how I can listen to other music that talks about murder or drugs or whatever even though I don’t do murder or drugs or whatever lol.
I love Take The Money and Crawl and Graffitia off of that album. I don’t really mind the other songs but nothing really hit me. It’s also very “clappy”
