Classic Formula 1 is a channel where I share my great passion for Formula 1 history. My aim is to bring Formula 1 history as close as possible to the viewers.
I'd love to know what was Jordan's budget that year. Their best year and Frentzen was not far off the drivers championship against Häkkinen and Irvine whose teams probably had much way more budget than Jordan had
I have heard Eddie Jordan saying they never had more then 70 million dollar budget, I don't know if he was referring to 1999. I Think Jordan had about half the budget of McLaren that year... and the Mugen-Honda engines were not free of cost as far as I know.
This video has reminded me just how god awful the commentary was on the '98 season review, it sounds like they got Barry Scott from the Cillit Bang advert to do it!
Another great video, thank you very much for the work 🍀🍀 It's absolutely fantastic to review this Jordan Season and the 1999 F1 year, it was one of the best ever 👍
Hell yeah this was an excellent video! Love me some Old school F1! I may be wrong but wasn't Jordan a low-key Honda factory team? Now I know they had to pay for the Mugen engines themselves but Honda's R&D team was With Jordan throughout the season. Is this true?
@@mr.3733 yeah, Mugen is a daughter company of Honda and for sure Honda was fully committed in developing that engine. Jordan and BAR became full Honda factory teams after 1999.
yeah he was a lap down....when youre a lap down, you are shown blue flags to literally lift off to allow the leader(s) by. This is standard racing stuff, you are obliged to let lead lap cars pass.....the more pertinent question is: why did michael assume that David's car would dissapear? and why did he accelerate into space on the road where the spray was coming from?
Bear in mind that this engine was almost the same as the one in the Pug 905 that won the World Sportscar Championship. Prost was not impressed when he tested the car and even told Senna so!
No one seems to realize Derek Warwick could've won the Brazilian GP in 1989 at the Jacarepaguá circuit. He ended up the race on P5 less than 18 seconds behind the leader Nigel Mansell with the Ferrari. But both pit stops by Warwick were absolutely awful performance by the Arrows Team. Warwick lost almost 40 seconds between the two pit stops he made that day. With two standard pit stops Warwick could've fought for the win that day.
For me the most exciting is the smaller F1 teams. Their cars wasn't quick but in formula 1 to design a chassis an engine ,a gearbox, suspension , aerodynamics many scientists have spend many years of their life in universities and polytechnics , studying imathematics , physics thermodynamic , strength of materials , mechanical of fluids and I have respect to all these people. Coloni , Pacific , Simtek , Minardi, Life , Zakspeed, Larousse, Toleman , Footwork, AGS , Ram , Onyx , Lola , Prost Fondmetal , Dallara , Forti , Andrea Moda , Modena lambo , Osella , Eurobrun , March , Leyton house , Spyker , Hispano racing , Haas , Marussia , Virgin and teams with better results like Stewart ,Tyrrell Jaquar , ligier Arrows , Brabham Akfa Romeo two teams Also I like many small F 1 engines constructors like Ilmor , Carlo chiti Motor modeni , Judd , Hart , Asiatech I collect models from all these teams
In 1994 and the other engines had not power. So McLaren couldn't not compete Williams , Ferrari , Benetton Most engines had the same power with Peugeot A6 , 750 , 760 hp. Lamborghini had 750 hp , but was heavier and more thirsty than V8 ,V10 engines. Mugen Honda had less power 720 730. Ford zetec engine V8 had 740 it was lighter and with better fuel consumption than V10 and V12 , but new zetec engine was only for Benneton. If mclaren had deal with ford engine , McLaren would have the last evolution of the older ford HB V8 engine which had less power than new Ford zetec engine. Ilmor had 750 760 hp maybe the best choice than unrealible Peugeot with the same power. But all the engines had lower power than Williams and Ferrari. So McLaren couldnt win. The power of the engines I found in internet reading many sites
Piquet did the right thing by ditching Lotus. Got some podiums and even victories driving the Benetton. Lotus was never the same after Chapman died. Shame.
I had that onboard of Nigel at Estoril on VHS back in the day, and played it really loud to record on the outgoing message on my answering machine back then. My friends loved it, but most people were very confused...
Very impressive footage of this beautiful F1 Season where I have visited some races. Have never seen these cars anymore so good and the impressive performance of Jan Lammers is well explaniert👍
Its interesting to note between 1992-1995, McLaren had a different engine supplier for each season, Honda in 1992, Ford 1993, Peugeot 1994 and Mercedes 1995, of course Mercedes was the manufacturer McLaren stayed with for the long term until 2014.
@@ClassicFormulaOne1 I mean they only kept changing because Honda pulled out at the end of 1992, due to the global recession that was happing at the time, I wonder how different would McLaren's history be if Honda didn't leave after 1992?🤔
@@warwickbull5559 Honda has a record of leaving F1 at the dumbest moments and thus missing the train for more success. Me personally am not impressed by Honda's official reasons for leaving F1 at certain moments in history. Those Japanese have their own strange boardmeeting decisions if you ask me. So far Honda is staying in F1, despite their very difficult comeback years in 2015-2018. With staying and keeping on progressing despite the difficulties they have gained back my respect. Honda now is harvesting the fruits of their persistence, also thanks to Max and RedBull.
Well you can disagree with the journalist's line of questioning, but you can also question Ecclestone implying that races should essentially be bought by local (or national) authorities as has become so normal nowadays. Also a bit disingenuous by Ecclestone to suggest he cares about crowd numbers. He cares about the money. Nowadays they can go to Qatar and to many other places with zero people in the stands and F1 doesn't care whatsoever. Meanwhile a German GP could sell maybe 200.000 tickets and would still lose money if some local wouldn't pay up. I understand F1 is a business and that's exactly the problem. Too much business, too little sport.
Still, Bernie owned him and outsmarted him in this interview without even raising his voice. I think Mart Smeets was not used to a man as clever as Bernie.
The Toleman cars were built a couple of factory units away from where my father worked. I was a bit too young to appreciate the significance of it, but I did get into F1 when I was a bit older.
@@ClassicFormulaOne1 I meant as fan sadly. I would love to have worked in F1 but the opportunity hasn't arisen yet. I don't live far from either the Williams or Alpine Factories, so there is always a chance...
With hindsight the Lambo V12 would have been a better bet. But can see Ron Dennis reasoning with partnering with Peugeot. Giving Mclaren works team status for first time since 92. But peugeot underestimated what was needed to be competitive in F1 and boy did it show.
Maybe the Lambo V12 would have been more competitive in 1994 but I'm not sure. That engine was quick but also heavy, thirsty and not too reliable. Also, the Peugeot deal brought in a lot of millions while the Lambo option would have cost millions. Those Lambo engines were not free.
This whole era of F1 was truly fascinating. Not just Senna and Prost, but there were some insanely brave drivers like Lauda, K.Rosberg, G.Villeneuve, Stefan Bellof... they were really hardcore old school racing drivers and also looked the part. I wish I had lived that time.
At 1:57 there is a failure: Roland Ratzenberger wasn't born in 1962, his birthdate was july 4th 1960. He had made himself two years younger for his career but it was a "fake date".
Very good video. Jean Pierre Boudy designed Peugeot V10. Boudy had worked in Renault F1 but in mid 80s , left Renault to work for Peugeot. Boudy was responsible for the engines , in Peugeot rally and Dakar program and Peugeot V10 engine in 905. Peugeot engines , in Jordan cars , were more competitive and more reliable. Especially in 1997 , Peugeot engines was very powerful and Jordan cars had good positions in high speed circuits The problem with Peugeot , in 1994 was time. Peugeot signed with mclaren , in order to enter in Formula 1, in October 1993. The engine run in dyno , in December of 1993 and in February 1994 , only one mouth before the first race , the engine run first kilometres in Mclaren car. It was too late , no time for testing, improvements and changes in the engines design , in order to be more competitive and more reliable. After the first two races , with A4 version 690 hp , Peugeot used A6 version with 750 hp. In Formula 1 , 60 hp more power, is a big step between two engines versions , especially when you have not got time for tests and changes in engines design. With the A6 version , started many engine failures. After Hungary GP , A6 version become reliable Other manufacturers start F1 engine programm , one two years , before enter in formula 1 and they have reliability problems.
Классное видео! О том периоде знаю только из фильма "гонка", статьи в википедии и документального фильма, где не было почти реальных кадров, так что было познавательно! А Энцо,действительно козел, который только с Вильневым хорошо обращался!
It was a good chassis, but better than Newey's Leyton House March? The Arrow certainly took some inspiration from the March, it looks like the March from '88.
