Hey guys, it’s Shannon or Hobikage. (Hobi as in Jhope from BTS and Kage for the Kage in Naruto). I love anime, Kpop, and nerdy stuff! Manga, Manhua, fanfic you name iI like it! Also, I'm a TikTok turned casual Twitch streamer.😅 Hopefully vlogs are coming soon! Contact: hobikage@theviralistgroup.com
I find Jinshi and Maomao to be compelling characters who work well off each other because they're both masqueraders. Maomao is cautious to play down her intellectual and medical abilities at first, but she can't help intervening when something piques her burning curiosity or she knows someone needs medical assistance she can provide. She plays down her natural beauty just as Jinshi plays down his masculinity in his eunuch role. Despite the facades, they are gradually letting down their guard around each other.
@@Padanpasih533 Natlan is Polynesia, West Africa, Australia, and the Americas. And before you respond Google it. Google the origin of the characters names.
thank u for finally speaking about this!! In a way I’m genuinely frustrated when ppl tried to shut it down as “It’s not that big of a deal shut up stop being sensitive” when no in a way it is an issue that hoyo should fixed. Of course we know that the world won’t crumble down if hoyo didn’t do this but it’s like- they pride themselves as a game that really cares about culture and details and at occasions we can see that, so that is why we want the same effort put in when it comes to these new regions. And the defense that hoyo is a chinese company n their beauty standards bla bla bla but literally the company that made the game Reverse 1999, Bluepoch, IS LOCATED RIGHT AT SHANGHAI- and they are known for their accurate representation of their game. So yea honestly I feel like all of these ppl r just genshin white knights and don’t wanna care about the actual issue and I’m glad someone like you said something sorry for the long rant 😭
I’m honestly not surprised after Sumeru, I was so upset that there was no brown skinned characters there and I was just told that I was overreacting, now that it’s happened twice more people are starting to notice this and I’m glad. I’m all for more coloured characters. Maybe I’ll actually get back into it if they decide to change something.
Literally, you are so real for this. Im half Russian and white as hell, and even so its the biggest pain I have with genshin. It just makes the characters seem blander visually because hoyo is too afraid to make characters with dark skin with fear they will “do poorly.” Like, oh my god, millions of people play this game and let me tell you they all don’t have pale skin. When the trailer for Nathan came out I was so disappointed, like how hard is it to give a character dark skin. They have always leaned for the “fair” skin appearance as people say, and even with all the backlash they’ve faced they won’t change. Over time if this keeps happening I’m sure they are gonna hear from a lot more people.
This is a fictional game it does not need representation. If you argue about skin tones in games you need help. Also it is in its own fictional universe I don't get the need of people constantly wanting to see themselves in a damn video game😂
the problem is that women and white characters are the ones who sell more, so they dont wanna loose money... a salution could be making a dark skinned character very hot (following fan service for example) or making them op tho if they are that worried
I want to point out that. Mao Mao is a very refreshing MC because despite definitely not being a conventional female character, neither trying to be the ideal woman, she *thinks* as a woman on the most essential of levels. Her reactions are potentially the rawest afab people could have that I've seen in a while. And I feel like that is something we need. Imma add another thing. She is clearly coded as autistic to md - whether voluntarily or not, but I'd tend to think it is voluntary - and at no point ever does anyone contest her womanhood on that basis, despite clearly not acting fully as it is expected of her nor having typically societally approved interests for her gender. And I love that. I also love that her relationships are primarily sisterly with other women, no matter their ranks nor their dispositions. Again, she thinks as a woman, in a male dominated society. She knows that the most important thing they can do is support each other and she actively does that. I fricking love this story. A bit of a messy word vomit but I'm hoping someone reads this and finds agreement with what I think.
As soon as I saw Natlan’s characters I was just disappointed, where’s all the flames and pyro characters, where’s the tanned skin from the heat!? This is literally based off Africa and the Americas, I’m just disappointed with Hoyo.
I’m sure there’s gonna be some dark skinned characters in Natlan. But ma’am your first mistake is thinking Hoyoverse actually cares. Yes they’re international but inside of China they have to answer to the CCP. Maybe not outside but we will get a reflection of what they get. And the reality is that in China white characters sell better than Black or Brown Characters. It sucks for representation but they’ll likely never listen to us and wouldn’t care if their game got boycotted. Even those petitions only work on US based companies. It’s crazy.
Nah the cheapest place to watch anime is google all free in both english and japanese and get this no ads(with ad blocker) and it auto skips the intro if u dont want that either
This video is so validating. I have left comments that criticise these issues on other videos and I often got comments like “it’s a Chinese game they can’t do that” or “majority of the players are white so they are obviously going to cater to them” or “it’s fictional they don’t have to represent you” It’s so difficult to not get mad at such ignorance. I am from India (one of the countries Sumeru is based off of) and I have faced so much colourism because of my brown skin. It’s so disappointing to see my favourite game misrepresent and whitewash my culture.
Like how they gonna take everything from people’s cultures but NOT the people themselves?? Like that just sounds like a whole nother level of disrespect
The fact that they can make dark skins characters but they won’t do it. Other Chinese companies such as BLUEPOCH of the Reverse1999 game has beautiful dark skin cultural representation and they represent other characters from other indigenous backgrounds as well. Truly you can see the difference and significance they put into there game and characters of different aspects unlike HOYOVERSE. And the remaining fact about HOYOVERSE is that they make dark skin characters it’s just they turn “ashy” or grey.
I usually don’t care for such things in games but come on hoyo verse, sumeru sure. Some Arabs and a few Indians are white, but this? None of them from their culture are,if you wanna take inspiration don’t pull a British museum or an Israel and take someone’s culture without representing skin 😭
Lazy? Ah yes! Because researching literally everything about culture, like cuisine, architecture, stories and legends, is LAZY in comparison to changing one color on a character to a darker tone xD. Tell me you don't actually care about culture without telling me that.
Do you not realize that your comment isn't helping hoyo's case? This just proves further that they're racist, researching the cultures to a deep level yet choosing to just not include the people from said cultures
it’s fiction. Creators have the right to take as much or as little inspiration as they want from the source material. Nahida and raiden both are extremely different from their origin (nahida's origin isn't a small radish child and raiden's origin isnt a pretty purple lady, but an oni/demon like god), yet nobody cares because it is a fictional interpretation. It’s an interpretation, and more often than not it doesn’t matter how much is changed because it’s fiction. By your logic, something like zeus from the latest percy jackson tv series would be considered offensive because a black actor is playing a greek god, doom eternal portraying heaven as full of corrupted angel like aliens would be offensive, and having an asian actor play jesus would be offensive. But here’s the thing, it’s an interpretation. You don’t need to stick to anything. That’s the entire point of inspiration. All you are doing here is gatekeeping reference material for artists. You obsessing over skin color in a video game does nothing except make you look even more racists than the people you are calling out.
well, i mean genshin never try to represent anything at all. and it is okay. it's just a matter of preferences, in the end, games are entertainment. you can always choose what is best for you. many asian games (not only cn) usually doesn't care much about representation. they sure use inspiration but it's fundamentally different than representation. also if we talk about diversity, genshin had a lot of races. humans, illuminated beasts, melusines, saurians. all living with each other juat fine. it's a symbol of diversity offered in genshin. in the end, do you enjoy the game or not is what is important.
this vid should honestly get more likes. i dont rlly like the natlan trailer even as a chinese person because everyone looks so dead without colour. plus the tan is hardly visible. our only fully "dark" character iansan looks like he had ash smeared across hes skin as hes literally GREY and even then he got 0.5 seconds of screentime. Plus every other typically dark skinned character like dehya kaeya or xingyan is given the worst kit in history.
YOU MEAN TO SAY WE GOT STOLEN FROM ABORIGINAL REPRESENTSTION DUDE SERIOUSLY I LIVE IN AUSTRALIA AND I RARELY SEE ABORIGINALS REPRESENTATION IN GAMES HOYO WTF
People seriously believe that Hoyoverse is going to listen to it, plus the characters look good as they are, the people who overreact, that game does not try to represent ANYTHING, it is just mere inspiration, it's a FICTION game, I don't know you're supposed to identify with a character or something.
Speaking from a design standpoint, if you are using something for "Inspiration" then it should only be used as a reference point to influence your own original design ideas with a ratio of about 40-60% inspiration and 50-60% original ideas so that you can confidently say something is your OWN idea, this allows you to have a healthy balance of concepts from the real world to base your ideas off of while still giving you wiggle room to innovate new concepts, as well as maintaining the integrity of your originality as a designer/creator. Hoyoverse has however not only taken inspiration from aspects of cultures such as names, but also foods, clothes, music, folklore/mythology, environments, regional flora & fauna, customs, festivals, religion, and even figures from real life as "Inspiration" for their characters (ex. Alhaithams - Ibn Al-Haytham, Tighnari - Al-Tighnari, Candace - Candakes of Kush). They were able to create characters that line up very faithfully with their real-life counterparts, including their cultures, occupations, achievements and contributions to their cultures, yet somehow missed the fact that these people were very obviously and visibly brown. When genshin starts "borrowing" literally everything from cultures and real-life people's as "inspiration" to where it's almost a 1:1 imitation of said subjects, yet conveniently decides to leave out negligible details such as skintone or proper naming over MULTIPLE Years of their game development, then it becomes increasingly obvious that Hoyoverse are educated enough on the cultures to make the right decisions but instead *choose* not to appropriately represent them. And yet, we still have a nation that happens to take inspiration from China, faithfully and respectfully acknowledges their culture, has 2 characters that exhibit their culture wonderfully, has a fully translated performance where they got a professional Chinese Opera singer to perform for them, and has an entire annual event that just so happens to line up with Chinese New Year. But of course it's all "fictional" and "made up" right? 🙄 It's all abt sexualising cultural outfits and demonising cultures until it's literally your own and your government could sue ur ass to hell and back. It's not "Inspiration" at this point, it's ignorance. Plain and simple.
If hoyo is trying to make the games appeal more to their players then they shouldn't just follow east asian beauty standards. darker skin tones would have gotten hoyo so much more attention. I've been playing since 1.0 and there's literally like 4 tanISH playable charecters. As a person of color i would love to see more melanin in hoyo's characters. Hoyo also should invest more time in the more hair types like more natural hairstyles and curly hair. If natlan and sumeru us based on parts of africa such as egypt then frizzy/natural/curly hair is a big part if those cultures.
