I get why people get the ick about shigure, but honestly I find him the most interesting character imo. Cause he does seem to have some weirdStockholm syndrome with Akito, but he also seems to be the only person actively attempting leveling the playing field in a sense. To a point where he pushes a lot of the stories main events to happen in the shadows.
I am so glad for this video bc my opinion of Shigure did go down as an anime only fan (watched the 2001 version WAAY back), but your reading on Shigure and Akito does make the dynamic more interesting and ironically a bit more equal(?) I would also never forgive Akito but I do think that Tohru is able to forgive her bc she wasn't directly abused by Akito herself, and as an outsider might be able to be more forgiving (I think it was mentioned Akito isn't in contact with nayone of the Sohma family except Shigure, and Tohru)
@@Hobikage Yeah, same Lowkey do wish she fully acknowledged the damage she'd done and let the whole Sohma family go (including Shigure) and gone to therapy But I guess sacrifices must be made for ✨ symbolism✨ (still chewing on this)
This was brilliant, an amazing analysis I didn't think of for Shigure. I think though that he's too cunning and manipulative for me to see him as a victim of something like Stockholm syndrome... Dude knew exactly what he was doing 😒. Could you do another one of these Fruits Baskets video on Akito please? She's my favourite character and for me was another victim of the zodiac curse and a traumatic childhood - even in spite of her horrific actions! An instant subscribe from me 😊
While Shigure and Akito still gives me the ick on a shallow "you had seggs with my abusive mom to spite me???????" level, I respect that this video exists exactly for people like me, so that I can form my opinion based on seeing both sides
I adore fruits basket, and I am saying this as someone that haven't read that much shoujo. It gets so much right, from the drama to romance and character writing. Kyo and Yuki's character development is hands down some of the best I have seen in anime/manga. Tohru is a deceptively deep protagonist too, she does across as your very typical self-insert protagonist but the way the series slowly reveals her layers of depth and the pain she is hiding beneath those.. its so good. That being said, it's definitely a product of it's time. I am not a fan of the gender essentialism in it (pretty sure Tohru says that all girls dream to get married or something in early season 1) or how it's kind of embraces underage relationships, especially with tohrus mom and how her friends also got hitched with adults towards the end. that was weird af justice for shigure lol
I don't think Katsuya Honda was predatory towards Kyoko. If their relationship wasn't a wholesome one, then why was he the person Kyoko first encountered when her soul arrived in the Fruits Basket version of heaven?
