Is this a private, for profit company? Or is it a city owner entity? If y'all are giving tax money to a private company to do municipal services that is an enormous policy failure and a waste of taxpayer money.

What a wonderful story. As a brand new student at NCCU in 1977 this was the first time that I saw an all black fire station. Me and my dad went in and everyone was nice to us. Daddy had wanted to be a fireman and ended up working for Norfolk/Southern RR. This gentleman is special and a book needs to be written on this by his family.
@tylerterry4030 When a borrower defaults on the City mortgage, the balance of the loan becomes due and payable as stated in the City of Durham Down Payment Assistance (DPA) Program Policy and Guidelines.
This program is not an appropriate role for government. It is basically taking money of one person's pocket and giving it to another person. If I took money out of your pocket, then I would be called a robber but government gets away with it. The assistance is describes as a 15-year forgivable loan - - does that mean that the recipient has to live in the house for 15 years, then the loan is considered paid in full? And they never have to make any payments? What's the point in qualifying them if they don't have to repay the loan? Just another welfare program.
@johnmcrae5043 The City of Durham Down Payment Assistance (DPA) Program provides up to $80,000 to qualified low- and moderate-income first-time homebuyers. The assistance is in the form of a zero percent, forgivable loan, with a 15 year term. Each year, 1/15th of the loan amount is forgiven if the homebuyer remains in compliance with the requirements stated in the loan agreement. If the homebuyer desires to sell the house during the 15 year term of the loan, the homebuyer must repay the remaining balance of the loan to the City before the lien is removed from the property. The qualifying process is required to ensure that the borrower is income eligible, the property is located in the city of Durham, the first mortgage loan is affordable, the appraised value is equal to or greater than the combined loan amount and the house meets City Minimum Housing Code.
Durham has been ruined by development. To add insult to injury, Durham leaders have been terrible at improving city schools, roads, parks with all of this new tax revenue. Why do all of the surrounding counties have better facilities? Makes no sense.

@@CityofDurhamNC all I know is the couple have been getting up there for years asking for much needed improvement for quality of life for that area…. and it keeps getting shot down. The city of Durham should honestly be ashamed of themselves. Wow.

@@CityofDurhamNC thank you for responding sincerely. I truly feel the community needs to be made aware of situations like this. Perhaps even ask why this area is constantly being ignored? I do live in the community so is there someone else that could take another look at this?? I’m very concerned for this area and the people living in it. There is no other area of Durham (that also has a hospital so close to such degeneration). Thanks again for the info. Please encourage your leaders to revisit this topic and advocate harder for this area it’s starting to look like perhaps Durham has deemed this area as a “throw away” area.

so property tax went up, electric bill skyrocketed, water bill went up, and hedge funds continue decreasing the supply of single-family homes... so now we can pay our service-workers, but they will never be able to afford property here or build any equity... and if we tax the big businesses or the rich, they will get scared and move elsewhere, so lets have the diminishing middle class subsidize all this and really increase that gap between rich and poor... at some point we need to break this negative feedback loop with some different policy, wish I had some constructive ideas.
