For ocean going boats, keep it simple. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. You will need to be able to fix anything and everything on your boat, and have more spares. Catamarans are very weight sensitive and centre of gravity and centre of rotation. Boom furlers on cat with a flybridge is an aberration as the both critical centres are positioned too high to start of with.
HI JS, indeed all you say is correct in principle but our Portofino 52 does not have a flybridge so we do not have that issue. Being carbon with will be light and removing all the other lines (topping lift, Lazyjacks and reefing lines) reduces weight up high, and the motor is at the mast end of the boom so less momentum when swinging...
Hi DF, yes we have seen both videos. It was not the n=boom Furler that killed those two on Escape but the mainsheet that was used incorrectly and allows to flog free (and this could happen on a standard boom too). Secondly, on the Vagabonde video the say at least 3 times "Maybe WE did something wrong..." That certainly May very well have been the case as when a line is stuck, you do not just winch the hell out of it but work out why it is not moving. By keeping on winching when something is stuck, something HAS TO BREAK whether it is a boom Furler or slab reefing... Hopefully we all learn from our mistakes though so it shouldn't happen again! Unfortunately in both these cases, it appears to be user error and not the fault of the gear, all be it tragic and absolutely awful in the first instance. It was because of these sorts of info online that we had to check out the causes of the accidents and problems and discuss these with the manufacturers.
I just got back rom BVI on a 58’ FP. When the captain raised the main he had a hard time keeping it into the wind because of hurricane Beryl south of us. The sail got caught in the lazy jacks and the car jammed.
Thanks Tony for the story and yes, we have all had jamming with the classic slab reefing and problems with tangled lines as well. Everyone just accepts those as standard but if a boom Furler jams it is NOT acceptable, even though with the early and correct management, both systems can be unjammed successfully! Thanks for bringing that to everyone's attention.

Thanks MLO, nice colour and close to what we want - I call it turquoise but this is a too "lolly" bright for my liking but very close. Interesting sails those guys have on the 68 mono too!

I must say in all my years, I’ve helped quite a few other sailors to fix their mainsail furling system, either in-mast or in-boom. Never once have I ever had to help anyone fix their slab reefing system. I’ve sailed on two boats with in-boom furling and they were both very finicky as to the vertical boom angle, with very precise vang and topping lift settings required to allow the sail to furl and unfurl without trouble, which were often hard to achieve in strong winds, ie when it mattered the most. One of them had an electric motor which was a frequent trouble spot too. I decided I didn’t want the hassle and opted for the simplicity of slab reefing.
Thanks Paul, we will just have to see. Having a hydraulic vang that holds the boom at a fixed angle will hopefully help but that's why we asked all the questions and hope the answers were not just sales pitch....
Hi Everyone, Please be aware that the information we shared in this video stated that Maxspar made carbon fibre boom furlers and implied that Leisurefurl and Furlerboom don't - this is not the case as all 3 companies do offer carbon options. We apologise for this error! Also please be aware that there are many other good boom Furler manufacturers in the world and these 3 were the ones that Portofino was offering us to be fitted to our boat.....
I'd print of the two and live with it for a couple of days...Personally I'd do the same with a white and lipstick red stripes to contrast the black sails...Eli loves red lipstick...
What happened to the roller furling boom? You're getting one? This company is working with the boom company? I think your Spinnaker needs to just have your huge logo on it.
Yes, we are going with carbon boom from Maxspar and they are making it. We are discussion the sails and where they can do a logo so may have it on the mainsail...

Thank you for the Portofino update. I have my fingers crossed for you that your delivery date is not pushed back by what is going on in the world. I love the black diamond in the middle of the spinnacker but why not instead of white or grey let the boat color come back in the sail? Will blend nicely together then. Just a thought 🤔 . It's going to be an awesome dream cat home anyway 😍!
My thoughts and prayers go out to all those ravaged by Hurricane Beryl🙏 It's so very kind of you both to donate your services to help the victims of this devastating storm! A few boats had the chance to head south to Trinidad 24 hours before. Steve from Sailing Fair Isle was one of those fortunate ones.
I wish the unsubscribe issue was that simple. I have been unsubscribed from other channels in between episodes and I did not click the subscribe button a second time. Also, I have had many comments deleted by YT in the past two weeks; no reason provided by YT even after I sent feedback about the issue. I would go with your first thought, white outer edges so you can easily see the sail edges with/against your other, black, sales. Great update! All the best!
I think there must be some technical problem with the software in RU-vid for this to be happening so regularly. Unfortunately, YT may not be very open to discussion or complaints but we will need to give it a go!

Hey guys! Newbie sub here. Absolute LOVE your new Portofino cat!!! She's going to be BEAUTIFUL! She's EXACTLY what I've been dreaming about for over 10 years. If you saw my sketches you would see how she ticks all the boxes for me. I mean EXACTLY! And just as beautiful are all the people designing and building her, that you've introduced us to! ❤️ All the love they put into her will make her a very special lady of the sea! As for asym colors, my humble opinion is the black diamond with gray. (Maybe the gray could be just a bit darker? And perhaps some bright accent color somewhere - green, yellow, red? Maybe color the diamond? Or the diamond outline?) And having a quick peek at some hull colors on the web that I found (only as examples), two colors "in the ballpark" that might appeal to you are metallic blues (they just happen to be Chevy automobile colors, but no matter). 1) a dark navy, like "Lakeshore Blue Metallic" or, 2) a little bit lighter, like "Northsky Blue Metallic". Just my 2 cents worth! Sorry for gabbing away! All the best! ❤️
