After the Grande Motte Boat Show, we return to Expedition Barefoot where she suffered a freak double tornado which destroyed many boats, many houses, expensive property damage and roofs ripped off! What will we find on our return?
We also take you on a whirlwind spin to Bologna as we test the food, wine, medieval architecture and the oldest university in the world! Anatomy dissections were first studied here so we all owe a lot to these ground breakers!
When we get back to the Rhodes marina, we have a few shocks when we return to the boat - some foul, some worrying and ANOTHER insurance claim....
We share our pre-passage route planning process and departure activities we usually run through a the start of the season - so come barefoot with us for the start of this new summer season... Not very summery though with 40-50 knots storms with hail and lightning!
The link to add your Yacht Insurance Claim report is : www.barefootdoctorssailing.co...

Our Patreon option starts from only $3 per week, and will allow our supporters to enjoy live updates, early release and much more! In Dubai Jan 2025 (aboard the new Portofino 52) you would be able to join us for the launching party and test sails!!! We are also offering boat build tours with sailing off Dubai to share the progress of the P52 build and provide whatever sailing or life discussions that YOU want us to provide during all of these events..... It is a very exciting prospect and we have been requested repeatedly to give advice, take folk sailing, teach sailing techniques etc etc.... So here it is!!!
Any Patreons will have the choice to join us for these events which are usually about 5 days to be up close and personal with Eli and John and learn from their expertise... There will be sailing trips, excursions and chats during the events and the subjects will be designed to suit the participants that will be there. Patreons will receive all the sailing and talks with the Barefoot Doctors without any cost but will only have to cover their own travel, food and accomodation costs.

I am in 2 tornadoes alley here, we have had some nasty weather for the last few weeks, last weekend we had 13 tornadoes touch down, I think there will be additional storms Monday and Wednesday, it's never ending this time of year. I believe hurricane season is going to be horrific this year. I hope I'm wrong.

The normal pattern of Weather after an El Ninio heat build up in the Pacific Switching to an El Ninia event is cooling in the Pacific .. but it tends to drive Atlantic Hurricanes. At the moment Canada has got hit by Forest fires early.. Brazil has been hit by an Atmospheric river like the one that hit BC Canada not so long ago .. and you have general proliferations of high intensity weather events. The heat in the atmosphere gets absorbed by the oceans, it moves through ocean currents until it starts giving it up into the atmosphere as increased evaporation .. the scale is vast and so is the amounts of precipitation carried. The Brazil event dumped 7times the normal capacity of the whole Mississippi river but in days... a lot of that region is ranching and farming land so very little to hold it back and recirculate it as would have happend when it was covered in Coastal forests and less densely settled. The UK and Europe have experienced weeks of flooding this Spring - again setting new all time historic records. The other issue is the levels of erosion and types deposition of sediments from off the land and the effects that's having on coastal environments.

Thank you John and Eli for another great vlog this week. It seems you are picking the route I would take down southwest to Crete. I was going to suggest the southern circumnavigation of the island and then use the western tip to align yourself up to go north and do the islands east of Greece's west coast. But then you showed the forecast a few days further out. Hmmm...difficult choices there. Is that what you are thinking? I guess you already left so I hope you have a great couple of weeks sailing lined up!. The 52 is looking good. You must really be getting excited now. Eli, you are really looking great (I think you've even lost some weight) and your hair John is really long WOW! Growing a mullet! You had some really Aussie weather there for a bit, I'm glad Expedition Barefoot weathered the storms so well. It's sad seeing all the other boats so damaged. I'd hate to see you guys have to go through yet another insurance claim! Anyhow, Fair 💨's and following 🌊's guys! Stay safe.

Thanks Garth - yes we were looking at a circumnavigation of Crete but weather got in the way... We aimed to sail along the north coast and then sail up to Simi and Kos. And, Yes no boat claims but the car was another insurance claim.

Just a thought, if you are getting a lot of dirt falling through the finger holes in the floor lockers, could you buy some plastic screw top storage containers, cut a hole in the lid the same size as the finger hole and then glue or screw the lid on the underside of the board. You can then screw on the container underneath which will collect the dirt and this can be emptied when it suits you without the dirt falling into the locker. Not sure if it would work for you but maybe worth a try???
@TerryKeever

Your idea sounds like it would work. Simple and effective. Good idea to keep everything contained and easy to empty.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567

I was watching you clean out your hatches looks nasty. I have an ideal for you try and find some kind of mini cups that are just slightly bigger than the holes and maybe around 1" deep . Glue them to the bottom of the lids the dirt cannot fall into the hatch vacuum the holes once in awhile to suck the debris out of the cups.

I'm excited to watch the build of your new home - because it's like you′re building v1.0 of my dream boat and working all the links out for me! (Kidding myself that I'd ever have the money…) I've watched so many reviews and you seem to have captured and resolved all the things that niggled me about other designs. One thing I wonder about your build this video - there doesn't seem to be any centre bulge in the bridge deck? Others talk about that being to break up wave slapping. On another issue, I heard someone say that north-south beds are more comfortable sleeping than east-west. Thoughts? I'd think that it would have to be a big difference to be worth the PITA of making beds you can't walk around? Off to the Sanctuary Cove show next week!
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 2 месяца назад
HI Ashley, thanks for following and the interest! Glad we are creating what a lot of folk want as I think the brands generally make what is easy and disregard what folk would really like... Q1 - no Bulge in underwing - it's only boats that have low underwings that need to have that wave breaker. When your underwing is high and waves are not likely to break there, you don;t need it.. Q2 - We have had both transverse and fwd / aft berths. Because cats are stable, the transverse beds are fine - I think the monohull sailors have that residual fear of transverse beds cause they are not so good on monos... Q3 - what's PITA? But yes, making beds that can't walk around makes them really painful to make (as shown on one of the Wynns videos a few weeks ago). So get island beds if possible.... Have fun at the show!

Your Dyness 5KW Lifepo4 are limited to 50a max charge and discharge or 0.5C rating. This limitation is the BMS not the cells themselves. Are you using 48v system and what is your total KW system ? Are you going with standard diesel or parallel hybrid design ?

Sorry but the first university in the world is Al Qarawiyyin in Fes. Morocco 🇲🇦 dated from 9th century. Your Bologna university might be the first one in europe(1088) 🇪🇺 but not in the world. So get your facts right before you try to impress or educate . I wish you showed more about the disaster in that marina 😕 than knowledge about bolona as we're more interested in sailing and boats by watching this channel.

@barefootdoctorssailing8567 2 месяца назад
Thanks for keeping us on point! Perhaps we heard it wrong or were given the wrong info but you are quite right, the Fes Uni was earlier and Bologna was the first in EUROPE! And also the first to perform documented dissections on humans. . All those fallen over boats were in a boat yard near the harbour after the storm. We arrived some time after the storm and the marina was very quick to clean up and secure. So we were informed about how lucky we were and other boats were. You couldn’t see much trace that the tornado had been ..damaged and left .
