As someone who has a Ph.D. from UCSD and as someone who is (a white-ethnic) from the lower working class, I can say I am disgusted by this video complaining about the supposed discrimination against rich people.

At this point kids are doing more of a favor for these colleges than colleges are doing for these kids. Colleges aren't helping most students get jobs or pay back their loans, but they're picking kids that they think are most likely to be famous (if they're not already). The most selective colleges pick a lot of kids that are so successful and rich by the time they get to campus that they arguably don't even need the school.

It's 100,300 actually. I got in with full (I mean, FULL) financial aid. They also pay my airplane tickets as I'm an international student, plus around 3k for books and personal expenses, and 6k for internships, research, summer abroad, or another academic experience of my election. If you have a good profile and decent application, studying at Vanderbilt can be free. Don't complain about the cost if your kid's profile and application are mediocre.

These colleges have to deflect away from objective metrics so that they can better justify tilting to scales in favor of less qualified applicants. Also, it will help them identify the woke crusaders in the applicant pool so they can move them to the front of the line (see David Hogg getting into Harvard with mediocre academic credentials).

Great video! Could you make a video about whether or not to submit AP scores (including if taking 10+ AP courses). Is submitting AP scores optional or required? What’s considered strong AP scores for Ivy League/top universities?

That should not be any out-of-state tuition because most people can’t afford it specially to pour minority students. I think it’s somewhat of discrimination.

You are absolutely correct about this! I intuited this during the college admission process for my daughter. One thing you didn’t mention is that they are also working for the school big donors because they need to make sure the donors kids also get into the college of their choice, especially if they are good students but not in the top 10.

While a little tertiary to your point, the problem with the essay portions of the SAT and ACT was the reliability of the measure. With apologies that it's just our experience, outside of the service academies, we have found very few colleges that will even consider it for that reason.

@carlscott506
@carlscott506 13 дней назад
Hello Craig, Last week you stated the current SAT is a watered down version of the test we took 20 - 30 years ago. I am a proponent of using the SAT but if it is weak sauce, what is its use? My son received a 1440 on his March SAT (all self study) but because he goes to a Specialized high school in NYC he was depressed with the results. Even though he is an outstanding student with good extra curriculars, he believes he needs to retake the SAT. I think the SAT has an out-sized effect on college admissions process when students believe a 1440 is not a good score. Also, please explain why you have a problem with a kid, from a school that does not promote academic excellency, like specialize high schools, getting a boost on their application when they take the most rigorous classes and scores well on the SAT/ACT? Should not their grit in the face of academic headwinds based on the school they are attending count towards their continued grit in the future? This is not a personal biased since my child goes to a specialized school in NYC.

Watered down or not, its still the only apples-to-apples metric that universities have to objectively compare applicants.

A 1440 isnt a bad score so he should be fine outside of schools that focus on engineering or somewhere like MIT. Even if test optional was a thing he should submit

I'm a rising sophomore at UMich and find the whole thing absolutely nuts. It's obvious that things like "land acknowledgements" and explicitly professing your "preferred pronouns" are examples of thinly veiled political speech. Most of my friends, none of whom are partisans, think similarly; they just silently roll their eyes and move on because no one really has the courage to resist. It really just comes down to being wary of what classes you take and with what professors. I'm pre-law, so I honestly feel bolstered not to just blindly comply with these people.

The entire application process is tailored toward east coast girls infatuated with self help and Virginia Wolf essays. My son wrestles, plays baseball, runs track and loves math and science and is not impressed by much of the college process except for what some southern schools offer. When will this change? It’s been going on for forty years!

The uva tour has pronouns. Also a long section on enslaved labor. Little to no mention of Jefferson these days. Who decided that belongs on the admissions tour? There are historical tours available and that can and should be covered.
@mossfloss
@mossfloss 15 дней назад
Yes, went to UVA this summer, every guide in the intro (20 guides) stated what pronouns they wanted to be addressed by (15 minutes). Then a long section, about 1/2 the tour (30 minutes), on slavery, where the slaves lived, what the slaves did, what the slaves ate, where the slaves cooked, where the slaves' toilet used to be, who lived above the slaves, etc. No discussion about academics at all. No discussion about financial aid. Some hand waving about where you can eat. No visiting any classrooms or lecture hall. Really not a helpful tour at all! My son came out saying "I don't want to go here." Frustrating.

Experienced exactly this with a virtual tour for UConn. They started out with the pronouns and the land acknowledgment. They spent more time on their diversity and equity speech than telling them what the college actually offers in the way of an education. He quickly decided it wasn’t for him. Same with many of the SUNY schools.

Well what did you think they meant when they talk about "fit?" These young men along with those who do not share the collective world view of these institutions do not belong there nor do they stand much of a chance of being admitted. Simply put don't send your students there and refrain from hiring their graduates if you feel strongly enough about it.
