@ShiningNorway
@ShiningNorway 24 дня назад
Thanks a lot! I agree! If videos are too specific to any genre or any instrument, I don't find them very useful. I think it's better to focus on the broader musicality, which also makes it easier to use the ideas for any type of music or instruments. Also, I think we've got too many musicians that are way too specialized these days. They're awesome at their instruments, but they often times lack any message or anything they want to say or convey. With AI on the rise, it's smarter for musicians now to focus more on making music with a meaning instead of trying to be perfect. Because AI will always beat humans at perfection. But humans can beat AI on delivering meaningful interpretations of lived human life. So I think we'll see a renaissance and a return to artists being true artists now, rather than perfect little wannabe machines.

@ShiningNorway 26 дней назад
Hehe! Glad you like it! It's a great little clip! Actually the first video that started a series of "Live On Location" videos that we did after that. The idea was to play aggressive and technically demanding music in uncontrollable environments, to try to make it even more interesting and energetic. Usually technical music is performed in spaces that are very controlled, and I thought that was a bit boring. So we did this place, and a live concert (40 minutes) at Trolltunga, and a song in the desert between San Fransisco and Los Angeles. Then I started making softer and more melodic music, and the "Live On Location" idea didn't work that well anymore. So there you go!

Great and groovy! ... Same thing with guitar, I have learned to create a melody by playing less within a given scale but to slide into it, play a note much like a bongo player would tap a bongo a coupla times, zipline effect, slide back and forth from one note to another a few times, in quick succession and then bend a string in a neighboring note etc etc and whatnot. 😎

@ShiningNorway 27 дней назад
Thanks! Glad you dig it! Yeah, that sounds like something I do a lot! I choose a few notes from a scale and stick to those for some time. It creates a certain sound that is clear. With enough practice could your play style emulated? I love the punchyness in your playing! If a guitarist went Bb fretless using the index finger to strum & the thumb - attacking directly on top. (like a piano hammer) That might be a dumb question; but i’m in transition mode.😅
@ShiningNorway
@ShiningNorway Месяц назад
For sure! Of course my style can be emulated, just like with anyone else! But it would be hard for me to suggest how to do that, since I don't know exactly what parts of my playing you like and want to learn. I think the smartest move is for you to write down a list of the stuff you wanna emulate in my playing, and then analyse several recordings of me and try to figure out more about how I'm doing those things that you like. When you've got a clear picture of what exactly you dig about my playing, and you've got some examples of it, then you can start playing it on your own instrument and see if you can get it to sound similar. Then just work on that. That's how I've done it. I've done it with John Coltrane, with Michael Brecker. I've done it with the vocals of Marilyn Manson, Corey Taylor and Oli sykes. And I've done it with recordings of my own improvisations, trying to dial into the parts I like about my playing even more. Good luck! And keep on grinding away! Jørgen

I think that the only thing that matters - be true to yourself. If you feel doing ABBA or Cannibal Corpse album - fakk it, just do it. And keep on rolling. If you gonna try to please everyone - you gonna suffer. And so will your art, your heart, your dreams. That's what i hate about modern music in general - lots of bands or artists still do the same shit over and over again, changing couple of chords. And they may have some money value of it (duh, Nuckleback has lots of fans, but man - they just re-do 1 song over and over again...), but are they still true to THE art? I doubt it. But the saddest thing is - lots of artists even don't care. They hype and try to stay on the hype wave no matter what. That's why even pop music now (comparing to 80's f.e.) is mostly terrible. So yeah - fakk 'em and do whatever you feel like to do! Cheers.

This is very interesting and an extremely efficient way to handle playing keys live! Does mainstage load all the sounds in at once or how does it overcome the latency of switching to entirely different samplers with different effects in Logic?
@Paajanenae
@Paajanenae Месяц назад
Also the sounds you've cooked are very good for the old school black metal vibe!
@ShiningNorway
@ShiningNorway Месяц назад
That's an interesting question! With Shining we're doing more soft synths, which is heavier on CPU than on RAM. But with Emperor it's more sampled instruments, which taxes the RAM more than the CPU. So the RAM is really what I need to pay attention to the most. I have one patch per part in a song, and the patches are grouped into song groups which can be moved around when the set list changes. I am only skipping forward, which means that if the same patch is used for three choruses in the same song, then I have three instances of that patch in my concert project. This could easily lead to the RAM getting bogged down if the computer had to load the same sample library multiple times. So I'm overcoming this problem by using what MainStage is calling "alias" patch. This is basically a patch where it's only referencing another patch, and doesn't load the samples twice into memory. The CPU is not a big problem, since it's really only calculating running audio for the current active patch, plus a set amount of time for the previous patch, to keep release tails, delays and reverbs etc. I set that to 5 seconds, but the user can decide. There are sometimes super short dropouts when switching patches, but they're less than 100 ms, so I don't count it as a problem
@ShiningNorway
@ShiningNorway Месяц назад
Thanks a lot! Glad you like the sounds I've cooked up! I've spent some time making them, and trying to make them as efficient as possible using relatively few plugins, but still enough for them to sound cool. The great thing is that you can really tweak every details and make sure that levels and EQ and dynamics between each sound is matching.
@Paajanenae
@Paajanenae Месяц назад

Thanks a lot for sharing this with us! That was fun to watch and also to learn something new :) I remember a shorter video you did some years ago, but this was really in depth and very useful 🙏 I guess Main Stage is only for Mac so an alternative would be Ableton or something similar. Hoping for similar demonstration for Shining rigs 🤞
@ShiningNorway
@ShiningNorway Месяц назад
Glad you liked the demonstration video! And yeah, this could easily have been an hour long, but I tried to get the essential in. I haven't checked but I wouldn't be surprised if MainStage is for Mac only. MainStage is pretty cheap, though, so you could consider buying a MacBook Pro only for live keyboard use. Anyway, lots of people use Ableton for this too. But I find that having one patch for every part, which can be 10-15 per song, is a bit tedious with Ableton. It's probably easier using Ableton with fewer patches.
