George. If you have time I have a question re citric acid. I have just started to masterbatch lye solution using a 1:1 or 50/50 ratio. (Thanks Simi Khabra book) its such a time saver even when making small quantities of soap. I will be then adding liquid to get a 2:1 ratio when making soap. Would I add it separately when making soap as I would need to add extra NaOH . Would i say for example add 6g NaOH in 6g Distilled water (or the quantity needed) from my liquid to be used for 2:1 ratio. then add it to my pre made lye solution i have measured out. . Thanks George
It's never a good idea with lye to do 1:1 there's always a risk of lying particles not dissolving. It's always a good idea to do 1:1.15, that little bit extra water ensures all the lye is fully dissolved. You can add the extra dissolved lye required to the batter when adding primary lye water. Should be fine
Thanks for the video. I've made 100% coconut liquid soap. How do I thicken this? I've tried salt solution, but it doesn't work. I've tried carboxy methyl cellusose, but it sediments after some time. Whats the best solution to thicken this liquid soap. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for watching. Salt only works with olive oil liquid soaps to thicken. Otherwise guar gum can be used, I use this for high coconut oil liquid soaps 🙏
Ooh, that's a bummer. You can rebatch it, melt it down with some water, and add the citric acid that way, remould and cut. Lots of videos on rebatching
Keep a container maybe Shea butter if medium size clean and use for your Clay bags never work long term. You had me giggling I had a day like it last week at least you can re play video to work things out. All good fun George.
Sorry George just realised I’d accidentally unsubscribed though don’t recall doing so. I wondered why I hadn’t seen any updates for some time. Re subscribed and applied to join the Facebook group you set up.
My ex loves this soap I grated it in a cheese grater then grind it in my food processor with the borax & arm & hammer laundry booster. The laundry smells wonderful right out of the dryer just simply clean & fresh. I added a little eucalyptus essential oil but still fine tuning that. Thank you George I have all of your recipes. You have a beautifully structured approach to your procedures.
Yes store the paste in air tight container in the fridge and dilute it as required. Will last much longer. Liquid soap doesn't require a preservative. Make sure everything is clean and sanitized 👍
Hello, thank your for your tutorial! I'm on a liquid soap making journey and really into making my own laundry liquid soap. I'm curious, is it okay to use for washing colored clothes?
Hey George. With your water amount of 25%. Do you deduct the weight of the oat ice cubes from the water amount or is that extra liquid.? Would you recommend only doing 1% for honey or would 2% be too much. ? As I’m planning on making a bees wax honey soap. Thanks for your soaping wisdom xx
Hi Kelly, I don't bother with worrying about the extra water from the oat ice cubes because it's already heavily water discounted even with the added milks 🙏
It's still recommended the full 4 weeks, however water discounting and salt make sure at the 4 week mark it's fully cured. Most recipes using high water and no salt, the bars at 4 weeks are not fully cured, they need 6-8 weeks
Hi George, yesterday someone asked me why I put kaolin clay in my laundry soap and I had no answer other than to say I saw you and another professional soaper on RU-vid do it. What would you say? Does it add to the cleaning power somehow? Thanks
Hi George, so i made a charcoal soap and used essential oils that misbehaved. So to save the soap i made it a hot process. So i am wondering why HP copes with the essential oils and is this the way to use oils that don’t like CP? Lotus essential oil is the one i used and the perfume is amazing. I see people make comment on cinnamon oil not behaving in CP also and have saved it by hot processing. Would love to know more on this.🙏🏻
The saponification happens in hot process when you cook the batter. So the essential oils that will accelerate or misbehave in cold process soap won't in HP
Hello George. Your video was enjoyable to watch as you fumbled along with weighing your oils etc. I love your sense of humour and it is so comforting watching experienced soapmakers get confused like some of us amateurs. Honestly, just putting my ingredients through soap calc is bigger than Ben Hur most times! Your soap looks lovely, as always and I would be one of those soap customers at your local cafe. Keep well! 🦋🐾
Thanks so much Marion, always nice to read a comment from you, hope you're doing well 🙏 oh yes it most definitely happens to everyone don't worry, it was one of those days 😄 much appreciated 🙏
Loved the video George!! But you know I love to come along for the journey no matter how many bumps in the road there may be!!😂😂😂Loved seeing your soapy human side where all the messy things that happen to me happened to you. That said, you were still so darn neat!!!! Well done! Loved the miscalculation. These things happen to me too and it seems so obvious later but not so at the time!! Your soap was soooo pretty. Well done. Love the chatty video. It is like being your neighbour and coming to watch you soap!!! I hope you feel better today. Xxx love Cass. Xx❤
Thanks Cass, It sure was a bumpy road but got there in the end! Definitely lots of human side happening with me and soap making haha. Yes lucky I am in the habit of triple checking everything! It would have been super nice if we we're actual neighbors, I'm sure we'd be at each other's house on the regular! 🙏🙏🙏
@@DawnOrganics hehe. I’d be over all the time. I’d be like that little dog you had to shush and remove so you could focus!!!🤣🤣🤣 I would love to be your neighbour. If only I could afford to move where you are!!!😂😂🙏 I always love your videos when you do something goofy and we get to hear your big hearty chuckle! Xxxx
I was going to ask about your health but then you wrote that you were having a bad day with fibro symptoms. I hope those days are fewer than the good ones. 🙏
@@DawnOrganics Glad to hear it. When they're mostly good, it's easier to deal with the not so good days, and it's great that it doesn't stop you from making soap.
Good thing you caught your math error! I noticed it when you added 600g to the rice bran amount and thought, O no! but I forwarded to see the outcome and saw you cutting it so knew you caught yourself. 😉
hehehe, yes indeed, Is why I always triple check things, especially when it's one of those days. I can easily make simple errors, but got there in the end 🙏
aw there will be days like this.. I did actually prefer this type of free range video where we get to hear you chat about whatever and all the prep. I find it interesting and relaxed if you know what I mean, which I definitely enjoy. Beautiful soap George and I love the idea of a members thing too. See you next month x
Most certainly!! Ahh that's nice to know on all counts. I felt like my videos we're losing it's touch, so thought I'd do something different and have a chit chat along the way! Thanks Holly 🙏
Thanks Holly, yes I always did to! Then I seen someone in a soaping video pour it that way, I was like hmmm!! Even works with long life milk containers too! So handy
So I jumped in and gave it a go. I would love to hear if anyone else has done anything a little different and what happened but George please tell me if I have set myself up for problems at some point. I did a 1kg batch of oil, coconut and rice bran. I added the lye followed by 400gm of glycerin and cooked that till the ph was at 10. Took a little longer as the temp was a bit low. Left overnight and the ph in the morning was good so I transferred the paste which was very translucent brownish colour to a big pot and added sodium ascorbate and sodium lactate. The whole thing melted down very quick. Very liquid, good ph and beautiful lather. So many different ideas so I just tried to jump and see what happened. Always worried about waste when the funds are tight. Thank you for your inspiration George ☺
George, just doing some more hunting around. There are some who are totally replacing the lye water with glycerin?????? And cooking the oils with that???? Does it really matter at what point the glycerine is added and do we need to think about the water ration??
Sorry George me again, i am tying to get this right…….you made mention in one of your videos about Elly using Glycerin and making the soap faster. I don’t seem to be able to find where she has done that. So is it ok to add the glycerin in at an earlier point for this to happen? 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Yes George you are correct in your comment regarding the access to oils and the price. Ridiculous. So I ask, is this a good all rounder for eg good for clothes washing as well as personal use? Can’t thank you enough for your fantastic support, you are a wonderful human being.
Hi George, thanks for a wonderful lesson as usual……; Just wondering how it goes with adding in milks to liquid soap? E.G. coconut milk or oat milk for skin problems…..I have some in the family who only use the oat soap because of skin issues. Would be interesting to know if we can go down that track. Thanks again for your generosity.
Thanks for watching. You cannot add milk to liquid soap it will spoil and ruin the product. It's recommended you don't, they are not like bar soaps because of the high water content. Best to avoid
Hi George, i have created a salt water soap as i live in Queensland by the water nice bar, and the family loves it. You mentioned that you have an essential oils blend, and one of the oils in your blend was petite gream oil. Is this essential oil that you have formulated, or can it be purchased. I have had a look on google, but I have not seen it. Are you able to guide me more on it. Thank Dean
That's great to hear they make amazing soap. I get my petitgrain essential oil from new directions in marickville NSW. Also the information of the blend is in the description 👍
This soaps looks stunning and the EO blend sounds incredible. Where did you get that giant spatch from?? How amazing. I need this in my life. That Anatto oil is such a gorgeous color!! Love the pics of the beach. Gorgeous. Great video. Cass. Xxx
@@DawnOrganics When I use 30% pure coconut oil with a scent, the soap is thick, yellow and hanging, but when using pure cold-pressed coconut oil, the mixture is as liquid as water and as milky as rice water. So I consulted someone with experience like you! I will buy BRD coconut oil and keep doing it! Thank you!
Hello, I also make it with 100% olive oil, diluted 2.5:1, the mixture is very thick but has less foam compared to liquid soaps with coconut oil. So is this lack of foam due to poor quality ingredients or is there another reason? I thought it would have a smooth foam, but when I used it, I had to use a bath sponge to get the foam! Sincerely thank you!
Nothing wrong with the ingredients you use, olive oil doesn't produce much lather, it's super conditioning on the skin, good to mix coconut oil with it for lather boosting. You can make a separate batch of coconut oil liquid soap and mix them together
hey George, thank you for sharing. Id love to try this recipe and I have a question about the water to lye ratio. you refer to this ratio as 25% - is this % of water to oil weight? Thanks in advance!
It's a great recipe and well balanced, you will love it. Yes 250g of water per 1kg of oil. You can enter this in the lyecalc, there is a water as percentage of oils in there 🙏
Hi I saw your comment about EO , that it can be strong and lasting, which I thought is never possible. So watched one video of yours today. Absolute brilliance ! U r so generous in sharing your knowledge. I'm not going to miss any of your videos 😁. In place of olive oil whatelse can be used, as it's not easily available in India ? Thanks
Thank you! It's a hard one to replace, if you can get soybean, sunflower and rice bran that will make a decent bar or you can use pure coconut oil at 100% with 20-25% superfat
