So far I have found that the differences in the classes are making me enjoy the new 2024 edition with how they present the classes in the physical book ( art work, layout and flow ). DnD Beyond is a mess right now. Roll20 has a VERY good character creation tool. Check it out.
There is a difference that was missed the 2014 rage bonus does not apply if you throw weapon. It only applies if you attack with a weapon in melee. If you throw say a Javelin then you are making a "Ranged Weapon" attack even though the Javelin is considered a melee weapon but if you use that same Javelin to poke a creature 5 feet from you the rage bonus would apply. It is a small and fiddly distinction but it is one that is RAW. The new 5.24 version just says with a "weapon or unarmed strike". Though I don't know if anyone goes that in depth in the rules weeds as my play group does but still there is a distinction between the two. Danger Sense-- you don't need to actually see the thing that is causing the DEX saving throw. There was that awkward "Well did I see that pit trap the second before I had to roll the save?" that inevitably happens in game. Now it is just a blanket advantage on DEX saving unless incapacitated. Primal knowledge-- All those abilities listed would be made with STR while Raging that means you would be doing each with advantage. Brutal Strike-- is so good because you can also use weapon mastery on that strike. So you can use the Push mastery along with the Forceful blow pushing them 25 feet away, (reeeeaaalllly good if there is a hazard on the battlefield or your buddies have a spell hazard [I'm looking at you Spike Growth] active). Or the Topple and Hamstring blow, knock them on their A$$ with Topple then Hamstring them after that step back. Yes they will get an Opportunity attack off but since they are prone it won't be at advantage. Back up say 20-25 feet. If that creature has the standard 30' movement then they would need to Dash to get you. There AIN'T no way they would get close to your back line squishies. Persistent Rage-- Really played into to giving the Barb something to do outside of combat. Like you and the Rogue can act as scouts because you can Rage Stealth at advantage to sneak around looking for the next fight. Even if you used all your Rage you will still have at least one to start a fight with.
I personally would never shame you about the services a DM provides. I DM in person with people and I don't charge them a dime. I like the work. I like being creative. I simply will not pay to play and I don't charge money for me to run.
Hey, I think your video is interesting, you just missed the change to reckless attack, going from giving advantage to all-strength melee attacks in the 2014 rules to all-strength attacks in the 2024 rules. another thing is that the changes to feral instinct are based on their changes to how surprised works overall, now only giving people a disadvantage on initiative roles. but still, I found your video fun and I'm excited with all the changes they've made to barbarian!
Yup, I can't argue. It is not stunning. It is nice from a from a distance, so for table top use it looks above average, but if you are looking closely at the detail, the newness wears off pretty quickly. Thanks for the comment!
Here's my question, this VTT looks amazing, I honestly might switch to 2024 because of it. But, does it have depth? Aside from just rolling dice, does it track conditions and effects and applies everything it needs to? I've been deeply spoiled by the depth of Foundry VTT that it might be hard for me to switch over if it doesn't have a lot of that. Looking pretty and doing dice rolls can only get you so far. There's a big reason why I haven't switched to Talespire even though I love how it looks.
I feel because they are approaching this from a "sandbox" point of view that the depth you are looking for might not be there. I know a lot of people love the automation coming out of roll20/foundry/FG. I will say for me looking pretty and rolling dice is as far as I want a VTT to get me, but I'll never fault a fellow story teller for wanting a VTT that makes life a little easier.
My hope is that only the DM needs to download the application and that similar to Foundry, multiple characters can be brought in on a player login. Believe it or not, my wife and kids and i play on Foundry even though we're all in the same house. My son will hook his laptop up to the big screen TV, while I run the VTT on my laptop. Its nice for the suprises and we all like the more visual aspect of playing on custom maps I build. If everyone has to be on a computer though, with their own logins, its going to ruin it a bit.
well I believe it's a unity application which means it must be installed. Foundry is basically a web server and a web app rolled together. The good thing about project Sigil is that they are promising mobile, so it's possible you could play much the same, and let them use tablets for movement etc, I would absolutely not expect the mobile app out soon though and would expect it to roll out PC only for the time being. I am also suspecting it's going to be released via steam. Overall I think its great, and looking forward to getting in there and trying it.
Hey Dan. Dwayne here. You totally could get a custom painted mini for less than the price you paid for that mini. I would even challenge the print quality ( notwithstanding I'm looking at a video and not the real thing). I can see " etching lines" in the print job telling me that the print job was not that good. I paint minis myself and I'm pretty sure a entry level painter could knock your socks off. Thanks for the video because I was curious myself!
Thanks Dwayne! Yeah, the more I look I the print the less I am liking it over all. I think I may do a video on a comparison of the ones I have had printed over the years. It is anecdotal right now, but I think the quality has gone way down and it is worth a comparison and would probably make a good video. Daniel and I have done some searching and I think you are right on what's out there. I think I am going to find someone to paint one and do that comparison. Like you said, I think I might be able to get better quality for cheaper. Thanks for the comments!
Have you ever tried Talespire? You can build enormous maps with multiple levels, which you can focus on a certain level by moving up and down the cutaway slider. It then hide away all the levels, assrts, and tokens above where you have the slider at.
I do own Talespire actually, I just haven't had much luck with putting anything together. I have seen tons of great stuff in talespire and I love the way you can import things though!
My main question is scaling, some maps from books have different scales for their squares and i do know players that like to play as large/huge characters or larger. How intuitive is balancing scale?
Great question! You can scale the map right now at creation to make sure your tokens will fit a 1" = 5' scale (or whatever you need the scale to be) but as of now, you can not adjust the size of the tokens on the fly. You would need to create a separate token and give your player control of that. Almost like a companion. That is great suggestion though. I will provide feedback. You should too. The more feedback they get on a feature the better! Thanks for watching!
I’ve got a fairly new player at one of my tables who came to D&D from Baldur’s Gate 3 and I had a hell of a lot of trouble trying to convince him this wasn’t a trailer for a new game he could play by himself. Had to explain VTT to him in about a dozen different ways and he was still going “maybe I can find public games of PvP to join” like it was a mobile game. I think the focus they’ve given to BG3 in this announcement was a mistake and the fact it’s coming to Xbox and PS also caused him a lot of confusion because as far as he was concerned if it’s on consoles it must be a game
I agree completely. I don't think in the version that I posted I mentioned this but in my original take I talked about how the inclusion of BG3 in this new teaser appears to be an attempt to fold in the insane success of BG3 and try to capture some of those players and bring them to our D&D tables. I do think for many it's going to create confusion. Those of us in the hobby already can look past the marketing pitch and see it as a VTT but someone who's never rolled the dice and only played BG3, yep, there's going to be a lot of "What is this?" Thanks for weighing in!
re. Fog of war....think of it if it was a table with real minis like you said you want....how would you handle fog of war at a real table with real terrain and minis./...ya dont really. I usually build separate " scenes" in Talespire for each room/section etc....that way if the enter a room..boom a new set.
I equate sigil to like critical role, when Matt slaps a map down. No fog of war, just the map and it's there for the encounter. I think the over arching design of the dndbeyond VTT system (Maps + Sigil) is to use maps for those dungeon crawls where we do have FOW, then launch them into Sigil for that epic encounter. How stream lined that ends up being is the real question.
I'm actually hopeful that we with Project Sigil, we could see online games come closer to the experience of playing in person because what we currently do on roll20, fantasy grounds, and foundry is far from the experience of in person.
Hey, thanks for the video! I ran a heist last week, suuuper fun! It was in a modern world campaign - the year is 2055 - and I gave them everything they would need in terms of information. Plans, camera locations, security systems, time-tables for employees...and I was pretty sure it was impenetrable. I can confirm that the players will ALWAYS find a way, but yes I completely agree that they will misunderstand stuff if you just give them the materials and let them plan while you "load the next scene" Some other notes: 1. There should always be something that goes slightly wrong when they are in. It spikes the tension. Seth Skorkowsky has some tips on this as well :) 2. A timer during the heist is a must, as you've said. 3. Don't let them sit and plan too long - have a strict timer on that. They will have incomplete info, and planning with incomplete info can put the players into a planning spiral that can last for hours. 4. Think about the duration of the heist, is it a get-in-get-out type of heist or a "la casa de papel" type of situation. 5. Secondary objectives are fun I had a special twist- time travel is a bit of a thing in this campaign so I wrote down everything they did minute by minute and at the end gave them the ability to replay it but with great cost...and if they do things differently divergencies start to appear. It was wild. Doing a video on that in the following weeks for sure.
Sadly I managed to lose the pdf I had created when I transitioned to our website. However I did create a web app for doing this camping method and you can find it on our website here: progressivednd.com/homebrew
Is there a compelling reason to switch from Roll20 to Maps on DNDBeyond? My group is currently using Roll20, but especially with the new 2024 rulebooks coming out, we're wondering if now is the time to switch and get the new rulebooks on DNDBeyond, use Maps now, and potentially make the transition to the 3D VTT when that is released.
For me right now, if you are happy with Roll20 I would not change to MAPS yet, as much as I like it. It still being in the alpha stage, it does not have many of the built on features yet that Roll20 has. I think it will get there, and for me and my players it works (in person and online combination) That said, once Sigil is released and we really get to dig into it (ProgressiveDnD will be doing indepth analysis and live stream testing of it) it looks like it will integrate with MAPS and that could be a big game changer. Thanks for the comments!
As a survivor of street gang violence. Attacks of Opportunity are not realistic in the way these mechanics are shown. Getting attacked would provoke an attack of opportunity because they are entering your hit range zone. Other method would be if they escape a grapple, this allows the grappler to attack them as them escape them. In reality, you want to keep a distance between you and your opponent because no one wants to get hit, specially with a rusted knife. This distance won't let either people get hit, they need to take at least one step to get closer enough to attack someone. Now considering this distance, you take a quick step back and you are even further from your opponent, this means your opponent needs to take even more steps to even reach you. Realistically, attacks of opportunity should not work as they do which makes thigs more complicated. No disadvantage needed to move, might as well give them that attack of opportunity if they get attacked, but mobility in D&D is heavily restricted for no reason. This is what makes the combat to feel stiff.
I'm all for a complete session zero to make sure everyone is on board, but do not like tools that allow players to stop the game or change the game in the middle of playing. "Yes" to the session zero and lines/veils, but a hard "no" on things like the X card.
That is a great compromise. I really think the safety tools are probably beneficial in a convention atmosphere, but a good session zero discussion is much better for a longer campaign.
I think we can hope they will have it automated in the future, but with how easy it is, it takes longer to type this response then it did to add a spell.
Wizards of the Coast can't help but mess up every opportunity given to them. I don't know why we even bother with them anymore. I stopped support a while ago..
Yes! Me too. And I also want to see the 3d dice. The latest up does at least acknowledge that it is not there yet, so at least it sounds like they are think about the 3d dice. Encounter creator does seem like a natural fit to run the combat tracker as well.
I've been at both ends of the table, as a paying player and as a paid DM and I absolutely love it. It is worth it. I usually compare it to bringing snacks for the DM, one usually brings snacks or drinks to the DM, who usually hosts and preps the game for all of us, but since we play online they usually 'host' on discord, but they still do the prep and work and still need to be compensated in some way. Before doing this thing online I usually showed my thanks with snacks, minis and even books, now I do so with modules or just cash, and my players do the same to me now, even friends, they might play for free but they still are generous and get me the book or modules as gifts and to help me run games for them. 15 to 20 usd is worth it most of the time, most DMs, myself included, offer access through a platform to a lot of books and materials, we usually either bought or pay a subscription for the VTTs themselves and, of course, they do a lot of work behind the screen. I've even taken some acting lessons and improv / voice coaching to improve some aspects that my players and me enjoy of the game. So, even if you don't want to 'pay' for games give it a try, or at least gift your DM some snacks, and minis, and books, everything helps and your DM will appreciate it enormously!
One of the most honest reviews I have ever seen. It's nice but it should have basic window functions and I wouldn't be interested in it if it does not do interiors as well. I am looking at this video a year from the date of this video so maybe the creator has resolved these issues.
It’s actually one I created for my family and friend games, there’s a closer look on a recent video where I set up for this live steam. It’s a very basic vtt but that’s all I ever wanted.
It’s like paying to go to a convention where the highlight of the convention is the other people who also paid to go to the convention, or is that just me?
Really informative vid! I have players that have 10 round auras like the Unicorn totems. Is there any way to lock the aura to the background? Me and the players keep accidentally grabbing it when moving tokens.
Thank you! I am not aware of a way to lock a shape you a token, but that is a great idea. I would definitely leave feedback on that. Maybe they can get that into the alpha or beta testing g
I've started my first solo. With guilds and Cheifs Huts. Basic maps, town layouts, list of names. Try to remember each usually only 1 or 2 npcs in 2 or 3 different towns.
Good video. If I had a group of friends that I met regularly with to play DnD then yeah I wouldn't play online. But as an adult with a job and kids (so limited free time) that is a lot easier said then done. Online just works better for my situation. I'm glad you mentioned the cost. I am not in the US so a US$20 dollar game is more like $35+. Paying that a week adds up. But I can find games that match my price point.
stick around, in the coming couple of weeks once we have had time to really feel it out, we are doing a video on play by post, there's lots available on startplaying and so far the experience has been outstanding. DND whenever you have time, no late nights, no scheduling, just asynchronous :) Thanks for commenting!
the maps were done mostly in an app called wildshape on steam, but i do not recommend it now because the developer abandoned the project. There's lots of map makers out there. Dungeon Draft might be the most useful one.
The fog of war looks very rudimentary. Is there a graceful way to handle secret doors and such, or do you just have to try not to reveal them as you uncover the map?
Yeah, it is very basic hide and reveal mechanic, so like you mention, secret doors require very careful reveals. But it is still in alpha stage so that is an obvious area they could improve. Dynamic lighting would be a great improvement. Thanks for your comments!
Hey man I see the video of your channel “ how to make war On D&D “ ,I really like the tools used on the video but I cannot find them , you guys can tell me the names of such tools ?
Hey there! okay, so the map maker shown briefly is WIldshape, available on steam. I do not recommend getting it because the developer has abandoned it. As for Moat VTT, where i show game play, that is a VTT I built myself. You can see it further demonstrated on the next upcoming live stream on the 12th. This VTT is very basic compared to most others, but if you head to our site www.progressivednd.com and click on the moat 3d VTT at the top, you can learn more about it. There are no tutorials to it though, so it's not easy at all to learn, but if you want help you will see where to join the discord on the main page of the VTT. Thanks for watching!
Yes! Exactly. It seems like a no brainer and not that I think DnDBeyond needs more money, people would buy more sets of digital dice if they could show them off. Thanks for watching!
