Hi, I'm Jim Chandler, and welcome to my RU-vid channel. I help dedicated male rock singers to sing better faster so they can improve their voice and sing with more power and confidence through optimised training of body and mind through private sessions and transformational online courses
I started Rock Your Best Vocals to share everything I've learned over 30+ years as a professional vocalist, and over 20+years as a professional vocal coach. For me, there has been a LOT of trial and error on the way, and my goal is to help people avoid the errors I suffered from singing incorrectly.
From my experience I know it can seem out of reach or daunting to get a vocal coach, but until you do, you are 'searching around in the dark' for what works and likely damaging your voice in the process.
So to help you, it is with my utmost integrity that I share all my best tips to sing with power confidently and safely in my private sessions and online courses.
He’s a master, dude. One of the best to ever do it. The guy always stayed in his lane, vocally, and knew his instrument well. What you don’t hear people talk about is his breath control. Those high notes come from his stomach, and he learned really quick how to use projection to extend his range. One of the absolute goats
My understanding of Inalare, is the feeling of 'inhaling' the notes... it's very similar in my opinion - meaning that you are restricting the expulsion of air (because you only need a very limited amount of air to vibrate the cords, and any excess will only damage your cords)... again, this is all my own opinion and 30year experience as a professional singer - mainly ROCK, so take that with a grain of salt... I have always relied on 'doing' rather than 'studying'
My biggest issue with his approach is that it makes many viewers think these performances are perfect and can lead to a very distorted view of what is "realistic" as a singer - and as a student...
It feels like you were looking for new content badly. My volume and strength increased by 100% in just 5 minutes using a straw device by a brand I don't want to name. Why the hate?
No hate, bruh I'm happy for you with your straw success! I always say; whatever works for you - keep doing it! I just hate when people are trying to sell a product that is not required... I'm an entrepreneur and inventor myself. I feel the 'singing straw' is trying to create a demand for something that is not really required. as I said - keep doing what you're doing!
Can I ask a question? What is the relationship between vocal compression and belting? I'm having a hard time visualizing how a singer like, say, Dorothy or Lzzy Hale sounds like they use some of both?
If you don't 'compress' when you are belting, you will push too much air and possibly damage your cords... compression is vital to healthy cords when belting. This is explained in detail in my Singing Supports Secrets course (free for a limited time) signup here: courses.rockyourbestvocals.com/support
There is a lot of debate on larynx position - neutral/low/free so never sure who or what to believe.. I’ve tried them all and (for me) results can vary depending on style and if I’m trying to mimic a singer with a naturally high larynx 🤷🏼♂️
Hello, thank you so much for this Video. I now understand exactly the technique which is used to do a fry sound. But my Problem is I sound like a compressed mini Duck. 😅 It is hard for me to find the cool Rocksound like you have in your voice. It is sad for me because I train this a long time.
compressed mini duck? hmmmm don't be so hard on yourself - you probably don't sound the way you think you do (we often are too critical of our voice - especially if it is unique, but unique is a GREAT thing! You can stand out and be heard a lot better than all the others!)
Glad to hear you're finding a reason and hope you can get some treatment. I have a hereditary hypothyroid. I've been on a medication for almost 20 years. Sometimes I feel like it affects my voice when my thyroid levels are off.
Wow - that's wild! Thanks for sharing and support! I didn't know how common it was (Joe Rogan has it too!) I also wasn't aware how it affects the voice, because nobody I've reached out in the medical community, (and even professional vocal coaches / speech therapists) identified this as a potential cause! So frustrating! Glad to know now, and be on the path to recovery.
I sometimes forget how long Aerosmith been around looking at his vocals in 70s in some way he improved with age though might be because they were on substances at that time lol
Doing it while breathing out doesn't quite get the fullness of the harmonic; I saw a remarkable David Lee Roth clone and a cover band ages ago, and he nailed all of those sounds PERFECTLY! On a break between sets, I got to ask him how he did it; he said... " - in! "... So you reverse the airflow when you're singing those notes, which is kind of tricky, but works perfectly!
It's good that you finally found out what was wrong! Do you have to have your thyroid removed or can they leave it in and just give you supplements that have what the thyroid is supposed to make? BTW, do you think might make a how to sing like Ronnie James Dio video?
Hi Russel thanks for your concern - appreciate you! It’s just a treatment with pills 💊 not removal (think that’s only for cancer but I don’t know much about this - just learning) keeping requests to subscribers as priority for the moment (it’s FREE to subscribe, so I am trying to increase that to help more people looking for my help)
Most of my hoarseness is because I still get sloppy in the passaggio/post-passaggio at times tbh. Masculine ego gets the best of me, and I keep it loud and chest dominant in that F4-B4 zone.
Totally understand the ego thing - especially when performing I often push far beyond what I should to bring the crowd a “show” (like when Alex terrible hits his forehead with the mic - it’s to “flex” his character’s level of IDGAF)

Put it this way, I would love to be able to sing like this but . Let’s get real he is singing like this because he has so so much pain behind him and behind him again like you wouldn’t believe. So what I’m trying to say is the pain he feels and buries deeper and deeper brings out the pain vocals we are hearing now. It will never be matched ever. Just like Jimi Hendrix and his mind blowing guitar solos. It will never be matched ever haha
It occurs to me that the mix on Kill 'Em All didn't do James much Justice and neither did the doubling of the vocals. I wonders if he would've found himself earlier if he hadn't done that? Also, I don't think his singing sounds as constricted as you portray it even in the older recordings. Nasal, yes, but not that squeezed. My opinion, of course.
You cant sing like James lol, James voice is unique to James , it is physically impossible to sing like him, you are going to sing like you trying to sound like James that's about it
Jim, I identify so much with your story of questioning oneself with information overload and longing for the blissful ignorance. Love your work and thank you!
Doing community theater and got cast as pilate in jesus christ superstar. Im a baritone C#2 - A4. But need a Bb for the end of Pilates trial before christ. This is going to help
oh cool! I played Jesus in JCS in 2008 and being a 'baritone' was a challenge - but using 'mixed voice' was manageable... I fell in love with the whole show and all the songs during my tenure - it's amazing! Best of luck as Pilate!
I'ts been almost 10 years that I want to learn how to sing with distortion but I never could. Your video helped me a lot, it was the only one that did, but still I'm having a lot of trouble with getting that distortion, I can activate the vocal fry, but I can't sing it loudly with the vocal fry. I can get a very little dirty on my voice when I let less air come out like you said, but then the distortion is not powerful. I other words, if my voice is loud and powerful it's not distorted. Do I have to combine the vocal fry with the baloon thing you said in you video about compression? I want to sound like George Yanagi, Crazy Ken Band or Tom Waits. That kind of drunk blues man voice lol
Hey, good job. Since you asked for comments about what we get free in life that we don't appreciate or make the fullest possible use of, my answer is....time. Look how some people squander their youth because when you're young, you don't really understand how bad it sucks to get old and start losing everything you once had best...so people tend to take youth for granted when you look your best and physically you're at you peak and you've got tons of energy and you heal from injuries faster and of course having fewer responsibilities, so you're really free to do what you want to do and not worry about obligations to your spouse or your kids, because you aren't married yet and don't have kids yet. The bottom line is that there is a freedom that comes with youth and it's a freedom to try things that you might not get a chance to try when you get older. Along with that freedom of being young comes all those gifts like looking your best and being at your physical peak. You can look good on only 4 hours of sleep! I bring that up because suppose someone who is 40 years old decides he wants to learn to sing and become a rock star. Suppose he learns quickly and he feels like three years later, at 43 years old, he's ready to start a band. Maybe they write songs and get tight as a band in two years. So, when he's 45, he has a band that's ready to make a demo to send to record companies. What record company wants to sign a band of 45 year olds who have no previous experience touring or being signed to a record label? They'd have to make their own album and basically, be their own record company and market their music themselves. Well, rock 'n' roll is a youth oriented business! If this hypothetical band of 45 year olds sets up a RU-vid channel and they send their songs to the streaming platforms, they're going to be competing against bands of people who are half their age. That's going to be damn near impossible. Who has ever become a rock star at 45, having just learned to sing at 40 and having no previous experience in other bands? Nobody has ever done it! The rock audience has historically been young people. That held true in Elvis Presley's era and it held true in the 80s and 90s. Young people tend to want to listen to other fairly young people. Reminds me of The Who's "My Generation": People try to put us d-down (talkin' 'bout my generation) Just because we get around (talkin' 'bout my generation) Things they do look awful c-c-cold (talkin' 'bout my generation) I hope I die before I get old (talkin' 'bout my generation) This is my generation This is my generation, baby Why don't you all f-fade away (talkin' 'bout my generation) And don't try dig what we all s-s-say (talkin' 'bout my generation) I'm not trying to cause a big s-s-sensation (talkin' 'bout my generation) I'm just talkin' 'bout my g-g-generation (talkin' 'bout my generation) My generation This is my generation, baby
Could you maybe do one of these for Dax Riggs? He’s my favorite vocalist but I can’t find anything on his voice. You do an excellent analysis and I would love to see something on him for a change. Thank you.
Jim this is awesome! When I get into the b4 range (hallowed be thy name) I loose the grit that I can hear in this demonstration, it becomes very operatic and clear and I'm moving into mixed voice. any tips on how I can get the grit back into it as I move up in register?
You think you can make a video about how to do vocals like this? I’m not sure how I made this song and what I did to my vocals. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1XOuOcoxJrk.htmlsi=yMS9AH1bc0ROMFko
