In this video I share what some may consider unpopular opinions about the current state of our higher education system and the rising cost of tuition to become an OT.
I do feel really discouraged, but not because of you. I’m an M2 and I started 1C fieldwork today. With undergrad loans I am at $109,000 now and I have a year left! I’ve always worked hard and I work a little now, but just enough to pay a few bills. Most of my bills are paid with loans now too. I’m going to do travel OT and probably work a second job which may be as an OT or not. Congrats on paying off the loan!
I’m sorry your feel discouraged. I too used my student loans to pay for bills and living expenses which is why I have more debt than I should. Just know you’re not alone in your feelings. I’m right there with you. But hey, I just saw an article today with a proposal to cancel up to $50,000 of student loan debt. Maybe we’ll get lucky 😊
My husband and I were having a very similar discussion today. I am currently a Recreational Therapist. I recently decided to pursue OT. I hope to have everything ready to apply next year. One of the reasons this is an option, is the small amount of undergraduate debt I took out. The small amount of undergraduate debt is the result of working during college. The second reason OT is an option for me is my desire to attend a public university. I really think considering the debt you take on is important as a college student.
I’ve been really struggling after looking at graduate programs and realizing that the change in master’s to doctoral degrees will just incur more debt, but I guess I’ll just keep researching and seeing if it’ll actually be worth it.
