Neil Whitehead - Urban Landscape Artist. I work in watercolour, ink and acrylic in South West England. I love the fusion of the modern age framed by listed buildings, historic shop fronts, archways and spires. Born through 'urban sketching', my fast and fluid style is all about rhythm and expression. My work is not about a photographic representation but a more original and artful take on the form and colour of our towns and cities.

I haven’t tried upscaling my little A5-sized urban sketches - it hadn’t somehow occurred to me - I’m going to give this a go because it looks like a lot of (challenging) fun and also I’m imagining it might be easier to make prints from, rather than enlarge a little one. Thank you as always for generously sharing your process, Neil.
heyyy what such a talent, I come here bcs I found your artwork in pinterest, and found your tiktok, and try to search your name here in youtube. your artwork broaden my perspective of watercolor art, and this urban drawing is also a new to my brain, it tells me like "Just work your hand and fingers, there is no mistake on this artwork". thank you for sharing broo
Neil, it’s so helpful seeing how you work. I’m forever trying to loosen up and not mind the inaccuracies, in fact to welcome them. I’m getting there! I have hypermobility and I NEED to urban-sketch faster or I get a stiff neck/shoulders/back, so to see you working gives me a guide on how to manage. When you draw are you constantly comparing one shape to another? I.e. this roof line comes just above that one, that pavement line comes out this far etc? It’s a lot to keep in mind, all the perspective and proportions! Practice practice, I know. Thank you for your generous sharing.
so lovely to hear that my style is helpful to you. Im now beginning more in depth insider knowledge via instagram subscriptions which might be of use. Happy sketching
I realize it is a process to upscale your paintings. I am a very new painter and am scared by the thought, to be honest. I have been following you for months and LOVE your work. It's so unique and inspiring. That being said, my observation of this video is that you did seem a bit uncomfortable with the larger brush and the tube paint applied directly to the paper. Were you satisfied with the end product?
Thanks for the feedback. I was very happy with the result but indeed I like to try new things that offer a sense of discomfort. It’s the best way to learn. Adding the paint direct is a new addition to my work- trying to work watercolour like acrylic and fight the fade of heavy watercolour washes. .
Thank you, my colours are inspired by the moment, the scene itself or indeed my emotion when sketching. Aside from colours, my inspiration and main goal is to create rhythm and drama.
