Former trend-centric shopper turned mindful consumer, I’m here to teach you all about intentional shopping, mindful consumerism, and how to make the most of the clothes you already own!
Hailey, you are definitely my favourite RU-vidr at the moment. I love your styling videos because you create outfits that are wearable and realistic. Sometimes there are outfits that I think are a bit off (just my opinion, but tastes differ), but then you say you love them and would totally wear them, and you know what, that inspires me so much to actually wear what I want without worrying too much about what other people think. Please continue to make these videos, I'm always looking forward to letting you inspire me ❤ Greetings from Berlin, Germany!
This is such a sweet comment, thank you so much!! I'm so glad these videos are helpful for you. I've been to Berlin a number of times (my best friend lives there) and it's such a lovely city. I'm glad we can connect even being so far apart <3
I have been getting hand-me-downs from my neighbors in my apartment building - this seems to be a custom unique to NYC, but when someone is moving out, they’ll put out a box marked “Free” because it’s less work than taking items to a donation center. So for the past few years, I’ve been able to cobble together a wardrobe with a lot more scavenged pieces. I also have a sewing machine that I’m planning on using to alter clothes that have stains/holes, but that I wore often and would like to continue to have in my wardrobe.
I lived in NYC for quite a few years and I LOVED when this happened! Sometimes I'd just walked around looking for stuff to pick up lol. Have you joined your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook? I was in one (prospect heights) and it was great for getting free clothes! Also you're inspiring me to break out my sewing machine. Thank you for watching! <3
My number one tip is to find my own style instead of shopping even for second hand. I stopped to buy things just because they are a good deal, or affordable. If I am not 100% in love with the item or don’t have a need for it, I will leave it to somebody else to enjoy it.
I definitely wash clothes that are not next to the skin much less than I used to. I hang shirts or t-shirts that have been worn once inside out in the wardrobe so that I know which ones have been worn, and will check for stains or smell before I store them. Often I will spot-clean with a little bar of Marseille soap if the item is fresh but I dropped a little bit of food down it, before putting back in the wardrobe. If it doesn’t smell fresh, it goes into the linen basket. I also have loungewear that I always wear at home so often my clothes will only get worn for an hour or two in the day when I have had to go out, I never sit around in them at home. I tend to sweat under my arms so often tops and t-shirts can only be worn once, as with underwear and socks, but jumpers, layers or other things that don’t touch the skin can be worn multiple times unless they get dirty. I wash everything on the most gentle, coolest wash possible and line dry. With all my silk and woollen items I will hand wash them even if the label says they can be machine washed. I’ve cut up old sheets, bedding and t-shirts to use as cleaning cloths - they are especially good for cleaning shoes and boots - and sold many clothes that were unused on Vinted, or donated them. I also gift clothes to friends and family if they want them. I have a history of overconsumption so these are small steps but I am getting better! I pay special attention to fabric when I do buy clothes, and try to always shop with a list but this is a work in progress! I am taking a break from clothes shopping for September, October and November and saving the money that I want to spend on clothes in a savings account to then go shopping for more sustainable clothing in the sales.
I bought a replica of a Chanel brooch for $20 to compare materials etc. The real brooch cost $800 and was made of the exact same materials - brass, synthetic pearls, glass. The other one is a $30 one *amzclothes* t-shirt Replica - also works for Compare - I can't find any difference and still use it for the gym
I really enjoyed this video, gave me some ideas with my own closet 😊 glad that RU-vid recommended it! The pants with the stain fit you perfectly, maybe try a degreaser to remove the marks. I think that your version of the 5th outfit would look better with wide leg pants, even if not denim, maybe a black wide leg trouser 🤔 it was a good combo but the proportions looked a little bit odd
That's smart, I'll try a degreaser! And I completely agree the proportions are off. I'll have to try it with a pair of trousers! Thank you for watching!
Please try hand dishwashditergent brush it in to the strains with a toothbrush let them be over night then wash in 40 degrees Celsius in the machine 😊 it works every time for me. God Luck ❤
I always buy second hand for shirts, coats etc but because I have endometriosis my belly is often bloated and I do need to actually try some items first. I feel so guilty for buying jeans that are brand new :( I know I’m doing whatever I can but there’s no other option available to me at the moment unfortunately.
Don't feel guilty!! It's completely understandable and okay to buy brand new jeans if they're going to serve your wardrobe and your needs :) No shame at all in that. Appreciate you watching <3
Great content! I’m a 42 year old from Holland and not into all the socials and fast fashion trends, but I do see how that’s become a problem among youngsters. It’s so good to see creators like you who are educating a better relationship with money and the things you already own ❤ The good thing about getting older is that you care less and less about what others think. And that your personal style will develop clearly.
I live in switzerland, in a little town. We do not have many secondhand options here, one with very little clothes and one shop that is pretty expensive. But the church does clothingswaps every six months and that is great. I started a no buy in juli, messed up in august, and am on it again or still. I am trying to reduce the amount of clothes i have and have been tracking what i wear for about a year now.❤
Hailey your audio is sounding really good these days! Buy nothing says it's a world wide organization. I guess wherever facebook is, it's there? I give things away on my local group all the time. I also repurpose clothing that isn't wearable into shopping bags. I kind of love mending and mend my family's as well as my own.
Thank you so much, Dana! That's great to know about Buy Nothing. I love the shopping bag idea!! In the future I'm hoping to do some mending videos, might need some tips from you!
Love these tips! Sometimes I see people post on reddit about how some of their things just fell apart and I know quality has gotten worse but I do wonder how often it is people not knowing how to wash certain fibers. Some fibers just do not hold up no matter what but learning to hand wash (and not washing as often) has seriously helped the longevity of things in my closet.
Right! I feel like people just throw things in the wash without realizing the individual care of each item (I used to be guilty of this too). I'm so glad you've found something that works for you :)
I literally just was thinking today that I needed to delete Instagram and TikTok. I can feel my attention span shrinking - plus my wallet will thank me!
Hi❤I want to add one: do not buy things unless you can pay from your debit card for it and never ever from credit card. The best way do not have credit cards at all
this is such a helpful video, thank you! completely off topic, but you are so pretty <3 (i literally could not stop looking at your eyes for like a full minute) i hope you're having a wonderful day or evening :)
i really want a clothing Rack to start doing proper outfit planning. as now i always think, i need to try this and then forget it 🙄😅 but with a rack i could do a Version for me while watching
Love the simplicity of these looks! I'm a true denim girl and love to pair my jeans with boho blouses or retro printed sweaters. Elevated and casual at the same time. As for Vivaia, my favorite pair are the animal print walkers. They spice up any outfit!
burgundy-maroon-wine are my forever colours so I'm always happy to see it coming back every autumn (seriously this is not new) I'm with you with suede it's tricky frabric and can be hard to maintained so proceed with caution. where I differ is barrel jeans they are super flattering (on me anyway) and its not really new in the 80's we had a version of it and I have some Ulla Johnson pants from 2020 and they are barrel pants they used to call it ''carrot ' pants also back in the day but they were tighter are skinnier at the bottom so its just a different interpretation of that cut of pants.
Love the “not buying anything that causes waste” and I think we should embrace it more! Personally I love so many items made of faux leather but the fact the it’s not durable and it gets damaged when it gets wet and I am such a sweaty person… No no no.
It's so great you recognize that! Understanding that you can love something without owning it is huge and it seems like you have that down :) Appreciate you watching!
I love that green cardigan Edit: I commented early. Always pet the kitty in intermissions. They’re adorable! Vivaia is my favorite shoe brand. So comfortable.
I am always so surprised that nobody ever mentions that suede is just not practical in autumn. At least not if you live in Amsterdam where it rains pretty much every day 🤒
I'm from Latvia. Suede is definitely not for rainy days... but we do get dry days, when it doesn't rain at all for a while, even in autumn. So it's not a bad material... I have to carefully plan and consider when it can be worn though.
Suede is my kryptonite! But since I love it so much - I have plenty of it. No need to seek more of it out. I am with you on the barrel jeans 😂 new follower saying hi!
