The irony there, is that you can't call killing criminals, evil or immoral. If your country has a death penalty, you basically train your entire citizenry that it is okay to murder people who are accused of committing certain crimes. I say accused because innocent people are jailed all the time and innocent people are sentenced to death all the time. So unless you are admitting that the actions of everyone who kills someone who is guilty of a heinous crime, is evil because the act of taking a life itself is evil. You would be a hypocrite if you attempted to justify acting like a citizen doing it is different than you doing it.
Death note, light has homicidal ideations hence the reason he is capable of thinking about using the book. Except in this Canon he's went to therapy for his condition, takes impulse control medication. And has trained himself to maintain those thoughts. Light, uses redirected art therapy to manage his homicidal ideations to the dismay and confusion of ryuk, writes a book about a book that can kill people and becomes famous. And extremely wealthy instead of killing people 😂
