Sounds good to me. Eventually I'm going to rebuild a 305 out of a 96 k1500, I also have a 350 from 97 k1500 suburban I'd like to turn into a 383 one day. Your videos are very helpful for both the teardown and rebuild so I'll definitely be following them along whenever I'm in the position to rebuild them. Have a good day Jay.
hmmmm , no. I don't get the reference. I do know on sharp right turns I have a header tube touching the crossmember slightly and causes a vibration. My mounts have settled and headers are close to touching in a couple places. Hope this helps!
I know this video is pretty old, but I'm trying to finish my 305 to 350 swap in my 93 GMC Sierra 1500, CA model. I am to the point where all I have left to do is set timing, prime my oil pump and install my main pulley and fan. However, I started this tear down 4 years ago and due to unforeseen circumstances I had to move the truck to storage for a couple years. I have a couple wires, and vacuum lines that I just cannot identify where they go for the life of me and I'm desperate for some help. If anyone is familiar with my model id really appreciate some insight...
Just got an 84 Camaro with no motor so we r taking one of these out of an 89 Silverado. Should be fun iv never been good with cars so new learning experience
I’m a Chevy and square body guy . The engines and mechanical side of things i have never really known . One thing I’ve noticed while watching you do this. You’re observing it by its markings and features and addressing its history and Authenticism . As a firearms guy . I’m down with that and I’m going to learn about engines . Thank you for your video
@jaysgarage3616 OK thanks, I'm in-between changing to flat tops and getting balanced or not. Wasnt sure how much it would be needed or basically if it's a must do or not
@@jjmccloud Hi there , I can never recommend not balancing , however I have had/seen several engines not balanced that were just fine. There are probably hundreds of thousands flat top engines out there not balanced and very smooth. Piston weights for rebuilder pistons are generally fine. Light weight pistons or some dome pistons can really vary and should be balanced with stock parts.
Hi Jay yes I think you should tear down this engine. Also wanted to know about the angle heads is there something about them. And if so I'd like to know. I've considered putting an 283 in my GMC SONOMA yes that's an old design but I think you put the right parts with the engine would be so cool.
My aunt just gave me my uncles 1991 gmc sierra has the 5.7 but it knocks so much im just gonna replace the motor once it blows if it does i know they are very reliable
@@jaysgarage3616 did that effect the completed engine? I'm asking because I'm rebuilding this exact engine and everyone says I need to balance the Pistons/rods/wrist pins etc. I weighed the original pistons when I tore the engine apart, and they're definitely not weight balanced. Was hoping I could get some insight on this.
@@HygroHybrid Sorry for the late reply , most engines from the factory had rods that fell within specs , pistons were within a spec and cranks were balanced within the spec of parts with it. This engine was original and we used the same crank and rods , the pistons are close to factory weight and will be fine within the rpm limitations of this engine..
Good morning Jay. What rebuild kit do you recommend for my 5.7 TBI rebuild. I plan on breaking it down and going through it 100% and rebuild it for a 1990 OBS flip. Thanks for the help and have a great day
Sorry for the late reply , I had the pistons , rings , bearings , cam bearings supplied from the machine shop. The rest of the parts cam from Summit and Rock Auto , there is never one kit in particular that includes everything I am looking for. Hope this helps!
I'm about to do my first rebuild of a 350 I have been working on my own tractor trailers and machines and my whole life and I never did a rebuild of a gas motor and this is the exact motor I am going to rebuild you are teaching me a lot right now
*Great video! I too, have been working with engines for decades. Greatest thing in the world. Brake clean is now classified as a pretty heavy carcinagine. I used to get it on my hands and I breathed in the fumes a lot over the years. Stay safe, bro. Nitrile gloves and ventilation help a ton.*
The cam gear will only attach to the cam one way, with TDC at piston one, just put the cam gear on the camshaft and rotate to match the timing points. At this point the cam will be in the correct position.
Hi , This engine cost roughly 3700-3800 for all the parts , machining , water pump , plugs , wires etc. It might be a little more today but that was in Canada , hope this helps!!
Sir! Your opening comment was you have never done a video! Well! Very impressed with your attention to detail, the way you show how everything is taken a part, what to look for.I have never taken an engine apart. I have been debating on pulling my engine from my project 1987 Chevy K10. After watching your video ( going to watch more of your videos) I am going to attempt it. I like how you keep your work space organized. Thank You Jay! Please keep making videos for guys like me!
It looks hard putting the lock ring with the tranny out!. I was thinking doing it while its up installed because i dont want to do all the work on getting it out just for that. I might not do it 😢
just getting ready to do this.cant i leave the starter on, and install it before i put the motor back in.thanks so much for doing these 4 videos.they are going to help allot.
Hey thanks for watching and leaving a comment , when the intake is off it easy to take out the starter , you will do the converter bolts through there as well. Good luck with your swap.
As soon as i saw the dash i knew the truck was a 1984 , the later dash design was not near as nice, try and score a good earlier dash to retro fit and u pay big $$$
Nice job on the exhaust system , i would have been tempted to put in a X pipe , i have an X pipe in my Monte and it sounds pretty kool when the revs are up going through the gears. There is also a similar mandrel bent system kit on Amazon
Mileage is usually really good with the 305 and with fuel prices so high people will retain them in certain vehicles/situations. For a daily driver they are great.
Doing this job on my 2009 Saab 9-7x and helping me a lot. Had an engine fire that took out everything in engine bay and putting an engine from a donor car. This video is a life saver.
Hi There , this engine cost around 3700.00 cdn for parts and machining , no labor. I do not have an adjustment video. Make sure the basic tune up items are in good shape , adequate fuel pressure , good filter , choke not partially stuck on and the weights in the distributor are free , ex you can move the rotor and it will move back on it's own. Does it still have a catalytic converter? is it plugged? Good luck!
I couldn’t quite tell from the camera , do you place the plastic gauge on the cam and then when you tighten the bearings on it leaves some kind of thickness mark from the pressure?
I apologize for the late reply. Clean bearings and clean crank , no oil or lube , set crank in the block (do not turn) set plastigage in the center (you are checking vertical clearance , tighten cap's,(torque to spec) , loosen and pull off caps and measure. Thanks for watching.
I just did swap from 2.8 to 4.3 but cost bout same just couldn't find good 350 every time I did find 1 something was a matter with it so bought heathy 4.3 from c1500 just change manifolds and used same wiring just modded some wires
Just took it on a nice drive this morning. So far so good , 3.08 so it spins pretty hard. Have an 8.8 explorer diff to cut down when I have some time or before this one goes hopefully. Thanks for watching.
@@jaysgarage3616 I would put a different gear in it or locker 8.5 Camaro would be better but lot mods I'll probably be working on a 2 gen Sonoma tomorrow but it has small gear it has 350 sbc but my self I got 89 S10 blazer I swap a junk 2.8 with 4.3 just had to couple mods with wiring harness with 700r4
With the 7.5 inch rear end taller gears (ie, 3.08, 2.73) are stronger and can take a real beating , taller gears are much stronger because the pinion gear is much bigger , the 4.11 (a gear u dont want to run on the street anyway) has a pinion more like a baby's fist and is more likely to strip itself or the crown , stay away from your lower gear ratios and don't worry about it , thats been my experience.... Krank-on !
Old video but I'm about to start next week on tear down on a 283 be nice to have one I know someone built who knew what they were doing. Couldn't imagine shipping freight cost on a 283
