The mod looks pretty straightforward. I just bought an old 1953 QD-13 and would like to do the mod. I would very much like to know how to source the parts without dumping more on them than I paid for the motor.
I just finished up with the 2nd 5.5hp that I bought yesterday and it had it's first extended run test-tank trial! I've been working on it for about 12 hours. It gave me fits! I even took another Tillotson MD-93A off the West Bend Pike and after tearing it down and cleaning it thoroughly, I put it on. I saw improvement, but it still wouldn't stay running more than a minute or two. Ended up, it was the dang fuel pump in the end!! Lol 😅
Thanks! I took the entire ignition armature plate off and put a 1975 points and condensers armature plate on it because a new stator is nearly $460 shipped. Not bad, eh!!??
I picked up a 14 hp Ted Williams (McCulloch) last Saturday. I was lucky. No parts missing!! Cleaned the points and she fired right up. I had to make new drive pins for the Impellers. ( I replaced them, (Impellers.) I had them in stock. Same ones you used.)I should be able to test it Saturday (20th)
Lawn boy coils are a better fit as the HT wire exits toward the back of the coul instead of exiting on the side. It is a good move to swap to more readily available coils. Longtime ago ( 45 years ) I done something very similar to a Martin 100 outboard motor. on such old equipment, there is no other way to keep them alive. good video
She sure does! Love these West Bend Outboards! They were underrated for sure! These would also be known as West Bend Shark 🦈 motors once Sears finally released them from an exclusive contract. West Bend, while under contract with Sears, could not produce outboards for sale in the USA for any other than Sears, including their own trademark!
On the high speed you come out 3/4 of a turn from lightly seated. That is the starting point but then you must put it on the boat put it in gear and go to full speed and turn the dials both ways until the motor falters, going back and forth until the smoothest operation is achieved
I'm currently working on a 1971 Johnson 6hp 6r71G, I have everything working on it to were it starts in 1 pull from cold, but I am unfamiliar with the lean and rich knob tuning. Do you have the same motor to make a video on going over the Lean and rich adjustment? When putting the lean and rich needle in, I seated it in gently and did a full 360 degree turn out and then a 1/2 turn out after that to get it into position "according to online forums I saw" let me know if this does or does not sound correct based on your experience. Also when rebuilding the carb, I made sure every port, jet hole ect, were clear of debris or any obstruction, adjusted the float bowl and tested to make sure it was adjusted correctly. I just need to know how and or if I need to tune it in using the lean and rich knob. Thanks!
Yes, but if it's the stator, it's over $400! That's why I put this other ignition system on it! Put the model number up here and I'll see what I can figure. Actually, send the information to my phone @ 9898205477 Thanks 😊
This is the CDI ignition motor that I put a points and condensers ignition system on because of the cost of the stator. New stator: $427 ➕️ Used parts off a 1975 Evinrude 9.9 - $0.00 😅😊
These had an issue with rubber grommet under power head swells closed around copper water tube from water pump in salt water marine use. I fixed many at dealership back in 80s. Excellent motor otherwise.
Well it's a long shaft too and I'm trying to see if it's convertible I have extra parts but I'm not sure if it's going to work I might have to put it back to a long shaft and then if I do I'll have to make a Jack Plate for it or it won't perform properly
There is a 16hp Elgin too! It was the First year for the fiberglass hood. I have one and it does run, but i need to finished tuning the ignition so i can take it out! It is HEAVY! Weighing around 94 pounds! I have a tank test video of it running
Thats awesome. Looks like she enjoyed that ride and a perfect day for it. I took my 97 year old great aunt out last year on the boat and she caught a walleye. Thats an amazing generation.
We had a place on a lake in Wisconsin. In about 1961 Dad went to Sears to buy a drill or something and came home with a 25 hp Elgin. Turquoise Blue if I recall. Good motor. Don't recall if it had the Bail-o-Matic feature or if that was the 16 hp Scott Atwater that preceded it.
No problem. Franz Marine in Grandview Missouri has everything you would need. I have a dozen Chryslers of differing hp. Franz Buddenberg. Franz Marine in Grandview Missouri +1 816-966-8085
18mph is solid on this boat! 64 inches wide and 32 inches deep at the deepest point. I couldn't be more pleased! These became Chrysler outboards in 1965 when West Bend sold to Chrysler! In fact, the recoil design will be found on most every Chrysler still in existence 🏆 🥇
