This thing seems awesome but why can't you sequence it based on musical time (notes, bars) and then clock it? Who has time to calculate the number of seconds for a dotted eigths based on X BPM ?
thanks for the video...specifically when you mentioned multing the two envelope patch cables and sending to rene where exactly did you plug them into? guessing x and y of some sort.
I have a rene2 and new to just friends and wonder if a way to use sequence created on Rene with envelopes of just friends? I am still a novice with modular and like the shaping abilities of JF but not sure how to use with cv out on Rene.
Thank you SO MUCH for that video-reading that instruction manual was making my brain bleed, thank you for that succinct translation I was losing it, you really helped me out there ⚠️😵💫⚠️
Is the only way to sync ctrl forge to external tempo that of setting it at the same bpm and resetting its “sequence” from the trigger input every X bars?
While I appreciate the work put into NG, I find the price crazy for the 2 channel LPG, even with enhanced features like 3 decay modes. It works nicely but does not warrant 500 quid price, and no vactrols either. Optomix can be found for 160 on a second hand market.
Well… I still have Optomix in my rack, but I always reach for NG first. It’s too convenient, too good. It didn’t cost me 500 quid, but it gets used enough that it would be easily be worth 500 quid. And vactrols… there’s really nothing special that vactrols bring to the table in this application other than making every unit a gamble.
@@MartinDoudoroffLLC I agree about the gamble, but the envelope vactrol ping due to the nature of photo-resistor is unique (dragging and late, just like opto compressors). A matter of taste. NG is around 700 quid atm second hand, this is mental. However, glad you found a good use for it, it is in no way sub par, just different. You can get it to sound like optomix, and then you have all these other options. But again, price is insane.
@@MartinDoudoroffLLC Agreed, Cwejman one is story on its own. Absolutely these are insanely overpriced atm due to the hype. I don't mind forking money for modules I like, I have Serge setup separately from my Eurorack so I am not being steep on money. Somehow I did not have a chance to pick up NG when it came out, since it has this acoustic model, I am sure it would pair well with physical modelling stuff (how does it work with Rings or similar)?
@@earlsfield NG just works with anything. I particularly like it with wavetable oscillators. One interesting alternative to NG is Steady State Gate, which a friend has. SSG is very pliable. The down side to all the parameterization is that you have to stop and dial in the sound you want, but it seems pretty great.
This is good to know. I have both a uO-C and a Tubbutec uTune, and fancy loading up a few of the more fun microtonal scales available. In fact, it’s a pity I can only upload ten…
Thanks for this tutorial! The scale options are important to me as I decide if this is what I'm looking for and this helped clarify a lot. Not related to this feature, but do you happen to know the range of frequencies available via the pitch knob (assuming the root knob is kept constant)?
It almost sounds as if when you turned knobs on the Ensemble, the other oscillator was harmonizing with it. Was that the case? If so, how did you patch them together?
i mean every rossum module is gold, because we all know he is a genius. but the acid rain maestro can do very similar things, with less work eventho without screen. i have both.
I got my Control forge after watching this video. Today six years later I watched it again and realised you not only explain the CF, you also manage to explain the very core of modular behaviour.
There are a few things about it that will be problematic for some folks, and I have a few disappointments with it, but it’s generally a pretty nice sequencer sitting in a middle ground between utility sequencers and “battleships”.
@@MartinDoudoroffLLC I had a good laugh at 'battleships'. Re-visiting this subject, the 248t I have occasionaly wanders dramatically out of tune, the pots are far too free-moving, and the triggering behaviour is odd, but maybe they were characteristics of the original Buchla version. As far as simple, genuine analogue sequencers I'm out of ideas. On the digital front I've been impressed with the Erica Black Sequencer, it's complex, but very intuitive.
@@DreamsOfWiresHmm. Sorry to hear the 248t pots are a disappointment. *Noted.* 0-Ctrl is very analog and totally solid, but has idiosyncratic strengths and weaknesses. Worth investigating. What about that Doepfer DarkTime you had going?
@@MartinDoudoroffLLC The Dark Time is really lovely. The pots are excellent, it has that vintage analogue sequencer feel, yet has lots of great functions. The only thing I'd change is the type of switches, they're solid and durable, but not easy to change on the fly like the rather uninteresting but very functional rubber push-buttons on the little SQ-1.
This is quite an envelope module. I think my favorite now, together with Zadar. But all the CV possibilities make it what Eurorack was invented for. Thanks for the demo.
Thank you for demystifying this module. It looked intimidating at first but now I see it’s easy to understand and use. I’d like to own one, but am scratching my head as to how to employ it ‘meaningfully’ (as you eluded to). Still, I think for the pure joy of experimentation and exploration, it would be worth my while.
