This channel is about handy shortcuts, and other iPhone and iPad features that are useful in every-day situations. Use case suggestions and demonstrations are provided as a way to inspire your ideas for customizing your device to best fit your needs.
The overall idea is how to best use your iPhone or iPad for things like research, work, hobby, and lifestyle interests.
There are no table actions or “items” action that I can find for notes, but there may be a work-around. I did see some actions for the Trello app but that’s a third party solution. I’ll see what I can come up with for a work around. Thanks for watching and for this great suggestion. Best, JD.
Hi John, my name is Bob. I am in Australia and I quite impressed by the shortcuts that you’ve created. It certainly fits with my needs and the generosity of you showing lemon creating them. I’ve become a member of buy me a coffee. Just wondering if I can pay a one off fee instead of the monthly amount is an option? Also, I don’t have the diligence and time to create the Shortcuts myself. Is it possible to get copies of them? I’m prepared to pay a fee if that’s appropriate.? I am in Australia and so there is probably an 18 hour time difference between us and I’m happy to do private messaging through email or whatever social media you prefer
Hi Bob - Thanks for your kind words and for supporting the channel! Yes it is possible to make a one time contribution. Just select that option through the buy me a coffee link. At the present time I’m not set up to provide the actual shortcut files. This is partly due to security concerns and partly because I am considering a business model. I’m a bit overwhelmed by the popularity of this little channel and I’m in the process of working out how best to proceed. I’ll definitely keep you posted. In the meantime try checking out the Shortcuts gallery. It’s available at the bottom-right of the iPhone Shortcuts app. Look for one called “Remember This”. Thanks again!
When I search for an action, if I want it in my favorites group, I tap the little “i” circle and then tap on the favorites star to add it to the favorites list. I’ll try to make a video about this as soon as I can. Thanks for watching! Please let me know if this helps.
I enjoy your videos and have been following along to build the shortcuts but I am curious about this "Find Note" function. It seems that it has had a bug for over a year now and yet it works in your video, how is that?
Thanks for watching and great question! I made a video explaining my workaround for this bug. It’s a little shaky, but it does seem to work. Here’s a link to it. I hope it helps. Please let me know if it does. Shortcuts FAIL fixed with IOS 17.4. Remember This "Couldn't Communicate" with helper is gone! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GTjyHzoJK78.html
@@AppleEDC Thank you for the reply. The issue I seem to have is when I move the "Find Notes" into the shortcut it changes to "Filter" which does not allow me to select the parameters for it to search. IOS17.4.1
My apologies and thanks for your support! Once you are in the shortcuts application, type in first few letters of the action you are looking for. Once you find it, tap on the info icon, that’s the “i” with a circle around it. Then tap the favorites icon, and that action will be added to the favorites group. I’ll make a short video on this as soon as I can. Thanks again.
I tried to follow your shortcut tip and I was on my iPhone 14 pro and could not see the comment tool you mentioned so needless to say I did not continue until I could find how to find it.
I’ll try to make a PDF version of this one and some others as soon as I can. In the meantime, let me know if you need anything else from me and I’ll try my best.

Can you post the shortcut. I appreciate you telling us how it was created and I have learned a lot, but would really appreciate it if you could post it so I could get to using it.
Thanks for watching and I apologize for the delayed response. I’m not set up to publish the actual shortcuts but I’m working on a PDF version that should be easier to follow. I’ll let you know when it’s available.
RU-vid encourages creators to make "shorts" so I thought I'd try to come up with something. Here's a longer form version. I hope it helps, and thanks for watching. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Okeadj1BTj4.htmlsi=XPJKjeGQpv-TUfOF
You are making fantastic tutorials, thank you. The level of detail is spot on and the degree of complexity in your designs allows for a great deal of learning that goes well beyond most other channels that cover Shortcuts. I hope the audience builds to make this worth your time. In the meantime, enjoy the coffees!
I really appreciate this comment. Thank you very much. please let me know if you would like to see a specific project and I’ll do my best to create it and I really appreciate your support.
Somehow I've tied myself in knots with this one! I am running 17.4.1. iPad mini 6. I am struggling to move actions, I grab hold of a completed action move it up or down the list but the action moves to a what appears to me to be a random position in the list not where I want it. this has happened a number of times and even after deleting most actions it still occurs. I g
Just started again from scratch and when I get to create note ... after if provided input .....the action moves itself to just below copy text to clipboard ?
@@kelvinmcI think it is a bug on iPads. I have the same problem on my mini also. When it happens, I just tap the new action and allow it to be added to the bottom. I can either drag it from there or I can Copy and paste above/below where it needs to go. Sometimes just exiting out of Shortcuts and coming back in fixes it.
Sorry for the delayed response. I’ve had a few comments about favorites so I’m going to try and make a video specific to them as soon as I can. Thanks for watching and for your patience.
I can’t get this to work to save my life. This is exactly what I’m looking for but I can’t get it for some reason. Would you mind sharing the shortcut?
Thanks for watching and I apologize for the delayed response. I’m not set up to publish the actual shortcuts but there is a shortcut in the Apple gallery called “Remember This” that’s similar to mine, and it is downloadable. Thanks again for watching.
Great and super useful shortcut! Many thanks!!! There is only one snag: every time I run the shortcut, it asks to select an appropriate tag from the list of tags I already have in Notes app. Not a big deal, but in your demonstration it worked flawlessly. Once again - great and practical shortcut!
Try checking the “Create Tag” Action. Make sure it has a value. I used EDCLocation. If it’s good then please make sure the “Add Tag” action that is below it is referencing the created tag. You can long press the “Tag”, select variables then select “Tag”. I hope this solves the problem. Thanks for watching and for your kind words!
I am a big fan of your channel and your scenarios. They are both practical, informative, and comprehensive, without being too intimidating! Thanks for keeping up your work here!
Try placing the “Calculate” Action immediately after the “Get Altitude” Action. Use it to multiply the altitude by 3.280839895. Then in the Text Action, substitute “Altitude” with “Calculation Result”. Hope this makes sense. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic content. Thank you! As I am Brazilian and I live in Brazil but work with international companies I sometimes need to make notes in Portuguese and sometimes in English. Not a problem when is written, however a major one if dictating. I just tweaked this shortcut by adding a choose from menu (English / Portuguese) and just duplicated the Dictate text where, if English Language is English and same for Portuguese. Worked perfectly. Just a side note in case some multi-language followers get here...
Wow! Great idea. Thanks for posting. Shortcuts has a Translate action that includes Portuguese. I’m not bilingual so I can’t attest to its accuracy but I did want to mention in case you can use it. Thanks for watching!
Yes. I use translate for languages I don't speak (works great by the way). However, in this case I want the notes to be either in Portuguese or in English. Soon Siri will be bilingual and auto detect what you say (if rumors are true). Tks again!
I deleted my response because I’m not quite awake. Let me try this again. Try using the open tag action thanks for watching and I hope this helps. I’ll try to make a video about this in the next week or so.
Am I just “dumb” or why does all of this seem so/to complex for the average layperson? O was lost after the third command. Do all of this come broken down into terms that seniors not quite so advanced, and where? Thank you
You looked like you were about my age so I made mistake of assuming I would understand you. You are far more advanced than I and I just can't follow you. There are youtubes for seniors that I can follow quite easily but they dont do the fascinating stuff you are doing that I would like to do. Maybe you could have another channel for dummies.
If the shortcut works, Add to Home Screen to complete the exercise. Otherwise go to Start. Great instructions; IOS 17.3 has already changed things but your explanation got me there in the end. Very satisfying or very frustrating depending on your results. Thanks though, I’m now open to creating shortcuts - last time I did this was .bat files in DOS.
@apple edc I noticed that you put “stop shortcut” as the final action of the shortcut. I am trying to learn more about when this should be used and I’m also trying to figure out a solution to an issue I have where shortcuts sometimes stall and don’t complete, which then prevents menu-based or folder-based shortcuts from running unless I restart my device. Do you think it’s important to use “stop shortcut” at the end of each one and do you think not doing this could be the cause of them sometime stalling?
It’s really just a habit I’ve developed over the years. I don’t think it would hurt anything to leave them out. I’m not sure about the stalling issue and I suspect your shortcut may be waiting for external information, like location, HomeKit or weather data, etc.
John, thank you for starting this great channel. You have a gift for explaining things and making them clear, and you're showing how to make some truly useful shortcuts. I encourage viewers of this channel to notice how John not only shows us how to make the shortcut he's demonstrating, but at the same time he is explaining the techniques he's using so we can learn how to apply those techniques to modify or create our own shortcuts. That is a great gift that we don't always see on other RU-vid channels.
The No.1 most annoying thing about Notes is that when you add a note using a Shortcut, the widget doesn’t update. So if you make quick notes without opening them, they just don’t show up in the freaking widget…😬
Wish you were more specific in what you want the shortcut to do. Show how you would do it without the shortcut, then create the shortcut followed how the shortcut works better. Just my thoughts.
Love this, built it myself and Ican run it and select a note, but it won’t show on the Share Sheeteven though i toggledthat button. Still really cool though! Thanks,I
At the very top of the Shortcut, there should be an action called "Receive" that would be automatically added when the "Show in Sharesheet" option is enabled. Please make sure "Rich Text" is selected as an input, If not, tap on whatever qualifier is immediately after the "Receive" and select Rich Text. Hopefully that will fix it. Thanks for watching! Let us know if this solves the issue. Best, JD
Thank you for putting this video on RU-vid. I struggle to grasp shortcuts no matter how many tutorials I watch. Just doesn’t stick at all. However I’m going to watch again and follow along and hope it does stick this time. I’ve tried your suggestion about looking at built in shortcuts but it will not go in. Thanks again.
I have an idea for a video that attempts to answer the questions: what is a shortcut and what are they good for? Please stay tuned it may take a a few days to get this done. Thanks again for watching.
@AppleEDC Find Notes has an issue not just find notes with tags. A workaround is to add a second filter to the Find Notes action and use where all are true. I hope Apple fixes this soon
Thanks! I'll try it out, Earlier IOS builds worked with tags, and I made a few shortcuts that automatically added them to specific types of notes. Made searching a breeze. I really hope this issue gets fixed. If/when it does, I've plan to do a few tags-specific videos. BTW, I reported it to Apple through the developer portal. No response as of yet.
I made one awhile back about keywords that you might like. It's here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8l9cHoWjPtg.htmlsi=nJrxi85i2pwPP9x4 I plan to make one that lets you add keywords using the share menu. Coming soon. Thanks for watching!
Hi, question: what sense does it make do store 'No text was entered' ? I would prefer to ask for a proper title first and then as 2. step for note body to save the created note - but good tips anyhow thanks a lot!
Thanks! Unfortunately, potential security issues prevent me from providing shortcut links. Please Google "Security Vulnerabilities with Apple Shortcuts" for more information, and please be very careful about downloading shortcut links from the internet.
There's one in the Shortcuts App Gallery called "Remember This". I believe it does exactly what you are looking for. Just select Gallery at the bottom of the Shortcuts App and search for Remember This. Thanks for watching!
Really appreciate the video and ideas. It would be helpful if you also gave a link to download the shortcut. I followed steps but have a slightly different outcome and can’t work out why. Downloading a completed shortcut would help me to compare. I’m looking forward to your future shortcut videos too.

I really can’t get my head around shortcuts. I understand one command can action several tasks but thinking of a shortcut for everyday use and how to build it is, I’m afraid, beyond me. Even building a simple shortcut
there is tones of shortcuts and many very useful. Try automatization in the same app. I made and installed one to turn off/on Wifi when you leave your home. Or any Wifi you use daily. All according GPS. This helps to save battery. Any many others. You need time to go thru them all.
This tutorial was valuable like the others. However, I lost track half way in. It cud hv been the circular references u attempted to exhibit. Try a sub mini tutorial from the upper level tutorial topic.
I really appreciate the feedback and I'm working on something along your suggestions. The whole idea of helper shortcuts is a bit challenging. Even keeping track of what each of them does is a headache for me, because I have tons of them. The biggest advantage, it seems, is for things like menus and lists that you may want to use across different shortcuts, because you only need to edit the helper to update the shortcuts that utilize it. Thanks for watching!
Ah! Of course I'd made a slip and did not follow one step of your instructions correctly. Fixed it and it now works perfectly as you intended it to. Many Thanks again!
