A bad premise leads to a bad result. First, the elephant in the room - self defense punches are not for power, they are for precision. Jack Dempsey was a boxer, so he wore padded gloves with hand wrappings. His way of striking, in self defense, would get his hands broken immediately. He's a famous name, but he has zero expertise. Meaningless to insert his opinion here. The generic way to explain hand striking is - it is easier to push a finger into sand than it is to push a palm into sand. Wing Chun seeks to jar the target rather than penetrate it... and that's fine, but don't mistake one type of attack for the other. Wing Chun's strikes do not damage the target, the way a traditional "2 knuckle" punch does. They distract the target to create openings to the throat and eyes, where finger jabs rather than punches are used to actually win the fight. Apples to oranges. Hand position in striking is to create precision. Sink ONE knuckle (that of the pointer finger) into the correct point, using the hand bone behind the knuckle as a spear. That bone aligns perfectly with the strongest part of the wrist and with the primary forearm bone behind it, for maximum stability to sink the strike into the target's vital point. Such strikes do not need to be power punches to drop an opponent. It's a waste of energy to strike that hard, when precision and technique will do the job. The second knuckle (of the middle finger) impacts only by coincidence, and should always hit the target second. It's not a two knuckle strike by design, but by necessity due to anatomy. Strikes to the target's skull are not punches at all, but palm strikes which protect the hand better. Neither one knuckle strikes nor Wing Chun punches are safe (on the hand) to deliver to the head. But let's talk striking safety, too. The main minor injury to the hand that renders it unusable in a fight is the displacement of the middle finger's knuckle. It gets pushed upward toward the pointer finger, is rather painful, and swells quickly. This creates a tender fist that can't deliver strikes well. Wing Chun's punching style creates an impact zone that pushes the middle finger knuckle in exactly the direction you do NOT want it to ever go - it's not a safe striking shape for the hand. The one knuckle method pushes the middle finger knuckle downward toward the ring finger instead - a displacement in this direction comes with almost no pain or swelling, leaving the fist able to strike at full power. I like Wing Chun. It has a lot of great things about it, including its fist strikes. When you just want to jar the target by striking them hard in a soft area, the Wing Chun method of striking is fantastic (aka superior). It's worth learning how to throw these punches. But they are NOT better than a one knuckle strike, cannot replace it, and are not safer to use. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
@Gieszkanne
@Gieszkanne День назад
1:36 watch your own video and you will see how you cheated yourself. When you pointed with the index finger the forearm was aligned with the index and middle finger. When you made the fist you turned it up a lot so that the other bones are aligned! Also the most fractures are the hand bones of the small and ring finger. They are the weakest and not really aligned with the wrist. There some real good videos here on tube about this issue and deep analyses about anatomy.
@MYVLMA
@MYVLMA День назад
@@Gieszkanne no I didn’t cheat, because this is exactly how our anatomy and physiognomy works. If understanding wich muscles are moving the fingers and how they work, you will understand the difference between loose or relaxed structure and tensing structure. The hand is a magical tool and has the most purposes of the body, because no bodypart has more tasks to perform. So from stating pointing finger positions to fist position should be the same, shows that there is no deeper understanding for the work pattern of this body part. Our nervous system doesn’t lie, but I can influence or cheat on everything to prove my point. As I said, challenge me on that with real movements. Not what they said or proved. It’s your body, so find it out for yourself!
@Gieszkanne
@Gieszkanne День назад
@@MYVLMA Why do you think i didnt found out myself. I just wanted to let you know that are more videos out here that go much deeper and came to a different conclusion. Also you can not deny the fact that the ring finger and pinky are much weaker bones and are the most often fractured bones when it comes to broken hand bones.
@MYVLMA
@MYVLMA День назад
@@Gieszkanne I don´t deny any of that. Take an exact look at the video and you will see how the natural powerline looks. Our body knows exactly about the weaknesses of our bodyparts, and this is exactly the reason why our nervoussystem responds according to the informations of our proprioceptives. I have the proof for myself and with all the martial artists and people who never did martial art at all that it works and why. Our body takes care of it´s weaknesses by itself when we follow the right pattern, if we violate any of those patterns or positions, that is how things get damaged. A very simple example is when you trip, and land with your foot in a wrong angle.

A bend in the Wrist, does not matter, if you have developed the proper wrist strength. I learned from 3 different WC lineages. One of them, was a much older version, with a different name. They punched with a vertical fist.. but it was angles 45 degrees outwards. They claimed that it was more natural to the body... and it was more structurally strong. However, I challenged the teacher on this. I walked to the Concrete wall... and Asked, "What would happen, if I wanted to hit the OPs forehead, and he was very Tall?" I then slowly extended my fist to the wall... and showed him that only my pinky fingers knuckle... was touching the wall, at that angle... I said, that IF I impacted like this... I would have easily broken my pinky knuckle. Then I bent my wrist downwards, so that all 3 of my bottom knuckles touched the wall... showing him that in this shape... I was able to hit squarely, without damaging my knuckles. I then walked over to him, and one of his strongest students... Locked my Downwards-Bent wrist.. and Challenged them to TRY to straighten my wrist. Even with Both of their hands, and their full strength.. they could not do it. For reference, the strongest student was also a gym rat.. and he trained his Grip strength to an insane level of power, using progressively stronger and stronger spring based "Grip-Trainers". Now, if you are striking with a vertical fist... you CAN in fact, impact with the top two knuckles. However, if your angles are even a few degrees off, you end up hitting with more power on only ONE of the two knuckles.. (usually the middle knuckle).. and it could do damages to your single knuckle as a result. All of this also depends on the level of your Iron Fist conditioning, too. As well as again... your wrist strength at heavy impact level potentials. In other Chinese arts, they have single knuckle strikes, like the Phoenix knuckle strike. They even have one fist strike, where only the middle knuckle is extended. These types of strikes are for Concentrating the power, into a much smaller area, at impact. They can also dive much deeper into the tissues. That said... these are probably only used on softer tissue areas.. but I also could be wrong... since Ive never trained in them. When I was conditioning my hands / fist (and whole body)... I did try to condition my Phoenix Knuckle... and it was one of the most painful, even when hitting at half the power levels (into the wall mounted sandbag). It was much easier to train Finger Strikes, than the Phoenix knuckle. To be clear, Im not really disputing the fact, that its better to hit with the bottom 3. Im mostly stating, that the Wrist bend, is not really a problem, when its properly strengthened. Also, while some say that you should never hit the forehead, since its the hardest bone in the body... Its actually my favorite target. Its a direct vector line, towards the Brain... and it makes for very easy knockouts, with very little skin/flesh protecting it (absorbing impact forces). Ive Knockout out several fighters, using a vertical fist, to the OPs foreheads... and I never needed to use more than about 15% of the power that I was capable of delivering, to do it. That said, I also conditioned my fist to be like Iron. Most of my sandbag sessions, were anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. I also had a free-hanging bag, filled with like 15 lbs worth of Steel BBs (It was about 7" thick, in the center of the bag).

This may be good concept for law enforcement, though generally they are not supposed to punch. But for regular people.. Self Defense is a legal term - be careful pouncing and hitting people while they are on unarmed their back. Win the engagement, make it home, AND avoid jail time. If this is for sparring with your buddies who are BJJ fighters, this is good for avoiding getting swept after completing a throw from standing - but after that initial escape, it’s best to disengage and force them to stand back up and close the distance while dealing with your strikes. Getting tangled up, you WILL get swept.

@MYVLMA
@MYVLMA 2 дня назад
@@thomasda3482 There are different reasons for that. First is they were well trained and good fighters. Second is, they didn’t win against all fighters, but just against fighters who attended a were allowed to attend in their tournaments. Back then only well trained grappler or wrestling styles had the knowledge of adaptations in a close distance fight. Striking styles usually have no effective understanding for this situation. The only striking style that has this effective understanding of adaptation is Wing Tsun, but it has to be trained like that, which is hard, exhausting and requires a lot of effort. The last reason is, they didn’t dare to fight everyone. There was the challenge in the 90’ between the Gracies and Sifu Emin Boztepe who had the support by other great fighters of the Wing Tsun Leung Ting system like Sifu Salih Avci, Sifu Thomas Mannes and others. But the Gracies never let it happen. I learned from some of these guys and my martial arts background is from different styles including wrestling. So I know how to deal with close distance situations . But still, no one is unbeatable and no one is invincible. We are all human beings and it is ok to lose a fight, because we all make mistakes. I hope, my answer helps you.
