Thanks for the comparison. Wondering if you tried a different flat bed brewer? I have an Oreo v3. Also have you tried the Origami? It works with V60-style papers and similarly low contact you mention for the Kalimantan. On top, the Origami also works with Kapitän-style flat filters. Thus, very versatile…just the design in two pieces is not my favorite but still not a dealbreaker.
I appreciate the review, though is it really necessary to mention the grind time? Seems like something necessary to mention if it's used in a commercial/professional environment.
You’re right! And it’s a great point why the speed of this grinder is just not relevant for the target buyer. But I had to test it out and mention it as it comes up frequently, and some people do care about it even if it’s for home use.
I have upgraded my gaggia with a PID. It's an easy build with XMT7100 device. Temp. Surf isn't mostly consistent for me. I used a meat thermometer before, the fluctuations is too high.
I love the new design, especially the color ones. I will upgrade my basic aeropress after I decorate and decide on my coffee setup. I always love when a recipe is included. Great video overall ☕️
cheap ass grinder with very small burrs, invest in a high quality grinder that will last, be nice to use, and get you better results. look at niche, option-o, etc.

Ufff, tough choice. They’re really different though. With Varia’s conical burrs against the DF54’s flat ones! I gotta say the VS3 is so so pretty and more aesthetically pleasing than the DF54! Buuut the DF54 gets the job done, it’s quiet and it’s got near zero retention… Bonus: it’s also a bit less expensive! (at least in Canada) Would love to know what you decide!
I’m waffling between these two as well. On the one hand, I understand the VS3 is (despite being conical) more of a clarity focused grinder in its flavour profiles. Especially with the Hypernova Ultra burrs. But at a $200CAD premium (with the Hypernovas). And the Varia still has a reputation for reliability issues. If I KNEW aftermarket burrs were coming for the ‘54, it would be a no brainer. The Varia IS prettier… Decisions, decisions.

Honestly, the alignment on this unit was spot on 👌🏼 So, in my experience, there’s no need to mess with it (at least with the unit I received there were no issues whatsoever). Grinds were consistent across the board in each method I tried. No need to season it either. I am so curious to take a look at what you’ve seen though! Thanks for the video, I ran through the process but still had the problem. Yes, I am new to this and left the descaling too long at my 2015 Gaggia was no longer pulling a shot. After completing the process contained within. Wand worked perfectly, as it always had however, head didn't want to pass hot water. I spoke to my mate that gave it to me, he suggested switching the steam button on and off every few seconds to activate the solenoid whilst the solution is in there (for the twenty minutes I borrowed from this video). So I started the process again, this time directing some of the solution through the group head when withdrawing the first 340ml and phasing the steam button on and off every few seconds. Knowing my wand was fine, I then ran off the solution out from the head as well as the wand. I then flushed the 4 times as suggested in the vid, alternating between wand and head. I am pleased to report the machine pulled a lovely shot this morning, pressure certainly noticeably increased on the head and the wand. Whilst this is not what was completely suggested in the video, it helped to clear my blockage and I am hopeful I didn't do my beloved Gaggia any harm. Thanks for the vid, Liz.

Thanks for watching! Actually, in my experience, there’s no need! I merely passed some coffee through as a general measure to eliminate dust and that metallic taste of new burrs 😂
I own the grinder and love it. I have not seasoned it and noticed that it remains consisitent in grind size. I would say no need to season. Also notable is that it has a smaller engine so seasoning may overheat it. The added benefit of the smaller engine and the slower grind time is that the motor does not heat as much which may affect the grinds. I seriously recommend this grinder for anyone.
Kinda! So, with the Phin you don’t get the pressure produced with an Aeropress and it’s never as diluted as with a V60! Also the filter is metallic and lets some sediment through, so it’s more bodied than those two methods. The water drips down by gravity alone and it’s fairly concentrated. Imagine if you were to brew an Aeropress with a 1:5 or 1:6 coffee to water ratio. That’s the best description I can think of! 😅

Absolutely you can and it certainly helps preserve them for longer! The thing is that I entirely forgot about this coffee bag and it was just hidden in a box in the pantry 😂
I was thinking of getting the sandstone kalita wave, but wasn’t sure if I should since I already have a v60. But if the kalita is more forgiving I will definitively buy one! It’s too early in the morning to be fighting with the v60 haha great video btw!
Hahaha I hear you! Leave the V60 for when you’re well awake and rested, or for the funky, weird coffees you wanna play around with. I’ve found the Kalita is a safe option to brew coffee before you’ve had your coffee in the morning 😆
