Just a kid that likes messing around with old things, getting old engines running and saving old gear from the scrap man. Based in Australia, Im willing to look at anything around.
not sure when this tractor was worked on last but i did a almost full tare down and freshen up for a customer on a A414 International. i gyess the wheel bearings had not been checked for a long time. also someone had completly packed it full of grease. so if it had the normal amount it wouldnt be like that i assume
The Millie you have is maybe an ex British Army hybrid, the cab, headlamps above the bumper are civilian and non standard as is the wheels and tyres. I think your Millie is a one off hybrid built by AEC Southall to special order for a customer in Australia, hence the civilian cab with sun visor and lack of slinging flanges on the rear bogie hubs. Prior to the 1970,s very few Millie Mk 1,s found their way to civilian applications, but AEC offered the Millie as a 6x6 off road quarry dumper, . Crane maker Coles also used the Millie for their lorry mounted mobile crane . Douglas Engineering of Cheltenham UK built a limited number of 6x6 timber tractors based on Mk 1 Millie mechanicals, engine gearbox transfer box front axle and winch, only difference is Douglas bought in from John I Thornycroft of Basingstoke Hampshire the rear bogie from their 6x4 'Big Ben' Tractor.
interesting info you have there, one bloke that came out to see it though it might have been bought into australia buy Theise brothers? for the Snowy mountians Hydro Electic dam project in the 50/60. ive not seen another like it in AUS, i have seen the larger military cabins around, but not the short cabin i have
@@hurricanedaniel Thanks much appreciated, and very interesting that AEC tendered for the contract to supply Muftied Millies for the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Dam Project. Do you have any information regarding the Millie,s bodywork or what work she did on the project, a water, fuel tanker ,flatbed lorry?. Only the long wheelbase Troop Supply Transport Millies have the short cab, while the Gun Tractors have the larger cab for the gun crew plus driver.
Looks like it could use injector cleaner! I'm just kidding that old girl probably has excavated the equivalent of the Suez Canal in its lifetime. Theres one at work with a W6 McCormick power pack i can film it if you want some footage.
Great to see videos from you. What is in it for power? Doesn’t sound the healthiest but neither do some of mine. Then again sometimes the audio on these videos doesn’t sound like it does in person.
i think its a Ruston Hornsby 3VRH. it runs on 3 cylinders sometimes and one 1 other times. one cylinder is worn out. other issues are worn injecto pump and the gear drive to the pump is also worn out. it jump gears once before and stopped running and i think its done the same not long after that video i took. the Jaques 15J shovel to the left has a Lister of the same size in it and runs rather well.
@@oldamericaniron5767 its amazing how worn the whole machine is yet it keeps going. though its only run maybe 4 times a year for 2 days at a time. but as you know. alot of old stuff just keeps on going
Thats a very good question. Being a Indian built ruston it might be sort of 'newish' 60s or 70s?. Im not sure if Trevor said if they bought it brand new for there bush block or if it was second hand then?
Yep. Amazing how well some old stuff starts up after sitting for years. I have another item from the same bush block. Sitting for upto 20 years. Will upload this week
Yes, i checked the points and i think i cleaned them up. I normally check basic stuff like that. I had to seal the intake up as the manifold doesnt seem to sute the holes in the head and had a gap at the top
I was at are Lake Goldsmith rally on the weekend. I got some videos of the day but not much. Yet to video the 90ton steam shovel and much of my dragline there
@@oldamericaniron5767 november would be the time as the Lake gold Smith and Scoresby rallys are on the same long weekend and there both the largest we have in Victoria that i know of
@@hurricanedaniel what cities are they in? My wife and I are thinking about planning a trip to Australia next year. If we do we figure minimum of 1 month.
@@oldamericaniron5767 the state of Victoria. Same state im in. Town wise Lake Goldsmith rally is at Lake Gold Smith near Skipton. Scoresby steam fest rally is in Melbourne. If u do come to Victoria i could show u alot of things. Lost of show grounds within a few ours of my place.
Got to thinking, I googled Harman shovel and see it was Australian built. Sad domestic companies as Harman , Chamberlain, Holden and I’m sure there are many others met their demise.
Well im currently in Japan right now. So have had some time to upload videos i have. I have at least 20 atm waiting to be edited slightly and uploaded. So i will do that in the comming weeks
Armstrong Holland were Australian made winches and cable controls International Harvester used them as well some of our TD24s had double drum units used for carry all work
@@andrewjoyce7789 me too actually. Given it was hand crank and not electric starter also. But it happens alot. Amazing how easy some of this old stuff starts up after resting for so long
@@oldamericaniron5767 the asking prices over here are offen far to high. But i was just in the right place at the right time. Also the day after i asked about buying it he backed his caravan into it and the wife then wanted it gone.
@@hurricanedaniel That made me chuckle. When I bought my Insley dragline the man said his wife was tired of it sitting next to their driveway for 16 years. Like you said, right time.
@@oldamericaniron5767 it was odd because when i first asked about it the wife said its probably not for sale, but the bloke said he would think about it. and then the van struck it and i guess she changed her mind. alwasy worth asking the question
It does, reallly tractors along. 690ci long stroke inline 6 diesel helps with that. There was one larger stump we couldnt pull. Will try witj snatch blocks at some point
Glad to see another video! Is this something you found on your 3 month OZ trip. Would, love to see videos of your trip along the way. I had a great time in Australia. I’m not going to say if but when I visit again I want to travel around more. How was the steam pageant, do you have any videos?
Negitive. ive not actually left yet. some customers jobs turned into much larger jobs and some other things have come up. so i will get away in afew weeks i hope
@@hurricanedaniel I’ve repaired enough things in my life so I easily understand how jobs turn into much larger jobs than expected. Hope you get started soon on your adventure and any videos of your endeavors will always be appreciated. Take care and remember, always enjoy life!
@@oldamericaniron5767 I've got a few videos of Lake Goldsmith I could load them up on my RU-vid channel (which has 1 video of my Jeep)? They aren't the best but it may give you an idea of what was there....
@@hurricanedaniel I remember when work had to come first. You have to do what you have to do. Only problem with being retired is the age that comes with it! Was that Allis crawler the one in your video from about 2 years ago?
@@hurricanedaniel yes many years ago, in a scrap yard. We had about 5 over the years as there was a sand pit nearby and they was draglines in the sand pits. Miss them days.
@@robfield5910 very interesting. Seems like people only have old storys of them now day. Did they operate in the scrap yard or they were there to be cut up
@@hurricanedaniel hi Dan, we used them everyday, love the sound of your one. They sound great under load when working. If I could find one I would bring it home 100%
@@robfield5910 ive heard they sound great under load, some day i will have something to load mine up with. hopfully find a shovel front for it again, though alot of items missing from it
Really great to hear from you! I have some big news, Im traveling to Australia at the end of April. I’m going to be in the Sydney area and do some videos with Steve (Steve’s Place Down Under). If I could travel to where ever you are I would love to arrange a visit if possible. Again great to see a video from you!
Lake goldsmith rally is on the 5 and 6ths of may. Its one of the largest rallys down in victoria, at Lake Goldsmith. I will be runing my 19rb dragline.
@@hurricanedaniel Glad to hear from you. I’m going to do what ever I can to get there. I can hardly believe that I accidentally picked a time when that was taking place. Is that the show where there is a steam walking dragline? Does your email still work, also I have what’s app on my phone.
I picked up a Bucyrus 22-B a couple years ago. I truly thought I was going get it to scrap but I got there and bought a battery and figure let me see if the motor will turn. Mechanic said it hadn’t ran in 18 years. Was missing radiator. When I bumped starter I like to cut the one in half with me bc he was standing by the fan blade and that 1 bump cranked it. Never spun over once. I bumped starter and it cranked. I immediately killed it and drove back home and got a radiator off a broke 22-B and went back. Installed radiator, filled w/ antifreeze, greased for hours and sprayed a case of penetrating oil while working levers. It had oil & diesel. Tracked on Low Boy and took home. If could paste a photo here I would!
The good thing about a dragline is no will ever ask to borrow where everyone wants to borrow my Excavator. I say you can borrow if you can operate it and they put their head down!!!
What you have rescued and coaxed to smoky noisy life from the bone yard , is a a late Mark One AEC Militant, short wheelbase civilianised artillery tractor originally designed to tow the 5,5inch medium gun.. The rear bogie ,hubs wheels and tyres are non standard , commercial, lacking the sling flanges on each rear hub as specified by the British Army for quick loading unloading by ship mounted derricks. On another video detailing the chassis and axles, I noticed the wheels are not standard for this model, being plain off centre discs, the Millie would be shod on military pattern' split rims' , easily identifiable by a ring of small studs just inside the rim. This unique feature enabled REME mechanics to quickly change a tyre and tube with the wheel rim still on the hub, important on makeshift, repair and servicing depots close to the front line. Millies engine is AEC,s A220 ,a 150hp 11,3 litre direct injection diesel, based on the 9,6litre A204 of 1938 designed by John Rackham with technical help from Harry Ricardo. Chassis is pure Matador apart from the rear bogie and gearbox, five speed instead of four, a bit of a handful due to its odd driver unfriendly gear gate , reverse ,second ,and fourth gears on the top , first, third and fifth on the bottom. Rear bogie is adapted from the 6x4 Marshall Mammoth, using spiral bevel primary reduction gears , double helical 'herringbone' spur gear secondary reduction with built in differential . The axle casings are the same as a Civilian Mammoth that use a single reduction overhead worm differential designed by David Brown of Meltham Mills Huddersfield. Millies are popular in UK as Timber Tractors, ex army Millies converted for that role by Douglas Engineering of Cheltenham, and make very good breakdown recovery tractors, a number of bus operators including London Tr- ansport used them to tow, recover failed buses and coaches. An old Millie will out perform any modern 6x6 on the rough stuff, and loved by fairground owners for their on site mud plugging ability.
@@user-sc8dh4vn4v Thanks ,AEC is my fav lorry maker, Dennis Brown a local timber haulier has restored a rare Douglas 6x6 Timber Tractor based on Millie mechanicals, rare in having a Thornycroft 'Big Ben' rear bogie regularly shown working with a steam driven mobile saw bench at my local steam rally. To start, drive, and do a bit of tree stump removal is testament to AEC,s seriously quality engineering. That same quality engineering saved Australia from being invaded by Japan in 1941-42, a single AEC 8x8 Colonial Tractor built in 1933 by AEC Hardy Motors kept Darwin in the fight supplying vital military material ,guns ammunition spare parts food ,and fuel. Its three Dyson trailers grossly overloaded and with basic maintenance , AEC,s Colonial Tractor clocked up hundreds of miles on terrain you have second thoughts driving a newish SUV, on 20 less of the Millie,s 150hp. Some trips the gallant AEC ColonialTractor hauled four trailers over axle breaking dirt tracks that would defeat a Toyota Hilux .
@hurricanedaniel got dusted ploughing on a steep incline and the oil bath filters failed to work. Rings broken, not all, ring grooves peened and an impressive ring land in the cylinder wall.
@@andrewjoyce7789 righto. Did a number on her then. Would have defantly been a smoker after that then. The old oil bath filters normally do pritty good
Scraper part looks very similar to the pull scraper I run behind our Komatsu D53P. Believe it's a Heil ex cable scraper, manufactured by Hewco under license back in the 1950s. Nice scrapers to operate considering there age. Nice machine 👍
