Well.. gen 3 is clearly superior in low light conditions.. I tried several photonis tubes (xr5-echo-4g) and none of them perform as good as my thin filmed gen 3 in low lights.. to be comparable you have to use old gen 3 units with specs worse than Omni viii.. everything that is pretty recent is superior to gen 2+/photonis tubes in low lights. Full stop.. that’s my Personal experience. questionable for sure but that’s it..
I feel like filming never does a justice when we all compare tubes. I had a GP Photonis aviation tube and it worked pretty damn good. Even on No moon overcasted nights. It struggled! But I was able to see in the dark. After a year I upgraded to an L3 Omni 8 tube and WOW. Major fucking difference. It sees so much better in low light 10x better than my Photonis tube did and on full moon nights i need to actually turn the gain down further. Photonis still fucks and I havent played with any of their echo or 4g WP tubes, but id imagine theyre still great for the money
Black spots with sharp edges are defects from the manufacturing process. And black spots with soft edges are light damages. It's quite common to have a few smal black spots, especially on commercial grade tubes just like this Photonis echo tube in the video.
@@EagleBayNightSupplies only way to really augment that would be the use of a inert gas like argon thats typically found in wine preservers. nowhere near a commercial purge but helps a wee bit

Just need a Photonis tube in the 2200 fom range at the end of the video to show the whole spectrum of Gen 2+. They start to get a pretty crisp image around that point
Hey just wanted to say I’ve skimmed through most of your videos, really appreciate the amount of details/honesty you give about the light levels/conditions.
watch out for big vendors that are pushing you towards expensive options. The margin on those are huge hence why they're trying to push those. Do your own research guys. Surplus tubes all day.
Got a gen2+ photonis echo pvs-14 from Steele industries. Pretty dang excited. Just got get a j-arm ,counter weight and learn how to tie down pvs-14 . Pretty excited to go out @ night and eventually do night shooting
Do you think Photonis de-gain their Echos for SNR or for cynical market reasons? It doesn't make sense for a highly automated, mass produced product to vary in performance. They should all be turning out similar SNR. If this is true, 4G are really echos with the correct voltage and so higher gain.
@@testboga5991 what would be their commercial strategy if the product performance was so consistent that 95% were at 4G+ performance and there weren't enough rejects for ECHO to exist?
