It was an interesting perspective on character growth 🥰. Also, I feel like very often the whole character arc where there’s a flaw and at some point in the book that flow is fixed, happens so that the character’s growth can fit within the duration of the story. This is why conscious reading as you point out in the video can make a huge difference. It makes us aware that this “realistic character growth” is just a tool to drive the story forward and to keep the readers hooked. It’s not reality but an adapted representation of it. At least that’s how I usually think about this ☺️ thank you for sharing! ❤️

Loved the video, so motivational! I am thinking of writing a non-fiction book at the moment, with all that is happening in the world, it seems that I have something to say. I'm not still graduated, and I recently gained confidence on my neurodivergency, and with that this inspiration came alongside with countless other strong emotions, that I can only cope by writing. I have been journaling every single day since 2019, and I strongly believe that this process has saved me from dark moments many times. Knowing that, I've always felt that other people could possibly relate to what I was struggling with and with my reasoning about things. I'm an avid reader and I study by myself a lot, so I truly think I have something to say (or write), but most times, impostor syndrome comes stronger than the courage to actually post or publish something. Perfectionism is also a heavy problem for me, as it seems that I never get to the point of ''good enough', but consciously knowing of the trait and my tendencies, I've been able to start to overcome it. Again, great video, it got me some courage and motivation to continue writing and believing that we do actually have opinions (or stories) to share that are probably more valueable than most of the content online. One last thing: I agree with you when you said not to care about others opinions, they are worth sh*t most of the times. But here is one argument: realize that some of your own opinions about yourself and your work are also sh*t, because you were conditionned to think and believe that. Unless you make a conscious choice to actually improve your own opinions about yourself and realize and create who you really are, you'll never think you're good enough, even less your art and work.
@NarraTale
@NarraTale 15 дней назад
So happy to hear that you liked the video! And super happy to hear that you're continuing to write :D I agree with you: you absolutely should remember that some of your own opinions are shit. It's a process to overcome, but it's a worthy battle to pursue. I hope you'll share your writing with us when you're finished with it!

I think it gets even harder to understand when the layman has picked up terminology that is used by academics and experts. because most the time the terminology is objectively defined as something incredibly specific for the subject matter experts. But is used by laymen in a broader and more subjective sense, so the misunderstanding gets worse because the same terminology is used by means different things depending on if they are writers or readers.

great video! i think a lot of what you’re saying can directly tie in to the world of songwriting as well. the commercialization of songwriting has really morphed people’s perception of what it means to be a creative individual. everything has gotten so over saturated and burnout is hitting everyone harder than it ever has. going to an art school, it really disappointed me to see the lack of individualism in the people who wanted to actively pursue songwriting as a career. there was no heart, no soul behind what they were writing, they just used the same formulas over and over that they knew would work. everyone’s approach was always quantity over quality. on that note, when i stumbled across an artist who really had a unique sound and sense of self, it was such an inspiring experience amidst the sea of arrogant bedroom pop artists. it’s been a long journey trying to unlearn some of these toxic mindsets, and it’s very reassuring to see other creatives talk about going through a similar experience in their respective field. we should be allowed to be proud of the things we write because it is a representation of our very being! only we could write it!

I also like 20booksto50K FB group, but I've hesitated going to any of the Vegas trips for similar conclusions you came to. I make a living off of writing with many, many books out, and I have not had to go to any conventions. In fact, getting away from conventions helped me more :) I would like to sometimes have a drink with another author sometime, but I can't stand most authors LOL.

If I may, what changed that made it help you more?
@thelatentobserver121

@@NarraTale Staying away from conventions keeps me focused on my own processes... how to harness my creativity through meditation, outlining, dictation, and self-editing. It's different for every writer, so finding what works for you is insanely important. It's good to trade ideas with other writers, but a lot of it is trial and error, so a writer just has to put themselves through it (IMO). Gaining experience (and not going to conventions) is crucial. I've always said... there are two types of writers: the kind who love writing, and the kind who love the IDEA of writing. The latter tend to want to socialize at conventions, post constantly on Facebook (nothing about actual writing) or become the presidents of organizations like SFWA :) I'm the former... I simply love the creative process, and conventions would only distract me. I write to market, so the reward is much higher and keeps me focused. When you write to market, it makes marketing easier and I don't need any gimmicks (I know a few try to sell them). My FB ads naturally run well, and cold releases (working my books into the Amazon algorithm rather than have friends and family buy them) work the best for me. Does any of that make sense? Hah... sorry, I can ramble sometimes.

I actually don't think the writers are mainly at fault when it comes to Hollywood. This is actually great advice. Not just for writing, but life in general. Never trust the advice somebody gives you, when they didn't take enough interest to understand your situation first and address the real underlying issues and to make their advice aplicable to you. Any person who doesn't want to be bothered with your problem is ill positioned to offer anything helpful. It's far too easy for people to throw out truisms and present themselves as authorities without giving a damn about their impact on other peoples' lives. Great video, such an important message! I come from a broken home, I also do not want children, I have also spent a lot of time in the alt scenes with a lot of LGBTQIA+ people. Every time I see a pregnancy storyline in a book, a game or a movie/show, they do it the same way and completely ignores the vast spectrum of people that live on the planet. I instantly don't want to keep watching. It is so reductive even for those who do want kids. So many stories where they even have characters who are outspoken in wanting to adopt for certain reasons, characters who don't like kids, or live a life and have views that makes them say they don't want it, and then they accidentally get pregnant for whatever reason and instantly change their mind and turn into trad wife characters, regardless of what their personalities and values where before. To end my rant, even when you take children out of the equation the steps to a relationship does not have to be the same, a relationship is not less serious or progressed because you didnt get married or whatever. THanks for the great video!

Yeah, it does unfortunately seem like that is kept in the highest regard. And thank you!

I am 25 now and since I was about 22 I found myself not enjoying at all the YA genre. I couldn’t relate to the characters, i thought they were annoying as hell. I prefer a more adult experience tbh, adult problems, adult relationships, mature characters…

I absolutely relate to that!

@@NarraTale like, I don’t even need spicy sex scenes for it to be adult, I just want grown characters with a mature view of the world having an adult conversation. YA makes me feel like I’m dealing with a bunch of bratty children.

@@MariaJoseRangelUwU I disagree with the idea that for a book to be adult it needs to contain spicy scenes, so I agree with you. I also feel like I'm dealing with children when reading YA, which is why I tend to not pick up YA books anymore 😂

The book you're looking for with a character named Four is Divergent, I believe :)

The "this needs more d**k" killed me XD My own thoughts are pretty much in 100% agreement with you. Us millennials are terrified and ashamed of being adults and it is noticeable in the book choices.

Yes, it is definitely noticeable!
