Thanks so much for your very informative video. I've been gardening for many years on the Burin Peninsula. So nice to see a video for local conditions.
A WORD OF CAUTION!!! Please do not touch foxgloves with your bare hands. The heart med digitalis is made from this and it can cause cardiac issues just from touching it!!!!
It is my first year ordering seeds from William Dam. Lots of people are complaining they take too long. On their website they say it will take about 2 months. I was happy my order took much less. Also the germination rate on all my seeds from them far exceeds other local companies.
You may be new to the RU-vid world Stacy, but your doing just fine with your videos. They are always informative and interesting. Unfortunately I had to reseed some of my carrot seeds as they were duds.
Thank you again for tuning in Donna! It's great to get feedback on my videos and know I'm not boring everyone! I also had to reseed a few "bald" spots in my carrot bed which isn't unusual for me. Happy growing! xo
Your Spring garden flowers are very pretty, Daffodils are my favorite flower, and you have so many beautiful varieties. I'm wondering how the seeds that you started outside over the winter (in containers/bottles) are doing?
It might be worth an experiment but I think it’s going to heat up too quickly for them to bloom. However you could start this process in mid July and plant them out in august to get some fall blooms. I haven’t tried that personally but I would like to give it a go.
I would plant them anyways. If it gets too hot in your area they may not bloom before the weather heats up but it’s worth a shot and you may be surprised what you get!
Thank you so much for this very informative and well done video. I bought a few corms a few weeks ago at a local store and unsure how to start them. I need to hurry as we're in 6b and warming up fast!! I'd love if you show them along the growing journey and then this fall how to save the corms for next year. I just found your channel. Thanks for such excellent videos! God Bless!
Thank you for watching Mark! I find violas and pansies can be difficult to germinate but it helps to provide them with darkness until they sprout. It’s been lots of trial and error over the past few years to figure that out. I love repurposing and upcycling in the garden! Cheers 💚
You have a lovely variety of plants, and your Geraniums are looking so healthy and beautiful. You mentioned possibly doing a video on "priming your spinach seeds", I'd be interested in seeing that.
Thanks Donna! Every year it seems I'm honing what works and what doesn't. Very proud of my geraniums indeed!! I'll definitely do a video on priming the spinach seeds, game changer for me!
Yes you can definitely plant them now! The only thing is depending on the variety you may not see blooms until next year. They are totally cold hardy though!
Molly's debut appearance was delightful, such an attentive little assistant. It's quite convenient to have a potting bench, my husband made mine years ago.
Thank you Donna! She’s such a sweet little baby. I’m sure this isn’t the last garden activity she’s a part of! I’m soooo grateful for my potting bench! It’s such a back saver and makes transplanting and seed sowing so much quicker. Even better, it was upcycled from pallets! Thanks for watching Donna ♥️
Not a fan of William Dam seeds. Two months to get a seed order?? William Dam is NOT a fantastic company. They treat their customers like they’re doing them a favour by being their seed provider. Their seeds are curated from other seed producers from all over the globe. Please don’t think for a second that they produce their own seeds, they don’t, and their customer service is ATROCIOUS 👎👎👎
Hey Jennifer! Thanks for taking the time to comment. It’s unfortunate that you’ve had a bad experience with William Dam. I certainly agree that their shipping time takes longer than I would like but I have no bones with the quality of their seeds. That being said I have not had any direct experience with their customer service department. I’m aware that they sell and redistribute seeds from other suppliers, most seed companies work this way. In fact, there are few companies that produce all of their own seed and in that case would be limited to heirlooms/open pollinated varieties. For me, they have competitive pricing on varieties that are difficult to find via Canadian suppliers and are the closest thing to Johnny’s for the Canadian customer (shipping rates to Canada and conversion to CAD is a killer). It’s a bit of a one stop shop for me growing a variety of cut flowers as well as vegetables. Thank you for your input!
I used to like William dam seeds, he doesn’t carry heirloom seeds and I save seeds now so I have to get seeds elsewhere. I’m in zone 2b in Ontario. Can’t wait for this upcoming gardening season
@@cindysquirrelloffgrid9514 If you are looking for a new source for heirloom open pollinated seeds, I HIGHLY recommend Revival Seeds out of Nova Scotia. I think they are the next Baker Creek of Canada. Love their seeds.
Thanks so much for watching! Perhaps I will do a seed collection… it would definitely be a long one 😂 I have enough seeds for at least 3 farms at this point. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment!
I haven’t had any issues with my containers but I do tend to put them in something to keep them upright. I repurposed an old nursery tray for potted plants that each bottle can fit down into. You could also use something like a milk crate to keep your bottles upright. I also try to bury them in the snow to help stabilize.
Hi Stacy, I noticed you are using potting soil and not seed starting soil. I have potting soil but it has fertilizer in it. would that be ok? . Another great video!!!
I tend to use potting soil since seed starting soil is basically just finely screened potting soil. I use big cubes of Promix Mycorrhizae which work great for all my seed starts and transplants plus it's economical. You may want to be cautious using soil with fertilizer added because it may burn your seedlings but I haven't tried it myself so I can't speak from personal experience. Thanks for watching! :)
Hi there! I've never grown geraniums before but they are gorgeous for containers, I just might. Good to know that they take a while! I'm in Alaska, zone 4b, and we have such a short growing season, I always have to keep that in mind and how much I am able to let them grow indoors or in the hoop house first
Thank you so much for watching. We have a short growing season here as well so I'm likely not far off your growing conditions. Definitely give them a try :)
Loved the video. I am hoping you are going to have a video when you are going to start them.I am planning on trying some annuals as well.I always seeded perennials .looking forward to this video 😊
Thank you so much for watching Deborah! I will certainly be documenting my seed starting as it's such a huge part of gardening for me every year. It's so rewarding to grow your own annuals :)
Great information on Canadian seed companies. I have been a fan of Veseys for a couple of decades. Have ordered from Revival, West Coast, McKenzie, Moonglow Gardens, Northern seeds, Heirloom, Atlantic pepper and T&T seeds. I agree with you 100% about shipping costs as well as supporting Canadian seed companies. I was disappointed that Stokes seeds now has a minimum order that is way outside in price for a small home gardener. They had some terrific flower varieties. I will look at the Seed company online. Glad to have found your channel.
Thank you for watching Mark! I've never heard of Moonglow and Northern Seeds, I'll definitely have to look them up. Nevertheless, there are SO many amazing Canadian companies to order from and I have surely only scratched the surface. I also noticed that Stokes has a really high order minimum and I'm very disappointed because I had planned on making an order this year. I guess it wasn't as profitable to keep selling to the home gardener?
@@growinginthecove I spoke with a representative from Stokes. The family run business was bought by a large company that has a different business model, geared towards commercial growers.
Hello Deborah! Thank you so much for watching ❤ the seeds used in this video were mostly from Revival Seeds in Nova Scotia (highly recommend this small family owned business!) and William Dam Seeds in Ontario. I make online orders every year. However I buy seeds from many companies and have had great success with local seeds from Gaze Seed in St. John’s, as well as McKenzie and Burpee seeds you can find in Walmart and hardware stores.
Hi Stacy, I've been wondering when you usually start your winter sowing....thanks for the video! I will try it (first time), I just need to collect some containers, lol. Is there a cutoff time where it would be too late to winter sow???
Hi Donna! Thanks again for watching! If I recall correctly, I did this a few years ago near the end of February with success. I would think you have at least this month and possibly even into the first week of March will still give you lots of “chill” hours. Good luck with it ❤
You can keep sowing through April...just do the perennials that need cold stratification and cool season annuals now, and your warmer season annuals later in March and April.
@@martystevens2313 I haven't had much luck with winter sowing warm season annuals in our climate since we have frosts right up into the end of June but I know many people in other climates have success with it. I have to start my warm season annuals inside or in my greenhouse.
@@growinginthecove I've had lots of frosts through april, my last frost date is mid may. I dont even cover mine with a blanket when they predict colder temps. Wouldnt hurt to test out a few zinnia, tomatoes, ect. and see how they do.
Hi Stacy, congratulations on your first RU-vid video! I also find it interesting to see what other gardeners like to grow, so a seed haul is a great way to start things off. I'm really looking forward to seeing your future videos.
Hello Mam ,Your RU-vid Video quality and topic is very nice. I don't know why you stopped uploading videos to your channel.
