Thanks Robert! Much appreciated. Some updates coming soon. With the summer weather I’ve been flying rc planes lately. Nice weather is so short here in the north east.
If you are making your control panel underneath your layout, think about every time you add something, you have to crawl underneath your table. Think about putting your control panel facing the outside of the layout and covered with some type of door much easier to do the wiring from the outside than crawling underneath the layout.
This should be a basic engine in every layout/collection. The body, including the end steps, is all one piece. I have the custom run Amtrak 1100 and would really like to pick up a Pennsylvania or a Lackawanna the next time around. Love the layout and the way you observe prototypical scale speeds ... and not running its train at 50mph.
Very nice. You have a big basement. Mine is 1600+ square feet, but, unfortunately, has been subdivided, so I couldn't build the way that I really wanted to. I settled for a 24x18 L, seven foot four inches wide at the long end and nine foot at the short end. I like the way that you use that foam ballast, it looks like a solid product. I'm using tubular, so I have to go a slightly different way. Keep these updates coming, it should be interesting. An excellent video, for sure.
Really like the notched framework idea, along wit the cross-framing, that probably helps avoid any wobbling as well. Thanks for the tip about the HF saw and roadbed. Not a train question but your floor looks gorgeous. Is that tile or really clean, new concrete?
That’s a big debate for this layout. In the past i used Dennis Brennan’s better ballast. It’s good stuff, but it has a light green tinge mixed in that i didn’t care for. It didn’t represent the color ballast i see in my area very well. What i think I’m going to do is use a local rock quarry and buy some like i did for the tunnels you see in some of my videos. I’ll use Brennan’s black ballast for the yard area. Ground cover is another question for me since Brennans stopped selling some of the items they had in the past. I’ll have to look around for that.
I agree with you on the roadbed. It’s funny I’ve actually been using that foam stuff for about 10 years now and it has been excellent for sound deadening. I know the guy that sells it as well and he’s really great to work with. The layout is looking great. I’m looking forward to seeing it progress over the years
Awesome looking benchwork so far. I really like the overall size is perfect and the possibilities are endless. I will be watching if you do more video's. Thanks for sharing!
Great video update Marc! Your dad was telling me a little about this last time I saw him. I recently redid my layout with new benchwork and ross/gargraves, I couldn't be happier!
H Marc, could you include a few photos of the track plan that you have in mind? So far its all looking good but I'd like to visualise what is in store for the layout. Pete from Sydney, Australia
This is going to be a fabulous lay out. I would like to ask you to consider one thing as you progress along that almost every RU-vid, and layout creator dismisses. There are a couple of us that are really interested in how the transformer lay out panel is equipped. We don’t think about it, but we spend a lot of time looking at our transformers And our switch controllers and all of the things that it takes to make the layout great. If you go to any RU-vid video, you may never see how the layout is powered whether you use new equipment or old equipment or a combination, layout panels, how they are laid out, where they are laid out, is actually pretty interesting. It may not be a focus of one of your videos, but I would like to see you include it for those few of us that are interested. Thanks, and keep up the great work.
Nice start Marc. Sometimes simple is better, it just depends what you want. This link will take you to a drop gate that may be of interest to you. There is another video in the same group that has a video of a counter balance bridge. Looking forward to your next video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1haGViPuXBo.html
Thanks Phil, I'm actually a big proponent of smaller sized layouts. I feel they are not so overwhelming when folks come to see it. They can really focus on the work and detail and not the size. I just got a bit carried away. :)
Awesome 👍 your layout is huge I just rebuilt mine it's 26'x16 ' ,i agree with u on age and also your bench looks well built layout will look really cool when completed yes would love to see you filming progress ,I just subscribed to your channel looking forward to future videos 👍 Thanks for sharing,,, Eddie @elwtrains
