Hi Lucia, thanks for sharing your experience and relevant info. Any idea who covers the cost of recommended emergency courses (I.e REST, ALS, obs etc) for those who are considering rural-remote GP?
Basic principles of accomodation in Sydney are *1. Proximity to public transport.* Train, metro, tram, bus or ferry or bikeways. Unlike UK, public transport is cheap. Sydney's public transport covers a vast area, 125km west, 200 km south west, 160km south, 200km west and 200km north. The maximum fare on the Opal Card which covers this is A$11.20 with a maximum daily fare of A$16.80 M-F, A$8.40 Sat & Sun. With a weekly max of A$50. Off peak travel has a 30% discount. Basically you can say that A$50/£26.40/US$32 will cover your transport costs for the week. *2. Time to travel.* People commute from places like Wollongong to the south, The Southern Highlands to the South West ,the Blue Mountains to the West, Central Coast to the North with express train times of up to an hour and a half, usually in comfortable seats and able to do work on journey. The attractive Northern Beaches have an express double decker bus service that takes about an hour to Central Sydney. The dozens of ferry services around the harbour all link up with waiting bus services. the Manly ferry as an example takes less than half an hour with spectacular views en route. The longest ferry, The River Cat goes to Parramatta about an hour west. *3. A 1 hour commute* is roughly bounded by Avalon Beach in the North, Sutherland/Cronulla Beach in the South, Campbelltown to the South West and Blacktown/Richmond to the West *4. Parking* Is really expensive and difficult. Traffic can be horrendous, which is why there is such an emphasis on public transport. *5. Noise is a problem.* Especially in inner and surrounding central Sydney because of traffic and over flights to Sydney Airport on Botany Bay just to the south. Expect to stop conversations every time a jet goes overhead. *6. Lifestyle* Good eating, coffee and entertainment are mostly concentrated to the East around the CBD but Sydney has satellite high rise centres at Chatswood, Parramatta, Hurstville, Bankstown and Liverpool which have their own dining and entertainment. Be mindful that in remote suburbs you will still be able to get good restaurants and cafés but the KFCs and Macdonalds generally take over. *7. High rise apartments* Are increasingly taking over anywhere near good transport. many come with good facilities in house, like pools, gyms and SOHO/socialising facilities on dedicated floors or in common garden areas. *8.. Climate.* Close to the water, and there is a lot of that in the east, is more temperate. The Blue Mountains get extremely cold in winter with some occasional snow. Western Sydney can get extremely hot in summer, up to 45°C
hey Lucia :) I still remeber watching your early videos of settling in, finding apartments and such :) .. and fast-faroward we are here.. Hope Ozzy has been treating you well and you are thriving there :) .... cheers much x) !
Can you do an update on working as a GP in Australia please? Very interested in the working conditions and hours, pay etc and how things have changed since your last video from 3y ago
You clearly move to Aussie because uk salary for doctors sucks and for uk-doctors are easy to move to australia and earn good money there . Uk doctors are exempted for AMC Exams. That’s why lot of uk doctors are leaving uk and moving to Aussie.😂
Brilliant video, thank you. What are some of the jobs that can allow GPs to reduce the length of moratorium? I find your videos very helpful in providing a real world example of what UK GPs can expect in Australia. Please continue to upload videos about your experience as a GP, because their are a lot of us looking to make the move. Good luck!
I hope you would be able to smoothly go through Academic role to enjoy DPA exemption. I would like to hear about your epxerience of it ( how to apply for it and what qualifications we need to have to do that academic role, and pors & cons of it) a few months or a year down the line if it is okay with you since that is what I want to do when I move from the UK to Aussie.
It used to be that the inner east and west were exciting and fun and the north shore is more conservative and boring but since Covid so many venues have closed it barely makes any difference.
Having lived in Sydney all my life Darlinghurst used to be associated with Kings Cross the red light district 10-20 years ago and to me still seems similar but as you said it’s more refined nowadays and will probably lose the association with the Cross soon. The North Shore I wouldn’t necessarily say is more Upper class. The Eastern Suburbs has the most expensive real estate in Australia. If anything the North Shore is definitely more conservative and not exciting as the Eastern Suburbs
What do you mean by North Shore please? We live on the Upper North Shore, which is some distance away from the Harbour but has peaceful suburbs. It is more conservative than the Eastern Suburbs and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'd call somewhere like Cremorne or Mosman northern harbourside suburbs rather than North Shore. The North Shore proper starts at Roseville.
Hi Lucia it's long time you didn't do any video. I hope you are ok? I am GP from UK and wanna move from UK you think Australia is better than Canada and New Zealand as financially and work life balance.?
Hiya 😊 Fellow GP here, considering the move to Australia (near Sydney) V. S Canada (Near Toronto) Can I get your thoughts on that one? What made you go for Oz even though it is further away? Was it the weather? I gather the pay is almost similar Thanks 😊

Do you still live in Australia or have returned to UK for the following reasons. Heat (45* C) , Slow internet speed, spiders on the wall, reptiles in your backyard. Because a lot of Australians have left Australia for USA or Canada or UK.
It's pretty rare for the temperature in Sydney to reach 45, indeed to exceed 40. The maximum ever was just over 45. Summer days do get into the 30s, but that's pretty easy to cope with. I have no idea what the internet speed is, but it's fast enough for me. There may well be spiders on the wall, but the chance that the spider will be venomous, let alone dangerously so, is pretty low. We live on the Upper North Shore, the home of the Sydney funnel-web spider. The bite from that is potentially fatal, but there is an effective anti-venene*, My memory is that there have been no fatalities, even amongst children, since that was developed. Not many before then. The only reptiles we've seen here are blue-tongue lizards (which like eating the funnel-webs but are harmless to humans) and a range of skinks. *We usually catch 1 or 2 a summer. Once caught, we take them straight to the casualty section of a near-by hospital. They're collected from there and taken to a centre where they're milked of their venom, which is turned into the anti-venene.
How long do you have to wait once arrived in Australia and then able to start working..just wondering how many weeks without income once arrived..thank you..loving ur aussie GP series!
Hi Doctors, I studied MBBS and graduated in 2017 from China. after that I did not go back to my country and work in any hospital due to financial problems. now in 2022, I am thinking to pass AMC(Australian medical council exam) and move to Australia to work as a doctor. I want to ask after passing AMC 1 + English exam, will I be able to secure a job ? or they dont accept doctor with 5 years gap. any advice how to overcome this problem and get a job in Australia after passing AMC? THANKS.
Hey I'm recently finished my last year in China and will started internship this year. Did you clear AMC ? Can I know how it turned out because I'm planning to write AMC after my graduation.
Yes you will. We’re looking for good doctors who pay attention to detail with English and listening skills. Also be open to prescribing drugs of dependence with good reason and be able to justify your position. As the doctors who don’t are useless.
