My name is Dr Lucia
I’m a General practitioner from UK that has decided to start working in Australia to see if the grass is really greener on the other side.
This is me showing you my journey in hope that it will help you along yours.

Hi Dr Lucia! Thanks for making this video! I'm going through the registration process of Aus GP and hopefully coming over in 2021. wish to know if you left the UK after you obtained your GP fellowship? How was job hunting like? all the best and stay safe in the pandemic! x

Hello! Thanks for your wishes, hope you are keeping safe too. I completed all of my training in the UK and used a job agency to find a job. 👍🏼

Hi Lucia, thanks for sharing your experience and relevant info. Any idea who covers the cost of recommended emergency courses (I.e REST, ALS, obs etc) for those who are considering rural-remote GP?

There are some not for profit places that help people by paying for their medications etc. It's just about finding out where they are. I couldn't afford mine (I have a lot) once, and I was surprised about this service when my GP referred me to these people. This was in Melbourne. But I'm sure there would be similar in Sydney.

Hiya 😊 Fellow GP here, considering the move to Australia (near Sydney) V. S Canada (Near Toronto) Can I get your thoughts on that one? What made you go for Oz even though it is further away? Was it the weather? I gather the pay is almost similar Thanks 😊

Sounds like you are working as a salaried doctor in a corporate-owned medical centre. There are still the old-style stand-alone practices with just the GPs and a receptionist but you'd have to buy in as a partner just as you would in the UK. If you're living in the CBD and commuting 45 minutes on the train I'm guessing that your practice is in the western or southwestern suburbs.

Why can't you access NICE CKS? Does the website not allow you access from Australia??? Cheers

When you go onto the CKS part it says “CKS is only available in the UK The NICE Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) site is only available to users in the UK, Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories.” I’ve even emailed them and they said that there’s no way around it.. BUT you can access the general NICE guidelines

Is it true that foreign doctors including MRCGP cannot work in city area for 10yrs or so ? . Thanks for your videos. Really helpful

It is unfortunately..apparently to skip the 10 year moratorium you would have needed a Permanent residency (I think) / citizenship prior to starting medschool

You can however work In the city but not for more than 6 months per practice within those 10 years

Hi. Are you guaranteed that $100/hour, irrespective of the number of patients you get to see? Please could you clarify more on the pay system for doctors over there. Thanks.

Hi! So each GP practice will vary...I was guaranteed this rate for the first 6 months only. The pay system: - when you finish seeing a patient you end the consult and select which billing code you need - this gets stored & administration staff send the billing codes to Medicare - you then get paid weekly - usually for the shifts done between Thursday - Wednesday each week. Hope that helps!

No because my medical and general practice degrees are recognised equivalent in Australia
